Effect of Combining Intrauterine Cerebral Blood Flow Changes with Electrical Activity on Prognostic Evaluation of Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate the value of combining intrauterine cerebral blood flow changes with brain electrical activity examination in evaluating the prognosis of brain injury. METHODS: A total of 90 preterm infants were enrolled and divided into 2 groups: the brain damaged preterm infants group (n = 55) and the nonbrain damaged preterm infants group (n = 35). The diagnostic efficacy of combining intrauterine cerebral blood flow changes with electroencephalogram (EEG) activity examination in predicting the prognosis of preterm infants with brain injury was evaluated using T-test.

Electromagnetic Cellularized Patch with Wirelessly Electrical Stimulation for Promoting Neuronal Differentiation and Spinal Cord Injury Repair.

Although stem cell therapy holds promise for the treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI), its practical applications are limited by the low degree of neural differentiation. Electrical stimulation is one of the most effective ways to promote the differentiation of stem cells into neurons, but conventional wired electrical stimulation may cause secondary injuries, inflammation, pain, and infection. Here, based on the high conductivity of graphite and the electromagnetic induction effect, graphite nanosheets with neural stem cells (NSCs) are proposed as an electromagnetic cellularized patch to gen

Reversibility of Sinus Bradycardia-Induced Syncope Resulting From Low-Voltage Electrical Injury: A Case Report.

Electric shocks pose a serious threat to public health. The heart is among the organs that are most commonly impacted. Electrical harm can cause a number of potentially fatal heart conditions, including asystole, ventricular fibrillation, and myocardial rupture. Some patients had sinus bradycardia diagnosed at the time of admission. In this case report, we describe a 43-year-old male patient who had an electrical injury that resulted in syncope and sinus bradycardia. After 24 hours of cardiac monitoring, the patient was found to not require a pacemaker. This suggests that patients with symptom

Reconstruction of the Upper Extremity High-Voltage Electrical Injury: A Pediatric Burn Hospital's 13-Year Experience.

High-voltage electrical injury is a rare yet destructive class of burn injury that persists as a serious public health issue. High-voltage exposure is commonly associated with complex wounds to the upper extremities, which can be a significant challenge for burn and plastic surgeons to reconstruct. This intensive and multistage reconstructive process is especially difficult in the growing child. Maximizing upper extremity function is a top priority, as it can have a significant impact on a patient's quality of life. Therefore, the purpose of this retrospective review was to describe lessons le

Genomic and Epigenomic Evaluation of Electrically Induced Exercise in People With Spinal Cord Injury: Application to Precision Rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVE: Physical therapists develop patient-centered exercise prescriptions to help overcome the physical, emotional, psychosocial, and environmental stressors that undermine a person's health. Optimally prescribing muscle activity for people with disability, such as a spinal cord injury, is challenging because of their loss of volitional movement control and the deterioration of their underlying skeletal systems. This report summarizes spinal cord injury-specific factors that should be considered in patient-centered, precision prescription of muscle activity for people with spinal cord inj

Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for electrical injury induced cardiogenic shock support: a case report.

BACKGROUND: High voltage electrical injury (HVEI) of more than 1000 V is a potentially devastating form of a multisystem injury associated with high morbidity and mortality. We present the first case of veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) as a life saving device for treating a patient with severe cardiogenic shock after a high voltage electrical injury. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old male sustained HVEI while working with a concrete mixer pump that came in contact with a high voltage cable of 10,000 V. He was immediately disconnected from the mixer pump, underwent ca

Magnetic resonance imaging findings in brain resulting from high-voltage electrical shock injury of the scalp.

We report a case of high-voltage electrical injury to scalp, focusing on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in brain. A 51-year-old male suffered burns to the right side of scalp and loss of consciousness following electric shock. Brain abnormalities were detected on MRI taken 4 days after the insult. Right parietal lobe neuroparenchyma beneath the scalp burn defect demonstrated homogeneous hypointensity on T1-weighted MR images, while T2-weighted images depicted hyperintensity mainly in white matter forming finger-like projections. Follow-up MRI showed that the abnormality had disa

Depolarization and electrical stimulation enhance in vitro and in vivo sensory axon growth after spinal cord injury.

Activity dependent plasticity is a key mechanism for the central nervous system (CNS) to adapt to its environment. Whether neuronal activity also influences axonal regeneration in the injured CNS, and whether electrical stimulation (ES) can activate regenerative programs in the injured CNS remains incompletely understood. Using KCl-induced depolarization, in vivo ES followed by ex-vivo neurite growth assays and ES after spinal cord lesions and cell grafting, we aimed to identify parameters important for ES-enhanced neurite growth and axonal regeneration. Using cultures of sensory neurons, neur

The dynamics of electric powered wheelchair sideways tips and falls: experimental and computational analysis of impact forces and injury.

BACKGROUND: To reduce the occurrence of wheelchair falls and to develop effective protection systems, we aimed to quantify sideways tip and fall dynamics of electric power wheelchairs (EPWs). We hypothesized that driving speed, curb height and angle of approach would affect impact forces and head injury risk for wheelchair riders. We further expected that fall dynamics and head injury risk would be greater for unrestrained riders compared to restrained riders. METHODS: Sideways wheelchair tip and fall dynamics were reconstructed using a remotely operated rear wheel drive EPW and a Hybrid III

Acute effect of electrical stimulation of the dorsal genital nerve on rectal capacity in patients with spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Constipation and fecal incontinence are considerable problems for most individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). Neurogenic bowel symptoms are caused by several factors including abnormal rectal wall properties. Stimulation of the dorsal genital nerve (DGN) can inhibit bladder contractions and because of common innervation inhibitory effects are anticipated in the rectum too. Therefore, DNG could have a future role in the treatment of neurogenic fecal incontinence. AIM: To study the effect of acute DGN stimulation on the rectal cross sectional area (CSA) in SCI patients. Cardiovascular response of individuals with spinal cord injury to dynamic functional electrical stimulation under orthostatic stress.

In this pilot study, we examined how effectively functional electrical stimulation (FES) and passive stepping mitigated orthostatic hypotension in participants with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). While being tilted head-up to 70 (°) from the supine position, the participants underwent four 10-min conditions in a random sequence: 1) no intervention, 2) passive stepping, 3) isometric FES of leg muscles, and 4) FES of leg muscles combined with passive stepping. We found that FES and passive stepping independently mitigated a decrease in stroke volume and helped to maintain the mean blood press
