[Passive electrical constants of skeletal muscular fibres studied in different muscles of normal and thiamine deficient rats (author's transl)].

10 Some effects of thiamine deficiency were studied in three skeletal rat muscles, having different proportions of "fast" and "slow" fibres: extensor longus digiti IV (a nearly pure fast muscle), soleus (having a predominant population of slow fibres) and diaphragm muscle (mixed fibre population). 20 Cross section area of fibres (fig. 2) is reduced in thiamine deficient animals, mostly for fast fibres having a glycolytic metabolism, the histochemical profile of which tends to become similar to that of slow fibres, in which oxydative metabolism is predominant, as shown by a marked increase in s

Coupling effects of F-doping and Se-vacancies on SnSe2 as an anode for LIBs guided by first-principles calculations.

SnSe2, as a anode material with a theoretical specific capacity of up to 813 mAh g-1 and a unique wide-spaced lamellar structure, has been regarded as a potential stock of anode for lithium-ion batteries. However, its inherent low electronic conductivity and bulk effect have been the key factors hindering its electrochemical performance. In this study, focusing on enhancing the intrinsic conductivity of SnSe2, we innovatively introduced F-doping and Se-vacancies into its structure, successfully constructed F-SnSe2-x crystals, and deeply explored the structural features and lithium storage prop

Graphene as cellular interface: electromechanical coupling with cells.

Interfacing cells with nanomaterials such as graphene, nanowires, and carbon nanotubes is useful for the integration of cellular physiology with electrical read outs. Here we show the interfacing of graphene sheets on the surface of yeast cells, leading to electromechanical coupling between the sheets and the cells. The cells are viable after the interfacing. The response caused by physiologically stressing the cells by exposure to alcohols, which causes a change in cell volume, can be observed in the electrical signal through graphene. The change in the cell volume leads to straining of the s

Inhibition of auditory cortical neurons during phonation.

The neuronal activity of the auditory cortex in the squirrel monkey was investigated during phonation in order to study relationships between brain structures involved in phonation and audition. Responses of single cells in the superior temporal gyrus were extracellularly recorded during stimulation by self-produced vocalizations (elicited either through electrical stimulation of the central gray or uttered spontaneously), and by tape-recorded vocalizations played back together with other species-specific cells. More than half of those cells which reacted to the play-back of self-produced voca

Who do barium ions imitate acetylcholine?

The action of 1-4 mM barium on bullfrog sympathetic ganglion cells was studied using voltage clamp. Barium imitated the action of muscarine, causing depolarization, increased input resistance, tendency to repetitive firing, and a specific inhibition of a slow small outward current termed the M current. Barium did not produce significant short-term inhibition of three other outward currents; the delayed rectifier, the calcium-dependent K current, and the A current.

Inhibition of chloride secretion in human bronchial epithelial cells by cigarette smoke extract.

Chronic bronchitis, a disease mainly of cigarette smokers, shares many clinical features with cystic fibrosis, a disease of altered ion transport, suggesting that the negative effects of cigarette smoke on mucociliary clearance may be mediated through alterations in ion transport. We tested the hypothesis that cigarette smoke extract would inhibit chloride secretion in human bronchial epithelial cells. In agreement with studies in canine trachea, cigarette smoke extract inhibited net chloride secretion without affecting sodium transport. We performed microelectrode impalements and impedance an

Radiofrequency ablation: effect of surrounding tissue composition on coagulation necrosis in a canine tumor model.

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of surrounding tissue type on coagulation necrosis from radiofrequency (RF) ablation in a homogeneous anima … od flow. CONCLUSION: The characteristics of tissue that surrounds tumor, including vascularity and electric conductivity, affect ablation outcome. Predominance of tissue-specific characteristics will likely result in site-specific differences in RF-induced coagulation necrosis.

Free energy and electronic properties of water adsorption on the SnO2(110) surface.

A molecular understanding of the adsorption of water on SnO2 surfaces is crucial for several applications of this metal oxide, including cat … ing on the water adsorption mechanism. The relevance of these findings in explaining the changes in electric conductivity occurring in SnO2-based gas sensors upon water adsorption is discussed. Whereas associative adsorption leads to electron enrichment of the metal oxide surface, dissociative adsorption induces surface electron depletion. Both mechanisms are consisten …

An exceptionally conductive hydrogel for all-organic, ultraflexible, and chronic neural interfaces.

