Ankle Sprain Has Higher Occurrence During the Latter Parts of Matches: Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis.

Context: Ankle sprains are common injuries in sports, but it is unclear whether they are more likely to occur in a specific period of a sporting game. Objective: To systematically review the literature investigating when in a match ankle sprains most likely occurred. Evidence Acquisition: The databases CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and SPORTDiscus were searched up to August 2016, with no restriction of date or language. The search targeted studies that presented data on the time of occurrence of ankle sprains during sports matches. Data from included studies were analyzed as a percentage of ankle s

Endoscopic resection of symptomatic os calcaneus secundarius.

Os calcaneus secundarius is an accessory ossicle resulting from a secondary ossification center of the anterior facet of the calcaneus. It may cause chronic pain and limitation in inversion motion after inversion ankle sprain. Excision of the ossicle is indicated if the symptoms do not resolve with conservative treatment. A case of symptomatic os calcaneus secundarius, which was successfully resected endoscopically, is presented.

WITHDRAWN: Different functional treatment strategies for acute lateral ankle ligament injuries in adults.

BACKGROUND: Acute lateral ankle ligament ruptures are common problems in present health care. Early mobilisation and functional treatment are advocated as a preferable treatment strategy. However, functional treatment comprises a broad spectrum of treatment strategies and as of yet no optimal strategy has been identified. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review is to assess different functional treatment strategies for acute lateral ankle ligament ruptures in adults. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma Group specialised register (December 2001), the Cochra

Eversion during external rotation of the human cadaver foot produces high ankle sprains.

While high ankle sprains are often clinically ascribed to excessive external foot rotation, no experimental study documents isolated anterior tibiofibular ligament (ATiFL) injury under this loading. We hypothesized that external rotation of a highly everted foot would generate ATiFL injury, in contrast to deltoid ligament injury from external rotation of a neutral foot. Twelve (six pairs) male cadaveric lower extremity limbs underwent external foot rotation until gross failure. All limbs were positioned in 20° of dorsiflexion and restrained with elastic athletic tape. Right limbs were in neutr

Ask the doctor. I sprained my ankle pretty badly a few weeks ago and was taken to the emergency room. It took three hours before I saw a doctor. Why are emergency rooms so crowded and the waits so long just to be seen?

The peroneus reaction time during sudden inversion test: systematic review.

The purpose of the study was to determine whether peroneal reaction time is influenced by ankle's impairment in subjects with ankle injury assessed by surface electromyography. The studies were identified by electronic research by two independent reviewers at the following databases: MEDLINE (1966-2009), EMBASE (1980-2009), LILACS (1982-2009), CINAHL (1982-2009) and, SPORTDiscus (1975-2009). Studies were divided into following groups: I--subjects with injury (paired by the opposite limb); II--subjects with or without injury (paired by limbs from different subjects) and III--subjects with or wi

Panoramic ultrasound to measure in vivo tendo Achilles strain.

BACKGROUND: The tendo Achilles (TA) is a tendon very susceptible to injury. Biomechanical methodologies for exploring tendon strain are limited, however, as they are typically performed in vitro or by indirectly measuring the displacement of reference markers. By using panoramic ultrasound, this study reports a novel approach to acquire direct, in vivo tendon extension data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sonographic scans were acquired between two in vivo landmarks following a consistent pathway along the long axis of the distal TA. Ten subjects were scanned with an unloaded tendon and then when res

True submalleolar accessory ossicles causing impingement of the ankle.

True ossicle in the distal portion of the malleolus is only sporadically observed, and related disease has been rarely reported. We present two cases of atypical ankle impingement resulting from an ankle sprain. Plain radiographs revealed true submalleolar ossicles. Conservative treatment failed, and arthroscopy was performed. Instability of the ossicle and surrounding fibrotic soft tissue was evident; a gap between the ossicle and the tip of the malleolus seen during plantar flexion of the ankle disappeared in dorsal flexion, resulting in compression of the surrounding soft tissue. Arthroscop

Interventions for the prevention of first time and recurrent ankle sprains.

The uses of external support and balance/coordination training have demonstrated to be effective interventions for the prevention of ankle sprains, especially in those who have a history of ankle sprain. The purpose of this article is to identify areas where evidence has been established to support the use of these interventions for the prevention and enhancement of outcomes of lateral ankle sprain. In addition, areas of deficiency in the evidence are discussed related to these interventions. Finally, future directions for clinicians and researchers as per the use of these interventions are di

Evidence-based approach to treatment of acute traumatic syndesmosis (high ankle) sprains.

