Tolerance to a Hair Dye Product Containing 2-Methoxymethyl-P-Phenylenediamine in an Ethnically Diverse Population of P-Phenylenediamine-Allergic Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis after exposure to p-phenylenediamine (PPD)-containing hair dye products is a common and important clinical problem. Because there is a high rate of cross-elicitation of allergic contact dermatitis to other important hair dye products (such as p-toluene diamine and other aminophenol hair dyes) in PPD-allergic patients, safer alternative dyes with excellent hair coloring options are needed. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to study tolerance to Me-PPD in a PPD-allergic cohort. METHODS: Twenty ethnically diverse volunteers with a history of contact dermatitis

Patch testing in oral lichenoid lesions of uncertain etiology.

BACKGROUND: The benefit of patch testing patients with oral lichenoid lesions (OLL) is still debated. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the results of patch testing in patients with multiple amalgams and multiple OLL, where the etiology of the oral mucosal disease was unclear. METHODS: Patients referred from an oral medicine clinic were patch tested to the British Society of Cutaneous Allergy standard series, dental and materials series, and, in 1 patient, the dental methacrylate series also. Patients' responses to amalgam removal were assessed during a mean follow-up of 2.6 (range, 0-4.75) years. RES

Flexural eczema versus atopic dermatitis.

Flexural eczema and atopic dermatitis are frequently synonymized. As respiratory atopy is rarely tested for and found in these patients, systematically equating a flexural distribution of dermatitis with atopic dermatitis may too frequently result in misclassified diagnoses and potentially missed opportunity for intervention toward improving patients' symptoms and quality of life. We present a critical review of the available evidence for the atopic dermatitis diagnosis and discuss the similarities between atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis. Because neither flexural predilection

Polysensitization and individual susceptibility to allergic contact dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with allergic contact dermatitis to 1 antigen have been shown to be at increased risk of developing delayed type hypersensitivity reactions to additional antigens. Both environmental and genetic factors likely influence the risk of sensitization. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether polysensitization occurs at a higher frequency than would be expected based on chance and whether polysensitization occurs more often in subsets of patients with hand involvement and atopic dermatitis. METHODS: From a database of patch test results from a single practitio

Acrylate Systemic Contact Dermatitis.

Acrylates, the 2012 American Contact Dermatitis Society allergen of the year, are found in a range of products including the absorbent materials within feminine hygiene pads. When fully polymerized, acrylates are nonimmunogenic; however, if not completely cured, the monomers can be potent allergens.A 28-year-old woman is presented, who had her teeth varnished with Isodan (Septodont, Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, France) containing HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) with no initial reaction. Approximately 1 month later, the patient developed a genital dermatitis secondary to her feminine hygiene pads.

Treatment of alopecia areata with topical sensitizers.

For those with severe alopecia areata, with greater than 50% scalp involvement, topical immunotherapy with diphenylcyclopropenone or squaric acid dibutylester is considered the treatment of choice. This article not only reviews the safety and efficacy of topical sensitizers for the treatment of alopecia areata but also highlights strides that have been made in the literature concerning their use in pediatric populations, molecular mechanisms of efficacy, and improved safety through targeted delivery methods.

Methylchloroisothiazolinone/Methylisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone allergy.

BACKGROUND: Preservatives used in cosmetics tend to be, by their nature, allergenic. Methylisothiazolinone (MI) has been used as a sole preservative in multiple cosmetics, household goods, and toiletries. A current epidemic of MI has recently been reported in Europe. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to study the prevalence of methylchloroisothiazolinone/MI (MCI/MI) and MI allergy in a Bangkok dermatology clinic. METHODS: During January 2009 to June 2014, 3253 consecutive patients tested with 100 ppm (0.01%) MCI/MI and patients tested with 2000 ppm (0.2%) MI were included in the study. R

Formaldehyde.

