Preoperative diagnosis of pancreatic body and tail cyst: a case of gastric bronchogenic cyst and literature review.

Bronchogenic cyst is a condition arising from congenital abnormalities in the respiratory system. It can be classified into intrapulmonary, mediastinal, and ectopic types depending on its location. Ectopic types are rare, and diagnosis typically depends on pathological examination. This paper presents a case of a female patient admitted to our hospital with abdominal pain. Preoperative imaging revealed a mass in the tail of the pancreas, which was surgically excised. Postoperative pathology confirmed the diagnosis of a gastric bronchogenic cyst. Based on the patient's diagnosis and treatment, …

Intrapulmonary Bronchogenic Cyst Adjacent to the Inferior Pulmonary Ligament Mimicking a Paraesophageal Mediastinal Cyst: A Case Report.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital foregut malformations that most commonly arise in the mediastinum. Intrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts are less frequent and may present diagnostic challenges when located adjacent to mediastinal structures. We report a case of an intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst that closely mimicked a paraesophageal mediastinal cyst on preoperative imaging. A 72-year-old man was referred to our department after a cystic lesion was incidentally detected during a routine health examination. CT demonstrated a 37-mm well-circumscribed cystic lesion in the right lower thorax. …

A Curious Cyst Beyond the Thorax: A Rare Case of Extrathoracic Bronchogenic Cyst Over the Shoulder in a Child.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital malformations originating from abnormal budding of the tracheobronchial tree during embryogenesis. While typically found in the mediastinum or lungs, extrathoracic presentations, particularly in the scapular or shoulder region, are exceedingly rare. We report the case of a three-year-old female with a cystic lesion over the left supraclavicular area that was histopathologically diagnosed as a bronchogenic cyst. This case underscores the importance of including bronchogenic cysts in the differential diagnosis of pediatric cystic masses outside the thorax. …

Gastric bronchogenic cyst pooled case analysis: a case report and systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Gastric bronchogenic cyst constitutes a rare form of ectopic bronchogenic cyst, with an estimated incidence of less than 1 in 68,000 to 1 in 42,000. This study reported a case who was preoperatively misdiagnosed as gastrointestinal stromal tumor and reviewed the literature on gastric bronchogenic cyst to summarize its clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, pathological manifestations, and prognosis. METHODS: A systematic search of the literature in the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and Scopus databases was conducted by two independent reviewers focusing on cas…

Association Between Unenhanced CT Features and Perioperative Outcomes in Bronchogenic Cyst Resection.

Background: Reliable predictors of perioperative risk beyond symptomatology in bronchogenic cyst (BC) resection are lacking. We aimed to compare perioperative outcomes across different imaging features to identify perioperative risk factors. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 57 patients who underwent pathologically confirmed BC resection at a single tertiary center from 2004 to 2023. Preoperative unenhanced CT images were retrospectively reviewed for four prespecified imaging features. Only unenhanced images were used for imaging-feature classification and Hounsfield-unit m…

Congenital bronchogenic cyst: A case study on early detection and surgical intervention.

INTRODUCTION: The patient showed an uneventful recovery post-surgery, underscoring the significance of early intervention in managing rare congenital anomalies. Bronchogenic cysts constitute 13-15 % of congenital cystic lung diseases and 6 % of childhood mediastinal masses. Arising from abnormal foregut development during embryogenesis, these cysts can be asymptomatic or cause serious complications, such as airway or vascular compression. CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-day-old female newborn presented with a pulmonary cystic lesion in the left upper lung lobe, identified via routine antenatal ultras…

Esophageal bronchogenic cyst treated with submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection: two case reports.

INTRODUCTION: Although esophageal bronchogenic cysts are benign diseases, they may be accompanied by serious complications and have the possibility of recurrence. Therefore, once confirmed, it is necessary to treat the esophagobronchial cyst when the contraindication is excluded. Endoscopic treatment is usually used for lesions with small diameter and shallow origin, and has the advantages of small surgical trauma and risk, which can reduce the psychological burden of patients to a certain extent, help them to recover quickly, and lower hospital costs. CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1 is a 54-year-o…

[Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma Suspectedly Developed from a Bronchogenic Cyst in the Posterior Mediastinum].

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma developing from a bronchogenic cyst is extremely rare. We present a case of a 74-year-old man with a cystic mass in the posterior mediastinum detected by chest computed tomography( CT) and magnetic resonance imaging. A bronchogenic cyst or neurogenic tumor was suspected. He did not accept surgical treatment and was followed up at outpatient. Since the enlargement of the mass was shown by chest CT after seven years, the resection of the mass was performed by thoracoscopic surgery, however the cyst wall remained due to the severe adhesion and the residual mucosa was caut…

Robotic pericardial patch repair of the bronchus intermedius after bronchogenic cyst removal.