Ankle sprains in the athlete are one of the most common injuries, and syndesmosis or "high-ankle" sprains seem to being diagnosed at an increasing rate. As a result, there has been a heightened interest in recognizing and treating these difficult injuries on a timely basis, particularly in the athlete. Although the recognition and diagnosis of these injuries have improved, there still exists a paucity of information on optimal conservative and operative management. In this paper, a systematic review of the literature was conducted to provide an evidence-based rationale in the diagnosis and tre

[Surgical indication of ankle joint supination trauma?].

Even for severe ankle sprains the non-operative, functional treatment is the therapy of choice. The prognosis is good: persisting symptoms and instability are rare and the outcome seems to be independent of initial therapy. An indication for primary operation is an exception. In case of remaining symptoms the patient should be referred to an orthopedic surgeon for further diagnostic studies (MRI) and possibly secondary operative stabilization.

[The syndrome of external ligament sprain in the horse].

The treatment of acute complete (grade III) tears of the lateral ligaments of the ankle has generated much controversy in the medical literature. Functional treatment has become the standard treatment as it has been shown that there is no significant difference in long term results whatever the treatment (operative repair and cast, cast alone, or early controlled mobilization). Functional treatment includes only a short period of protection by tape bandage or brace and allows early weight-bearing. Major trauma with avulsion of bone and severe ligamentous damage on both medial and lateral sides

The ankle joint: the evaluation and treatment of sprains.

Nurse practitioners in a variety of settings may frequently be called upon to examine a patient with an ankle sprain. These sprains are extremely common and are easily and successfully treated conservatively. However, a chronically unstable ankle may result if certain treatments are not instituted almost immediately after the injury. For the purpose of this article, the anatomy of the ankle and its examination are reviewed, including the ligaments injured with inversion, eversion, dorsiflexion, and plantar flexion injuries. Key studies and laxity tests are described. Principles of treatment ar

[Distorsions and dislocations of the finger joints].

Injuries of the finger joints with damage to the capsule and ligaments are quite common. Nevertheless early diagnosis may be missed since patients look for relief only after a period of longstanding pain. A careful clinical and X-ray diagnosis is the prerequisite for appropriate treatment. Surgery is still indicated for most of the injuries of the ulnar ligament of the MP-joint of the thumb. Sprains or dislocations of the middle joint of fingers are quite usual. In most instances they may be treated by immobilisation or functional treatment. Persistent subluxation after reduction of the joint

Treatment of the inversion ankle sprain: comparison of different modes of compression and cryotherapy.

Relatively few studies have been performed to examine the effectiveness of different methods of treatment for the inversion ankle sprain. In this study, restoration of function following a grade II inversion sprain was compared among 34 subjects who received one of three methods of treatment, each of which incorporated an Air-Stirrup brace. The methods included uniform compression provided by elastic tape, focal compression provided by a U-shaped device, and focal compression with simultaneous cryotherapy. Although the results failed to demonstrate statistical significance at the .05 level (p

Temporomandibular disorder associated with sacroiliac sprain.

A case of the external derangement-type temporomandibular disorder (TMD), temporarily relieved following chiropractic sacro-occipital technique (SOT) treatment, including SOT category II blocking to reduce sacroiliac sprain, is presented. Symptom exacerbation midway through the course of treatment followed additional dental work; symptom remission followed additional SOT treatment. Freedom from symptoms is maintained with a 3-wk treatment interval. There appears to be a cause-effect relationship between external derangement-type TMD and sacroiliac sprain. Concurrent, coordinated chiropractic a

Anterolateral impingement of the ankle.

Anterolateral impingement syndrome of the ankle is caused by entrapment of the hypertrophic soft tissue in the lateral gutter. The impingement process begins when an inversion sprain tears the anterior talofibular, and/or the calcaneofibular ligament. The ligamentous injury is not severe enough to cause chronic instability; however, inadequate immobilization and rehabilitation may lead to chronic inflammation in the ligament, resulting in formation of scar tissue. This tissue then becomes trapped between the talus and the lateral malleolus, causing irritation, pain, and further synovitis. The

Effect of Gz forces and head movements on cervical erector spinae muscle strain.

A portable surface-integrated EMG (IEMG) device was used to investigate the strain caused by low and high Gz forces and head movements on the cervical erector spinae muscles during flight missions. The obtained IEMG activities were normalized by comparing them with activities representing maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of the cervical erector spinae muscles in each subject. The muscular strain increased with increasing Gz forces and head movements. Under +7.0 Gz the mean muscular strain was 5.9-fold compared with +1.0 Gz and was 37.9% of the MVC. In some individuals, the muscular toleranc