Chronic neural interfaces are essential for advancing brain-computer interfaces, neuroprosthetics, and neuromodulation technologies. However, a long-standing trade-off between performance and longevity persists due to the scarcity of materials that simultaneously achieve superior electrical performance, mechanical compliance, and biocompatibility. Here, we overcome this limitation with an all-organic, ultraflexible electrocorticography (ECoG) design that features a thickness of only 9 µm, achieving low electrode-tissue impedance and durability in vivo. Central to this design is a conductive hy

Optoelectronic-Coupled-Driven Microrobot for Biological Cargo Transport in Conductive Isosmotic Glucose Solution.

Electric field-driven micro/nanorobots, as micro/nanodevices with autonomous motion capability, have emerged as promising candidates for targeted cargo delivery in biomedical applications due to their advantages of label-free operation, selectivity, and controllability. In biological systems, many biological cargos need to be operated in conductive isosmotic solutions to ensure their viability. However, in the conductive solution, electric field-driven micro/nanorobots exhibit significantly reduced propulsion performance, despite retaining the capability to manipulate cargos by the dielectroph

Protocol for depositing transparent conductive Ta-doped SnO2 film by hollow cathode gas flow sputtering technology.

Transparent conductive Ta-doped SnO2 (SnO2: Ta) thin film with low surface roughness, low resistivity, and high carrier concentration is one potential alternative of commercial transparent conductive oxides (TCOs). Here, we present a protocol for fabricating tin oxide films by hollow cathode gas flow sputtering technology. We describe steps for preparing and cleaning substrate, and film deposition process on the fresh uncorroded float glass substrate. We then detail procedures for measuring the optical and electrical properties of the film. For complete details on the use and execution of this

Highly Stretchable, Transparent, Self-Healing Ion-Conducting Elastomers for Long-Term Reliable Human Motion Detection.

The flexible electronic sensor is a critical component of wearable devices, generally requiring high stretchability, excellent transmittance, conductivity, self-healing capability, and strong adhesion. However, designing ion-conducting elastomers meeting all these requirements simultaneously remains a challenge. In this study, a novel approach is presented to fabricate highly stretchable, transparent, and self-healing ion-conducting elastomers, which are synthesized via photo-polymerization of two polymerizable deep eutectic solvents (PDESs) monomers, i.e., methacrylic acid (MAA)/choline chlor

Preparation and characterization of zwitterion-substituted lignin/Nafion composite membranes.

In this study, a novel zwitterion-substituted lignin (ZL) containing amino and sulfonic acid groups was synthesized, and ZL/Nafion composite membranes were fabricated as proton exchange membranes. Kraft lignin was modified using an aminosilane and 1,3-propanesultone via a continuous grafting reaction to provide zwitterionic moieties. Chemical structural analyses confirmed the successful introduction of the zwitterion moiety into lignin. In particular, the surface charge of ZL is positive in an acidic medium and negative in a basic medium, suggesting that ZL is a zwitterionic material. ZL was i

Near IR Bandgap Semiconducting 2D Conjugated Metal-Organic Framework with Rhombic Lattice and High Mobility.

Two-dimensional conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) are emerging as a unique class of electronic materials. However, 2D c-MOFs with band gaps in the Vis-NIR and high charge carrier mobility are rare. Most of the reported conducting 2D c-MOFs are metallic (i.e. gapless), which largely limits their use in logic devices. Herein, we design a phenanthrotriphenylene-based, D2h -symmetric π-extended ligand (OHPTP), and synthesize the first rhombic 2D c-MOF single crystals (Cu2 (OHPTP)). The continuous rotation electron diffraction (cRED) analysis unveils the orthorhombic crystal structure

Ionic liquid-based electroactive materials: a novel approach for cardiac tissue engineering strategies.

Cardiac tissue regeneration strategies are increasingly taking advantage of electroactive scaffolds to actively recreate the tissue microenvironment. In this context, this work reports on advanced materials based on two different ionic liquids (ILs), 2-hydroxyethyl-trimethylammonium dihydrogen phosphate ([Ch][DHP]) and choline bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Ch][TFSI]), combined with poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) for the development of ionic electroactive IL/polymer hybrid materials for cardiac tissue engineering (TE). Support-Free PEDOT:PSS Fibers as Multifunctional Microelectrodes for In Vivo Neural Recording and Modulation.

In vivo microelectrodes are essential for neuroscience studies. However, development of microelectrodes with both flexibility and multifunctionality for recording chemical and electrical signals in the same extracellular microspace and modulating neural activity remains challenging. Here, we find that pure PEDOT:PSS fibers (i.e., support-free) exhibit high conductivity, fast heterogeneous electron transfer, and suitable charge storage and injection capabilities, and can thus directly act as microelectrodes not only for chemical and electrophysiological recording in the same extracellular micro