Bronchogenic cysts are often asymptomatic mediastinal masses that are usually diagnosed as incidental findings. Surgical resection can be performed with robotic surgery, and if repair of the airway is needed, this can be achieved by direct closure or by applying a pericardial patch. We present a case of a 45-year-old woman diagnosed with a mass in the visceral mediastinum. She had undergone resection adopting a 4-armed, completely portal robotic technique. However, the removal of the cyst had led to a large tear in the bronchus intermedius. The bronchus was then repaired with a 2.4-cm-long per…

Video-assisted mediastinoscopic drainage of a bronchogenic cyst presenting with cardiac dysfunction.

Bronchogenic cysts originate from the anomalous development of the ventral foregut. The usual presentation of bronchogenic cyst in the mediastinum is related to cyst infection or tracheobronchial compression. We describe a case of bronchogenic cyst presenting with cardiac dysfunction and hemodynamic compromise in a 23-year-old man with chest pain and progressive dyspnea. A high body mass index and respiratory dysfunction increased the risk of open surgery. Therefore, video-assisted cervical mediastinoscopy was performed and de-roofing of the cyst achieved resolution of his cardiovascular dysfu…

Infected intraparenchymal bronchogenic cyst mimicking recurrent lung abscess in a young adult.

A 23 year old female with a past history of a lung abscess diagnosed at the age of 13 years presented with recurrent episodes of productive cough. Chest radiograph and a high resolution CT scan of the thorax led to the diagnosis of a left lower lobe lung abscess. She underwent a successful thoracotomy and a left lower lobe lobectomy. Histopathological examination revealed the diagnosis of an infected congenital bronchogenic cyst. The recent literature on this is reviewed.

Endoscope-assisted thoracoscopic technique for esophageal bronchogenic cyst which presented elevated CA125.

A 26-year-old male was admitted to our hospital with a complaint of mild dysphagia. Preoperative examinations revealed a cystic lesion at the lower esophagus, thought to be a bronchogenic cyst. The patient underwent successful thoracoscopic tumor extirpation, assisted by endoscopy, without undergoing major thoracotomy. Thoracoscopic surgery is recommended for this entity, but the muscle layer is often injured. Endoscopic ultrasonography was very useful, as it could detect damage to the proper muscle layer of the esophagus near the tumor. Thus, we could predict preoperatively that the defect in…

[A case report of extralobar pulmonary sequestration associated with mediastinal bronchogenic cyst].

A 48-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of abnormal shadow on the chest X-ray. Chest contrast CT scan showed roundly mass in the posterior mediastinum which were combined with and without contrast elements, and chest MRI (T2 weighted) showed high signal intensity. These features suggested mediastinal cyst or extralobar sequestration. The operation was performed through left 6th intercostal thoracotomy. Two different lesions connected to the mediastinum were confirmed, a cystic tumor and small accessory lung. The former was diagnosed as bronchogenic cyst and the latter as extra…

Bronchogenic cyst of the right hemidiaphragm mimicking a hydatid cyst of the liver: report of the first pediatric case.

Bronchogenic cyst (BC), which develops from abnormal budding of the tracheal diverticulum or ventral foregut, is a congenital bronchopulmonary malformation. Localization of the BC varies depending on the level of the abnormal budding. Thoracic or abdominal-sited diaphragmatic lesions are the rarest presentations of the BC. We present a case of BC that originated from the diaphragm and mimicking hydatid cyst of the liver in a 19-month-old girl. Diagnosis of a diaphragmatic lesion was confirmed during laparotomy and complete resection was successful.

Presternal Subcutaneous Bronchogenic Cyst: An Unusual Ectopic Presentation Of A Congenital Lesion.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare benign congenital lesions, most commonly located within the thoracic cavity, particularly in the mediastinum or pulmonary parenchyma. Subcutaneous presternal bronchogenic cysts are exceedingly uncommon, with fewer than 80 cases reported in the literature since their first description in 1945. We report a rare case of a 14- year- old girl presenting with a progressive presternal midline swelling since childhood, previously managed by needle aspiration with subsequent recurrence. Thoracic computed tomography suggested a thyroglossal duct cyst. Complete surgical excisi…

Unusual tumour of the anterior mediastinum: Intrathymic bronchogenic cyst mimicking a thymoma.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital cystic lesions. Their occurrence in the anterior mediastinum as intrathymic bronchogenic cyst is extremely uncommon. These cysts present as mediastinal masses, and are generally asymptomatic and often diagnosed incidentally. Despite being benign, their intrathymic location and variable radiological appearance can mimic more common conditions such as thymomas. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice to confirm the diagnosis. We report a case involving a partial thymectomy performed for a suspected thymoma in the anterior mediastinum, which was subseq…
