Fully automated 3D segmentation of periapical lesions on CBCT images using nnU-Net v2.

AIM: to evaluate the performance of an nnU-Net v2–based architecture for the voxel-level detection, lesion-wise detection and 3D segmentation of periapical lesions on CBCT images. METHODOLOGY: In this retrospective study, 150 CBCT scans acquired for various clinical indications were initially evaluated. 10 scans met the exclusion criteria, leaving 140 CBCT scans that were annotated for the presence of periapical lesions. Periapical lesions were manually segmented on a web-based platform by a trained researcher and verified by an experienced endodontist to obtain the ground-truth segmentations.

Lung Nodule Malignancy Classification On 3D CT Images Using a Cosine Similarity-Enhanced Graph Attention Network.

Lung cancer remains a major contributor to global cancer-related deaths, largely due to diagnoses occurring at advanced stages. Accurately distinguishing between benign and malignant pulmonary nodules plays a pivotal role in facilitating early detection and timely intervention. To address the limitations of traditional methods that consider only individual CT slices and suffer from high false-positive rates, this work proposes an end-to-end patient-level classification framework for pulmonary nodule malignancy based on a Cosine Similarity-Enhanced Graph Attention Network (CSEGAT). The proposed

CT angiography after 20 years: a transformation in cardiovascular disease characterization continues to advance.

Through a marriage of spiral computed tomography (CT) and graphical volumetric image processing, CT angiography was born 20 years ago. Fueled by a series of technical innovations in CT and image processing, over the next 5-15 years, CT angiography toppled conventional angiography, the undisputed diagnostic reference standard for vascular disease for the prior 70 years, as the preferred modality for the diagnosis and characterization of most cardiovascular abnormalities. This review recounts the evolution of CT angiography from its development and early challenges to a maturing modality that ha

Snake model-based lymphoma segmentation for sequential CT images.

The measurement of the size of lesions in follow-up CT examinations of cancer patients is important to evaluate the success of treatment. This paper presents an automatic algorithm for identifying and segmenting lymph nodes in CT images across longitudinal time points. Firstly, a two-step image registration method is proposed to locate the lymph nodes including coarse registration based on body region detection and fine registration based on a double-template matching algorithm. Then, to make the initial segmentation approximate the boundaries of lymph nodes, the initial image registration res

Comparison of a New Integral-Based Half-Band Method for CT Measurement of Peripheral Airways in COPD With a Conventional Full-Width Half-Maximum Method Using Both Phantom and Clinical CT Images.

OBJECTIVES: To compare a new integral-based half-band method (IBHB) and a conventional full-width half-maximum (FWHM) method in measuring peripheral airway dimensions at airway phantoms and thin-section computed tomography of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). METHODS: The IBHB was validated and compared using airway phantoms and 50 patients with COPD. Airway parameters (wall area percentage [WA%], mean lumen radius, and mean wall thickness) were measured at fourth to sixth generations of the right apical bronchus. Matched results from 2 methods were compared and correlated with fo

Automatic segmentation of pulmonary fissures in computed tomography images using 3D surface features.

Pulmonary interlobar fissures are important anatomic structures in human lungs and are useful in locating and classifying lung abnormalities. Automatic segmentation of fissures is a difficult task because of their low contrast and large variability. We developed a fully automatic training-free approach for fissure segmentation based on the local bending degree (LBD) and the maximum bending index (MBI). The LBD is determined by the angle between the eigenvectors of two Hessian matrices for a pair of adjacent voxels. It is used to construct a constraint to extract the candidate surfaces in three

Automatic detection and segmentation of axillary lymph nodes.

Lymph node detection and measurement is a difficult and important part of cancer treatment. In this paper we present a robust and effective learning-based method for the automatic detection of solid lymph nodes from Computed Tomography data. The contributions of the paper are the following. First, it presents a learning based approach to lymph node detection based on Marginal Space Learning. Second, it presents an efficient MRF-based segmentation method for solid lymph nodes. Third, it presents two new sets of features, one set self-aligning to the local gradients and another set based on the

Low-dose spine CT: optimisation and clinical implementation.

Spinal deformities affect young individuals predominantly girls who are usually subjected to regular and intensive radiological investigation especially before and after corrective surgery. Optimisation of spine computed tomography (CT) and the implementation of the low-dose CT in the work-up of spinal deformities were presented. The presented low-dose CT here means providing the operating surgeons with essential information about 15 vertebral bodies (almost 36-cm long region of the vertebral column). The mean effective dose of the low-dose CT was 0.37 mSv without any negative impact on image

Visual servoing for intraoperative positioning and repositioning of mobile C-arms.

The problem of positioning mobile C-arms, e.g. for down the beam techniques, as well as repositioning during surgical procedures currently requires time, skill and additional radiation. This paper uses a Camera-Augmented Mobile C-arm (CAMC) to speed up the procedure, simplify its execution and reduce the necessary radiation. For positioning the C-arm in down-the-beam position, the pre-operative diagnostic CT is used for defining the axis. Additional CT visible markers on patient's skin allow the CAMC's optical camera to compute the C-arm's pose and its required displacement for positioning. In

A hybrid method for airway segmentation and automated measurement of bronchial wall thickness on CT.

