This study aimed to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the new clinical diagnostic and classification criteria for Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) using six clinical markers: flexion of the distal part of fingers, deformed fingers, enlarged finger joints, shortened fingers, squat down, and dwarfism. One-third of the total population in Linyou County was sampled by stratified random sampling. The survey included baseline characteristics and clinical diagnoses, and the sensitivity and specificity of the new criteria was evaluated. We identified 3,459 KBD patients, of which 69 had early stage

The flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) is the only muscle in the intermediate layer of the flexor compartment of the forearm. Its main function is flexion of the proximal interphalangeal (IP) joint. Variations of the FDS are common, and knowledge of these variations is necessary for hand surgeons because the little finger tendon of the FDS is commonly used in hand reconstruction surgery. Here we present a case of bilateral absence of the little finger tendon of the FDS in an 11-year-old Hispanic female trauma patient presenting to the Emergency Department with multiple traumatic injuries inc

Studies of unilateral finger movement in right-handed subjects have shown asymmetrical patterns of activation in primary motor cortex and subcortical regions. In order to investigate the existence of an analogous pattern during lower limb joints movements, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used. Eighteen healthy, right leg dominant volunteers participated in a motor block design study, performing unilateral right and left repetitive knee, ankle and toes flexion/extension movements. Aiming to relate lower limb joints activation to the well-described patterns of finger movement, s

The extensor apparatus of the fingers is a complex structure. The diagram of the extensor apparatus as seen in figure 1 is in reality not so clearly structured. Closed lesions are the mallet finger, where either an avulsion of the bony insertion of the tendon occurs or where a fracture of the base of the distal phalanx with dislocation of a bone-fragment together with the tendon insertion has happened. Other closed lesions are the closed Boutonnière deformity and the avulsion of a lumbrical muscle. The mallet finger is mostly treated conservatively with a prefabricated splint holding the DIP-j

Two irreducible dislocations of the distal digital interphalangeal joint have been seen by the author. One was dorsally displaced with interposition of the extensor tendon, and the other was a palmar displacement with interposition of the flexor tendon. Both cases were successfully treated by open reduction. A review of the literature confirms the rarity of this condition.

Pain or dysfunction of the finger joints due to arthritis or traumatic injuries that fail medical management may necessitate arthroplasty or joint replacement. The goals of the finger joint implant arthroplasty are to relieve pain, to correct deformity, and to improve the function and appearance of the hand. Several prosthetic implants have been used for the replacement of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint. Pyrocarbon materials, a form of pyrolytic carbon, a ceramic-like material, have proven to be strong, durable, resistant to wear and nonreactive in the body. The Ascension PIP pyrocar

Injuries to the proximal interphalangeal joint are commonly encountered by the hand surgeon. Proper diagnosis and treatment are vital for optimal outcomes. Proper treatment of these injuries requires a working knowledge of the anatomy of the joint and an appreciation for principles for reduction, stabilization, and early rehabilitation to provide the best outcomes possible. Injuries can include fractures of the head of the proximal phalanx, dislocations, fracture dislocations, and fractures of the base of the middle phalanx. Similar to other aspects of plastic surgery, there is little high-lev

This paper stresses the importance of central slip attenuation in the management of Dupuytren's contracture. Such attenuation occurs in patients who have had prolonged proximal interphalangeal joint contractures and is a common problem when the flexion contracture exceeds 60 degrees. The diagnosis can be made at the time of surgical correction by a tenodesis test. If central slip attenuation is confirmed, the postoperative regime described here will give a better correction of what at first might appear to be an intractable proximal interphalangeal joint flexion deformity.

