UNLABELLED: Presbyopia is the most common refractive disorder for people older than 40 years. It is characterized by a gradual and progressive decrease in accommodative amplitude. Many surgical procedures for the correction of presbyopia exist, with additional procedures on the horizon. This review describes the prevalent theories of presbyopia and discusses the available surgical options for correction.

Emmetropic presbyopes are not used to wearing bifocal or progressive-power lenses all the time. Reading spectacles have the disadvantage that they have to be removed when the wearer wishes to look into the distance. Therefore, these people are turning increasingly to pulpit spectacles, which correct their vision for reading while leaving the long-range vision to which they are accustomed unchanged. However, conventional pulpit spectacles do not enable emmetropic presbyopes to see clearly at intermediate distances. This article deals with a type of pulpit spectacles which have been specially de

PURPOSE: Previous ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) studies showed that accommodative optical response (AOR) can be predicted from accommodative biometric changes in a young and a pre-presbyopic population from linear relationships between accommodative optical and biometric changes, with a standard deviation of less than 0.55D. Here, paraxial schematic eyes (SE) were constructed from measured accommodative ocular biometry parameters to see if predictions are improved.
METHODS: Measured ocular biometry (OCT, A-scan, and UBM) parameters from 24 young and 24 pre-presbyopic subjects were used to co

The application of aberrometry in the field of refractive surgery has led to the availability of several methods of measuring ocular aberrations in a clinical setting. A case series from four patients diagnosed with corneal thinning disorders is described in this paper (keratectasia following refractive surgery, pellucid marginal degeneration, forme fruste keratoconus or keratoconus). These cases demonstrate how aberrometry can be used to help in the differential diagnosis of patients with corneal thinning disorders, although the standard polynomial fitting for aberrometry data may fail in som

INTRODUCTION: Children with disabilities (other than visual impairment) are at a higher risk of visual impairment as compared to normal population. Majority of the ocular disorders, like refractive errors and strabismus, are easily treatable. As these children depend on their visual inputs for social and academic activities, an early detection and prompt treatment of even a minor visual problem is of utmost importance for them.
AIM: To assess the visual function and ocular status of children with disabilities other than visual impairment and to identify the preventable and treatable causes of

The spatially resolved wavefront aberrations of four types of ophthalmic lens are measured with a custom-built apparatus based on a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor and specially designed positioning stage. The wavefront aberrations of the progressive addition lenses (PALs) are compared. The results show that the distribution depends much on the design philosophy, although the average values of root mean square in the entire measurement areas have no significant difference. It is feasible to evaluate the optical performance through the wavefront analysis of PALs, but how to meet the customized

SIGNIFICANCE: The performance of the Eye Refract (Luneau Technology, Chartres, France), a new instrument to perform aberrometry-based automated subjective refraction, has been previously evaluated in healthy subjects. However, its clinical implications in other ocular conditions are still unknown.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the agreement between the Eye Refract and the traditional subjective refraction, as the criterion standard, in keratoconus patients with and without intracorneal ring segments (ICRSs).
METHODS: A total of 50 eyes of 50 keratoconus patients were eva

PURPOSE: Pterygium is a chronic, degenerative condition of unknown cause, and its development can lead to significant refractive errors due to localized flattening of the cornea near the central area of the leading edge. However, to date, the impact of pterygium and its surgical removal on refractive errors has not been thoroughly compiled in a comprehensive study. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effect of pterygium surgery on refractive errors and to examine the relationship between the size of the pterygium and its effect on refractive errors both before and after pterygium surge

PURPOSE: To create a simplified model of the eye by which we can specify a key optical characteristic of the crystalline lens, namely its power.
METHODS: Cycloplegic refraction and axial length were obtained in 60 eyes of 30 healthy subjects at eccentricities spanning 40° nasal to 40° temporal and were fitted with a three-dimensional parabolic model. Keratometric values and geometric distances to the cornea, lens and retina from 45 eyes supplied a numerical ray tracing model. Posterior lens curvature (PLC) was found by optimising the refractive data using a fixed lens equivalent refractive in

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated differences in peripheral image quality with refractive error. Peripheral blur orientation is determined by the interaction of optical aberrations (such as oblique astigmatism) and retinal shape. By providing the eye with an optical signal for determining the sign of defocus, peripheral blur anisotropy may play a role in mechanisms of accommodation, emmetropisation and optical myopia control interventions. This study investigated peripheral through-focus optical anisotropy and image quality and how it varies with the eye's refractive error.

Undesirable living environment may impose risk on myopia development. Furthermore, peripheral refractive error was suggested to contribute to juvenile eye growth modulation. This study aimed to investigate the interaction between peripheral refractive error and living environment in relation to central refractive status in Hong Kong schoolchildren. Central and peripheral refractive errors, axial length (AL), and corneal radius of curvature (CR) were measured in 573 schoolchildren (age 9.5 ± 0.9 years). The AL/CR ratio was used to represent the central refractive status, accounting for non-cycl

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to reveal the factors influencing the selection of the dominant eye in refractive surgery patients, and enhance the accuracy of clinical evaluation and surgical treatment.
METHODS: A retrospective study method was employed. The ocular biometric parameters were analyzed in 4,114 patients who underwent refractive surgery at the affiliated hospital of Southwest Medical University from 2019 to 2023.
RESULTS: The study found that 79.07% of the patients had the right eye as the dominant eye, while 20.93% had the left eye. Although there was no significant difference betw

SIGNIFICANCE: Identifying children at highest risk for rapid myopia progression and/or rapid axial elongation could help prioritize who should receive clinical treatment or be enrolled in randomized clinical trials. Our models suggest that these goals are difficult to accomplish.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop models predicting future refractive error and axial length using children's baseline data and history of myopia progression and axial elongation.
METHODS: Models predicting refractive error and axial length were created using randomly assigned training and test data sets from 916
