Immunolocalization of ion transport proteins in human autosomal dominant polycystic kidney epithelial cells.

The kidneys of patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease become massively enlarged due to the progressive expansion of myriad fluid-filled cysts. The epithelial cells that line the cyst walls are responsible for secreting the cyst fluid, but the mechanism through which this secretion occurs is not well established. Recent studies suggest that renal cyst epithelial cells actively secrete Cl across their apical membranes, which in turn drives the transepithelial movement of Na and water. The characteristics of this secretory flux suggest that it is dependent upon the participati…

Immunosuppressive activity of bovine follicular fluid on bovine T lymphocytes in vitro.

Follicular fluid from bovine follicles at various stages of the estrous cycle and cysts were tested in vitro for immunosuppressive activity. Mitogen-stimulated lymphocyte assays and the mixed lymphocyte reaction were used as test procedures and thymidine uptake was monitored. Follicular fluid and cyst fluid inhibited the deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis response of bovine lymphocytes to mitogenic and antigenic stimulation. The nature of the suppression varied with the mitogen or antigen assay used, with the estrual stage, with size of follicle within the diestrual stage, and with the type of ov…

Analysis of the chemical components of hydatid fluid from Echinococcus granulosus.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to explore the environment of Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus) protoscolices and their relationship with their host. METHODS: Proteins from the hydatid-cyst fluid (HCF) from E. granulosus were identified by proteomics. An inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES) was used to determine the elements, an automatic biochemical analyzer was used to detect the types and levels of biochemical indices, and an automatic amino acid analyzer was used to detect the types and levels of amino acids in the E. granulosus HCF. RESULTS: I)…

Long-term survival in six cats with mediastinal cysts.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Mediastinal cysts were diagnosed as incidental findings in six cats evaluated for non-thoracic disease, including staging for historical bladder leiomyosarcoma, flea dermatitis and hairballs, and hyperthyroidism. Radiographically, the cysts appeared as soft tissue opacities cranial to the heart. Ultrasound revealed the masses to be thin-walled, single lumen, anechoic, fluid-filled structures. One cat also had thoracic and abdominal CT performed for cancer staging; the CT revealed a well-defined, fluid-attenuating mass without peripheral contrast enhancement in the cranial

Glucose absorption drives cystogenesis in a human organoid-on-chip model of polycystic kidney disease.

In polycystic kidney disease (PKD), fluid-filled cysts arise from tubules in kidneys and other organs. Human kidney organoids can reconstitute PKD cystogenesis in a genetically specific way, but the mechanisms underlying cystogenesis remain elusive. Here we show that subjecting organoids to fluid shear stress in a PKD-on-a-chip microphysiological system promotes cyst expansion via an absorptive rather than a secretory pathway. A diffusive static condition partially substitutes for fluid flow, implicating volume and solute concentration as key mediators of this effect. Surprisingly, cyst-lining

Laparoscopic Management of a Giant Simple Hepatic Cyst: A Case Report.

Simple hepatic cysts follow an indolent course and are discovered incidentally on imaging modalities, often requiring no treatment. However, for large hepatic cysts presenting with pressure symptoms, treatment becomes necessary. We present a case of a 51-year-old woman presenting with complaints of progressive swelling over the right upper abdomen for one month, associated with abdominal pain for 15 days. She had undergone percutaneous aspiration for the same pathology previously done at another facility 15 days prior to presentation. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a 25x20

Cystic lesions of the brain. A classification based on pathogenesis, with consideration of histological and radiological features.

A classification of the existing multitude of cystic lesions of the brain is proposed, which allows an understanding of their genesis and consequent therapeutic implications, as well as their diagnostic characteristics. Essentially, cerebral cystic lesions may be classified into the following categories: Cysts containing CSF-like fluid, which include ex vacuo type cysts, such as leptomeningeal cysts, and cysts following surgical resection; cysts with fluid secreting walls and CSF-like content, such as arachnoid cysts; cysts associated with dysgenesis, for example Dandy-Walker cysts. The ex vac

Aneurysmal bone cyst-like areas as a sign of metastatic disease in the spinal column.

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are vascular lesions with well-defined radiological signs. A fairly common MRI finding in both ABC and other primary bone tumors with high vascularity is the presence of cysts with fluid-fluid levels. Metastatic lesions with fluid-fluid leveling have not previously been defined in the literature. We report three cases of fluid-fluid leveling of the axial skeleton in metastatic lesions. Two patients had single-level and one multi-level neoplastic disease with distinctive cysts showing fluid-fluid levels on MRI evaluation. Diagnosis of gastric carcinoma in two patien

A fetal lung lesion consisting of bronchogenic cyst, bronchopulmonary sequestration, and congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation: the missing link?