Formaldehyde is the American Contact Dermatitis Society Contact Allergen of the Year for 2015. The exposure is widespread, and contact allergy might be difficult to suspect in the individual dermatitis patient. The relevance of contact allergy to formaldehyde might also be difficult to evaluate. Recently, however, several studies have been performed aimed at enhancing the patch test technique and evaluating the clinical relevance of contact allergy to formaldehyde. The patch test concentration of formaldehyde has been recommended by the European Environmental Contact Dermatitis Research Group

Epidermal Expression of Filaggrin/Profilaggrin Is Decreased in Atopic Dermatitis: Reverse Association With Mast Cell Tryptase and IL-6 but Not With Clinical Severity.

BACKGROUND: A decrease in filaggrin expression contributes to the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD) and can be modified by inflammatory factors. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the correlation of (pro)filaggrin (filaggrin and profilaggrin) expression with clinical severity in AD and with mast cell (MC) tryptase, chymase, and IL-6. METHODS: Punch biopsies were collected from 17 patients with moderate-to-severe AD and from 10 psoriatic patients. Atopic dermatitis severity was measured using different clinical parameters. (Pro)filaggrin, MC tryptase, chymase, and IL-6 we

Assessment of nickel and cobalt release from jewelry from a non-nickel directive country.

BACKGROUND: A directive restricting nickel release from jewelry and other skin-contact products has not been initiated in Thailand or in the United States. The prevalence of nickel and cobalt allergies is increasing, and the main cause of sensitization seems to be jewelry. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate nickel and cobalt release from jewelry available in Thai marketplaces and to study the factors associated with nickel and cobalt release. METHODS: Used costume jewelry items were collected from volunteers. They were tested with the dimethylglyoxime and cobalt tests. RESULTS: Five hundre

Oral allergy syndrome (pollen-food allergy syndrome).

Oral allergy syndrome (OAS) or pollen-food allergy syndrome (PFS) is a hypersensitivity reaction to plant-based foods, manifesting most commonly with pruritus of the lips, tongue, and mouth. Unlike simple food allergy, OAS requires prior sensitization to a cross-reacting inhalant allergen rather than direct sensitization to a specific food protein. In this review, we summarize the clinical features and pathophysiology of OAS and provide an overview of known pollen-food associations.

Cinnamon spice and everything not nice: many features of intraoral allergy to cinnamic aldehyde.

Intraoral allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is an uncommonly reported entity. The most commonly implicated allergens are metals that are incorporated into dental appliances. Intraoral ACD to nonmetal allergens is even less frequently described. Cinnamic aldehyde is widely used as a flavoring agent in foods and dentifrices. However, intraoral ACD to cinnamon flavoring agents has only been sporadically reported. In these cases, a variety of sources have been implicated, including candy, chewing gum, mouthwash, lip sunscreen, cinnamon toast, volatile oils, and toothpaste. The clinical presentatio

Contact Allergy to Surfactants in a Hypoallergenic Liquid Cleanser.

: Surfactants are a relatively rare cause of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and testing patients to personal care products containing these ingredients has historically been difficult given their irritant properties. Using the semiopen technique, we were able to identify ACD to a hypoallergenic liquid cleanser in 2 patients who presented to our patch test clinic only months apart. Additional patch testing to individual ingredients led to subsequent identification of 3 novel surfactant allergens (sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, isostearamidopropyl morpholine lactate, and disodium lauroamphodiace

Patch testing to a textile dye mix by the international contact dermatitis research group.

BACKGROUND: Disperse dyes are well-known contact sensitizers not included in the majority of commercially available baseline series. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the outcome of patch testing to a textile dye mix (TDM) consisting of 8 disperse dyes. METHODS: Two thousand four hundred ninety-three consecutive dermatitis patients in 9 dermatology clinics were patch tested with a TDM 6.6%, consisting of Disperse (D) Blue 35, D Yellow 3, D Orange 1 and 3, D Red 1 and 17, all 1.0% each, and D Blue 106 and D Blue 124, each 0.3%. 90 reacted positively to the TDM. About 92.2% of the patients allergic to
