OBJECTIVES: Clostridium difficile diarrhoea (CDD) cases treated with intravenous immunoglobulin during a 2 year period were reviewed to determine disease severity and response to treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Of 580 CD cytotoxin-positive patients, five received intravenous immunoglobulin because of protracted and/or recurrent CDD (median duration 50 days, range 45-64); two had biopsy- proven pseudomembranous colitis. Transgenic (Tg) mice expressing the human poliovirus receptor (PVR) were vaccinated with inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) and evaluated for induced immunity against type 3 poliomyelitis. Spontaneous inhibitors of factor VIII (FVIII) are pathogenic IgG autoantibodies of restricted isotypic heterogeneity found in the plasma of patients presenting with bleeding episodes and low levels of FVIII. We now report the presence of a natural FVIII-neutralizing activity in 85 of 500 plasma samples (17%) from healthy donors. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using excretory-secretory antigens was developed to study the dynamics of the IgG antibody response to varying levels of Trichinella spiralis infection in the guinea pig. Cotton bract tannin, a major organic component of cotton dust, was tested for mitogenic activity upon human T lymphocytes. Tannin caused polyclonal activation of human T lymphocytes in vitro. The pattern of T-cell response to tannin was similar to the pattern seen in lymphocytes stimulated with the well-known plant lectin T-cell mitogens, PHA and ConA. We have studied the clinicopathological features of experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis (EAU) induced in Lewis rats by injection of different doses of rhodopsin and its illuminated form opsin. Rhodopsin consistently appears to be more pathogenic than opsin. With the present study, the effects of intravenous applications of Staphylococcus epidermidis (SE) on the course of experimental infections of mice with Listeria monocytogenes were evaluated.