A fetus was found to have a large left thoracic cyst on routine prenatal ultrasound at 23 weeks of gestation. This lesion caused compression of the normal left lung tissue and contralateral mediastinal shift. At 23 weeks of gestation the cyst was percutaneously aspirated without subsequent reaccumulation of fluid. Serial ultrasounds showed decrease in the size of the cyst. The clinical diagnosis of congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation was made. At birth, the child had no respiratory distress, and a CT scan confirmed the finding of a fluid-filled cyst in the left chest. At the time of res

Calcified congenital arachnoid cyst with heterotopic neuroglia in wall.

Two unique findings, advanced calcification and ectopic neuroglia, were encountered in the wall of a giant congenital arachnoid cyst occurring in a 40 year old woman. The cyst almost totally filled the supratentorial subdural space of the left hemicranial cavity, was not connected with the subarachnoid space, and thus developed intra-arachnoidally. Its congenitally derived nature was supported by the unique finding of heterotopic neuroglia in the wall. Congenital arachnoid cyst must be distinguished from various cystic lesions within the central nervous system, including the neuroepithelial cy

Tumour necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-1 and -6 in fibrocystic breast disease.

The risk of developing breast cancer is higher in women presenting gross cystic disease (cysts > 3 mm in diameter) of the breast with intracystic K+/Na+ > 3 as compared with K+/Na+ < 3. The present study reports the levels of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-1 (IL-1), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the breast cyst fluid of women with gross cystic disease and analyses the relationship between the intracystic concentration of these cytokines, sex steroid hormones, and the K+/Na+ ratio. The concentration of these cytokines, estradiol, testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate…

Epithelial transport in polycystic kidney disease.

In autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), the genetic defect results in the slow growth of a multitude of epithelial cysts within the renal parenchyma. Cysts originate within the glomeruli and all tubular structures, and their growth is the result of proliferation of incompletely differentiated epithelial cells and the accumulation of fluid within the cysts. The majority of cysts disconnect from tubular structures as they grow but still accumulate fluid within the lumen. The fluid accumulation is the result of secretion of fluid driven by active transepithelial Cl- secretion. Pr

CART for ascites accumulation and dialysis difficulty after hepatic cyst fenestration and bilateral nephrectomy in ADPKD: a case report.

Hepatomegaly with hepatic cysts constitutes a common extrarenal manifestation of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), often resulting in mass effects and occasionally necessitating cyst fenestration to alleviate abdominal distension. Nonetheless, persistent cyst fluid leakage as a postoperative complication frequently leads to refractory ascites, for which treatment options are limited. In this report, we present a 62-year-old female patient with ADPKD undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. She received bilateral nephrectomy and hepatic cyst fenestration to mitigate abdominal di…

Ependymal tissue in microphthalmia with cyst.

PURPOSE: To report the nature of the contents of a cyst associated with microphthalmia and optic nerve coloboma in a male infant. DESIGN: Clinicopathologic report. CASE REPORT: A male infant in good general health presented with a massively swollen, protruded left lower eyelid since birth. The globe was not identifiable. MRI disclosed a microphthalmic globe in the upper nasal orbit and an orbital cystic mass consisting of various compartments. Examination of the fellow eye showed a large optic nerve coloboma. As the protrusion of the left lower eyelid was progressive, aspiration of the cyst

Pseudoascites: report of three cases.

Giant intra-abdominal cysts masquerading as ascites are rare. We present three cases with giant intra-abdominal cysts (one mesenteric cyst, two ovarian) that were initially misdiagnosed as refractory ascites in another hospital. On ultrasound examination, displacement of bowel loops to outside the fluid without dispersion of fluid around the liver and spleen were the main findings suggesting the possibility of giant intra-abdominal cysts in our patients. In all three patients, the diagnosis of giant intra-abdominal cysts was confirmed after their total excision. Clinicians must consider proces

In vitro formation and expansion of cysts derived from human renal cortex epithelial cells.

Acquired renal cysts derive from terminally differentiated tubular epithelium in adults as a consequence of increased epithelial cell proliferation, fluid accumulation and extracellular matrix remodelling. To understand better how human epithelial cysts may be initiated and progressively expand, cells from primary cultures of normal human adult renal cortex were dispersed in polymerized type I collagen. The transparent matrix permitted repeated observation by light microscopy of cyst formation from individual renal cells. The cyst cells reacted strongly with distal nephron histochemical marker

N-acetyl resonances in in vivo and in vitro NMR spectroscopy of cystic ovarian tumors.

An unassigned and prominent resonance in the region from delta 2.0-2.1 ppm has frequently been found in the in vivo MR spectra of cancer patients. We demonstrated the presence of this resonance with in vivo MRS in the cyst fluid of a patient with an ovarian tumor. (1)H-NMRS on the aspirated cyst fluid of this patient confirmed the observation. A complex of resonances was observed between 2.0 and 2.1 ppm. It was also present in 11 additional ovarian cyst fluid samples randomly chosen from our biobank. The resonance complex was significantly more prominent in samples from mucinous tumors than in…