Inflammatory and infectious lung diseases commonly involve bronchial airway structures and morphology, and these abnormalities are often analyzed non-invasively through high resolution computed tomography (CT) scans. Assessing airway wall surfaces and the lumen are of great importance for diagnosing pulmonary diseases. However, obtaining high accuracy from a complete 3-D airway tree structure can be quite challenging. The airway tree structure has spiculated shapes with multiple branches and bifurcation points as opposed to solid single organ or tumor segmentation tasks in other applications,

Automated model-based rib cage segmentation and labeling in CT images.

We present a new model-based approach for an automated labeling and segmentation of the rib cage in chest CT scans. A mean rib cage model including a complete vertebral column is created out of 29 data sets. We developed a ray search based procedure for rib cage detection and initial model pose. After positioning the model, it was adapted to 18 unseen CT data. In 16 out of 18 data sets, detection, labeling, and segmentation succeeded with a mean segmentation error of less than 1.3 mm between true and detected object surface. In one case the rib cage detection failed, in another case the automa

Left ventricle segmentation using diffusion wavelets and boosting.

We propose a method for the segmentation of medical images based on a novel parameterization of prior shape knowledge and a search scheme based on classifying local appearance. The method uses diffusion wavelets to capture arbitrary and continuous interdependencies in the training data and uses them for an efficient shape model. The lack of classic visual consistency in complex medical imaging data, is tackled by a manifold learning approach handling optimal high-dimensional local features by Gentle Boosting. Appearance saliency is encoded in the model and segmentation is performed through the

Three-dimensional morphological analysis of intracranial aneurysms: a fully automated method for aneurysm sac isolation and quantification.

PURPOSE: Morphological descriptors are practical and essential biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment selection for intracranial aneurysm management according to the current guidelines in use. Nevertheless, relatively little work has been dedicated to improve the three-dimensional quantification of aneurysmal morphology, to automate the analysis, and hence to reduce the inherent intra and interobserver variability of manual analysis. In this paper we propose a methodology for the automated isolation and morphological quantification of saccular intracranial aneurysms based on a 3D representatio

Extracranial versus intracranial references in individual cephalometric analysis.

This study was undertaken to determine whether angles SNA and ANB genuinely represent both the degree of maxillary prognathism and the intermaxillary relationship in natural head position (NHP). Pearson's r correlation coefficients were used to assess the associations between these angles, and variables based on NHP and extracranial reference lines. A large sample (n = 106) was used, comprising subjects with a variety of facial patterns. This was also divided into subgroups comprising subjects with similar facial configurations, determined by natural head position parameters. For the subgroups

Feasibility of non-coplanar tomotherapy for lung cancer stereotactic body radiation therapy.

To quantify the dosimetric gains from non-coplanar helical tomotherapy (HT) arcs for stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) of lung cancer, we created oblique helical arcs by rotating patient's CT images. Ten, 20 and 30 degrees of yaws were introduced in the treatment planning for a patient with a hypothetical lung tumor at the upper, middle and lower portion of the right lung, and the upper and middle left lung. The planning target volume (PTV) was 43 cm(3). 60 Gy was prescribed to the PTV. Dose to organs at risk (OARs), which included the lungs, heart, spinal cord and chest wall, was opt

An on-line replanning method for head and neck adaptive radiotherapy.

Daily setup for head and neck (HN) radiotherapy (RT) can vary randomly due to neck rotation and anatomy change. These differences cannot be totally corrected by the current practice of image guided RT with translational repositioning. The authors present a novel rapid correction scheme that can be used on-line to correct both interfractional setup variation and anatomy change for HN RT. The scheme consists of two major steps: (1) Segment aperture morphing (SAM) and (2) segment weight optimization (SWO). SAM is accomplished by applying the spatial relationship between the apertures and the cont

Refining the Classroom: The Self-Supervised Professor Model for Improved Segmentation of Locally Advanced Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths, with accurate staging being critical for treatment planning. Automated 3D segmentation models can aid in staging, but segmenting PDAC, especially in cases of locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC), is challenging due to the tumor's heterogeneous appearance, irregular shapes, and extensive infiltration. This study developed and evaluated a tripartite self-supervised learning architecture for improved 3D segmentation of LAPC, addressing the challenges of heterogeneous appearance, irregular shapes, and extensi

Development of a modified 3D region proposal network for lung nodule detection in computed tomography scans: a secondary analysis of lung nodule datasets.

BACKGROUND: Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) has been shown useful in early lung cancer detection. This study aimed to develop a novel deep learning model for detecting pulmonary nodules on chest LDCT images. METHODS: In this secondary analysis, three lung nodule datasets, including Lung Nodule Analysis 2016 (LUNA16), Lung Nodule Received Operation (LNOP), and Lung Nodule in Health Examination (LNHE), were used to train and test deep learning models. The 3D region proposal network (RPN) was modified via a series of pruning experiments for better predictive performance. The performance of e
