Candidacy for Cochlear implantation: Validating a novel Cochlear implant candidacy calculator against gold-standard, in-clinic audiometric assessments.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implants (CI) are reliable implantable devices that are highly cost-effective in reducing the burden of hearing loss at an individual and societal scale. However, only 10% of CI candidates are aware of their candidacy and receive a CI. A web-based screening tool to assess CI candidacy may make many more individuals aware of their candidacy for cochlear implantation. The objective of this study was to validate and optimize the online Cochlear Implant Candidacy Calculator against in-clinic audiometric testing. METHODS: Audiogram data and word discrimination scores for 132 p…

Bilateral cochlear implantation versus unilateral cochlear implantation in deaf children: Effects of sentence context and listening conditions on recognition of spoken words in sentences.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have investigated the efficacy of bilateral cochlear implants (CIs) in deaf children. The current study focused on the use of sentence-context information in different listening conditions to better explain the benefits of bilateral cochlear implantation. We compared the word recognition abilities of children with bilateral CIs and children with unilateral CIs in relation to sentence context and listening conditions. Additionally, we investigated whether sentence context- and listening condition-dependent word recognition scores can differentiate children with bila…

A Review of the Clinical Applicability of Neurotrophins in Cochlear Implantation.

Neurotrophins reportedly improve hearing outcomes when used in combination with cochlear implants, as they promote the survival of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) and stimulate SGN neurite outgrowth in animal models of sensorineural hearing loss. However, their applicability to human patients remains unknown. This review examines the clinical applicability of neurotrophins based on advances in drug delivery techniques to the inner ear and discusses their potential for future application in human patients.

Evaluative audiometry after cochlear implant provision.

BACKGROUND: One of the main treatment goals in cochlear implant (CI) patients is to improve speech perception. One of the target parameters is speech intelligibility in quiet. However, treatment results show a high variability, which has not been sufficiently explained so far. The aim of this noninterventional retrospective study was to elucidate this variability using a selected population of patients in whom etiology was not expected to have a negative impact on postoperative speech intelligibility. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Audiometric findings of the CI follow-up of 28 adult patients after 6

A Review Electroconvulsive Therapy in Cochlear Implant Patients.

The use of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in cochlear implant (CI) users is debatable. Currently, no consensus statement exists about the safety for the patients and the implants. Here, we present a summary of the existing literature on ECT in CI users, consisting of 4 case reports and a cadaveric study. No harm to the patients or the CIs was reported. Based on our review, we have found no evidence to indicate that ECT in CI users is contraindicated.

Cochlear implants: Visual evoked potentials study.

UNLABELLED: Cochlear implants (CIs) are a successful alternative in cases with severe-to-profound HL. In these individuals, visual cross-modal re-organization can occur because of hearing loss where the visual cortex will recruit auditory cortical areas for visual processing. OBJECTIVES: This work is designed to study visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in children fitted with CIs in comparison to normal hearing children. METHOD: This work included 2 groups of children: Group I included 20 normal hearing children and study group included 25 children fitted with unilateral CIs. All cases were sub

Antibacterial Polysiloxane Polymers and Coatings for Cochlear Implants.

Within this study, new materials were synthesized and characterized based on polysiloxane modified with different ratios of N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) and crosslinked via UV-assisted thiol-ene addition, in order to obtain efficient membranes able to resist bacterial adherence and biofilm formation. These membranes were subjected to in vitro testing for microbial adherence against S. pneumoniae using standardized tests. WISTAR rats were implanted for 4 weeks with crosslinked siloxane samples without and with NAC. A set of physical characterization methods was employed to assess the chemical stru