Degenerative arthritis of the finger metacarpophalangeal joints is uncommon and, when seen, a specific etiology should be sought. MP joint arthritis in the absence of a history of trauma may signal an underlying systemic disease. The clinical and radiographic findings may be subtle. Once degenerative changes occur, the usual treatment is arthroplasty using a flexible silicone rubber (Swanson) finger joint implant that should provide a relatively stable and painless joint with a functional range of motion. Degenerative arthritis of the thumb MP joint is more common following injuries that damag

A 59-year-old man suffered from subcutaneous rupture of the flexor tendon of the little finger associated with fracture of the hook of hamate. He could not flex his little finger completely at the distal interphalangeal joint, but incomplete flexion of the proximal interphalangeal joint was possible. Surgical exploration revealed anomaly of the flexor digitorum superficialis of the little finger, as it originated from the palmar aspect of the carpal ligament, and a small portion of the muscle belly was traversed toward the A1 pulley over the profundus tendon and then it ran into the A1 pulley

BACKGROUND: Repetitive flexion and extension movements of the metacarpophalangeal (MP) joint can be a factor in the development of trigger finger because of the shear stress that occurs on the tendons and annular ligaments. Understanding the role of joint movement is crucial for gaining insight into how humans may prevent musculoskeletal disorders and related symptoms.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the coordination of wrist and metacarpophalangeal (MP) joint movements during the execution of a standardized typing task in the sagittal and frontal/sideways planes.

Fractures of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint with fragment displacement should be promptly repaired after injury, though this does not ensure the return of pre-injury finger function. This article presents the case of a 29-year-old patient who sustained an injury to the fourth finger of his right hand, resulting in an open fracture of the distal and shaft of the proximal phalanx involving the PIP joint and partial damage to the finger extensor mechanism. Immediately post injury, the fracture was realigned and stabilized with Kirschner wires (K-wires). Three years later, due to post-tr

OBJECTIVE: Approximately 25% of individualsliving with parkinsonian tremor do not respond to traditional treatments. Wearable tremor suppression devices (WTSD) provide an alternative approach, however, tremor in the fingers has not been given as much attention as tremor in the elbow and the wrist. Therefore, the objective of this study is to design a wearable tremor suppression glove that can suppress tremor simultaneously, but independently, in multiple hand joints without restricting the user's voluntary motion.
METHODS: A WTSD was designed for managing tremor in the index finger metacarpop

Between April 1994 and May 1998, 15 amputated index fingers were treated based on three classifications: group 1 consisted of patients with index finger defects immediately proximal to, yet including, the distal interphalangeal joint, group 2 were those patients with defects from the proximal part of the distal interphalangeal joint to the distal part of the proximal interphalangeal joint and group 3 comprised patients with more proximal defects than group 2. With a total of six men and nine women, seven cases were included in group 1, five in group 2 and three in group 3. For the patients in

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular fractures of the fingers are common problems to emergency physicians and hand surgeons. Inappropriate management of these injuries may result in chronic pain, stiffness, deformity, or post traumatic arthritis. Ideal treatment necessitates the restoration of a stable and congruent joint that will allow early mobilization. The purpose of this study was to investigate the results of intra-articular fracture of the fingers by mini external fixator combined with limited internal fixation.
METHODS: From May 2005 to May 2007, a total of 26 patients with intra-articular fr

The psychoflexed hand is a rare clinical condition characterized by fixed finger contractures undetermined by organic etiology, often associated with a psychiatric pathology. We report a series of 20 patients (nine males and 11 females, mean aged 56.2 years). We have introduced a new classification of the various possible patterns of finger deformities: 1) Type 1: prevalent flexion contracture at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints of the last two or three fingers; the thumb and the index are not affected; 2) type 2: prevalent flexion contracture at the PIP

OBJECTIVES: Locomotive syndrome (LS) leads to reduced physical function and a high risk of becoming bedridden. Grip strength serves as an indicator of upper limb and overall physical function. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with reduced grip strength frequently show finger and wrist joint inflammation. The purpose of this study was to verify grip strength as an evaluation tool for physical function and LS in RA patients.
METHODS: As part of an ongoing multicenter observational study, 591 consecutive RA patients whose background information was available, including data for the 25-question

Swanson's finger implant is being widely used to improve deformity of the thumb and finger and to restore function in the rheumatoid hand. Breakage of the implant and implant synovitis have been the most troublesome complications. The authors developed an alumina ceramic finger prosthesis to lessen these complications. This prosthesis was used for the metacarpophalangeal joint in 5 cases of flexion deformity of the thumb and in 21 cases (82 digits) with ulnar drift deformity. These cases were followed for 24-62 months (average, 38 months). Postoperative extension of the thumb was limited to 18
