The purpose of the present study was to investigate the development of verapamil-induced cardiorenal failure and the response of epidermal ionocytes in zebrafish embryos to this syndrome. Zebrafish embryos were exposed to verapamil for 24 h at different developmental stages (48, 72, and 96 h post-fertilization). Isolated left ventricular noncompaction (IVNC) is a rare congenital form of cardiomyopathy. Intravenous verapamil was given to two haemodynamically stable patients with persistent atrial tachycardia, resulting in circulatory arrest requiring CPR in one and collapse with unrecordable blood pressure in the other. Verapamil and norverapamil trough plasma levels were measured in 22 children, aged from 15 days to 17 years, under chronic oral treatment with the drug (mean daily dose +/- SD: 4.9 +/- 1.4 mg/kg) for supraventricular tachyarrhythmias (n = 20) or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (n = 2).
