BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to analyze effectiveness and safety of packing the medullary canal of the tibia and femur with Herafill (Heraeus Medical GmbH, Wehrheim, Germany), a void filler and antibiotic carrier, during second stage revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI).
METHODS: Two groups were formed of 28 consecutive patients during second stage revision TKA, comparable for gender and age. The study group received Herafill, while the control group did not. The average follow-up was 52 months (minimum 36 months).

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare the prosthetic joint infection (PJI) rate after knee revision arthroplasty in two consecutive periods with different antibiotic prophylaxis: short (one day) versus long (five days).
METHODS: From January 2007 to September 2010 antibiotic prophylaxis consisted of 800 mg of teicoplanin and 2 g of ceftazidime intravenously and 1 g of ceftazidime two hours after the first dose. From October 2010, it was prolonged post-operatively using vancomycin and ceftazidime intravenously until the fifth day.

Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever, may cause culture-negative vascular graft infections that can be diagnosed by serology and molecular biology. We present a case of vascular graft infection detected by positron emission tomography (PET) scanner. The presence of C. burnetii was confirmed by high antibody titers and positive polymerase chain reaction specific for C. burnetii. This report emphasizes the relevance of the PET scanner in the diagnosis of infection when used in association with Q fever serology and molecular biology for the etiological identification of C. burnetii.

There are few reports in the literature of the diagnosis and treatment of the infected shoulder arthroplasty. Most deal with resection arthroplasty and two-stage exchange surgery. Prospectively from January 1991 to January 1993, the efficacy and complications of 104 polyurethane, double-lumen femoral vein catheterizations (FVC) in 96 renal failure patients were studied. Ambulation was allowed in the hospital as well as at home while the catheter was in. There were 53 males and 43 females, with ages ranging from 13 to 87 (mean, 48.3 +/- 19.7) years.
