[Hyperhomocysteinaemia in a coeliac disease heterozygote for the two common mutations (677C->T and 1298A->C) of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene. Case report].

A 17 year old girl with coeliac disease was found to have hyperhomocysteinaemia (fasting plasma total homocysteine concentration - 19.93 micromol/L; N<12.75 micromol/L). At the age of 1 5 she gave up gluten-free diet and had only subtle signs of chronic malabsorption such as folic acid and iron deficiency. The patient was heterozygote for both common mutations (677C->T and J298A->C) of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene. On gluten diet an intake of 5 mg folic acid/d from supplements for two weeks resulted in an increase in serum folate and a reduction in homocysteine concentration (1

Anemia and hematinic deficiencies in anti-gastric parietal cell antibody-positive or all autoantibodies-negative recurrent aphthous stomatitis patients.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Approximately 13% of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) patients have serum anti-gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity. This study assessed whether serum GPCA or RAS itself was a significant factor causing hematinic deficiencies and anemia statuses in GPCA-positive RAS (GPCA+/RAS) and all autoantibodies-negative RAS (Abs-/RAS) patients. METHODS: The mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean blood hemoglobin (Hb), iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid levels were measured and compared between any two of three groups of 31 GPCA+/RAS patients, 240 Abs-/RAS patients, and

Concomitant occurrence of Wernicke's encephalopathy and sarcopenia due to vitamin D depletion in patients with alcohol use disorder: a case report.

Individuals with alcohol use disorder frequently suffer from vitamin D deficiency, in addition to deficiencies in vitamins B12, folic acid and B1. This is due to inadequate dietary intake and behavioural changes. Each of these deficiencies results in different clinical symptoms. Subacute spinal cord degeneration, together with radicular and sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy, arises from B12 vitamin and folic acid deficiencies. B1 vitamin deficiency leads to Wernicke's encephalopathy, which can include the classical triad of symptoms (i.e. cognitive changes, ataxia and ophthalmoplegia). Sarcop

Prevalence of multiple micronutrient deficiencies amongst pregnant women in a rural area of Haryana.

UNLABELLED: Deficiencies of micronutrients (zinc, iron, folic acid and iodine) during pregnancy are known causes of Low Birth Weight (LBW). Studies have documented status of one or two micronutrients amongst pregnant women (PW). However, no attempt has been made to concurrently assess the prevalence of multiple micronutrient deficiencies and the factors associated with them amongst PW. OBJECTIVE: The present study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of multiple micronutrient deficiencies amongst PW in a rural area. METHODS: A community based cross sectional survey was conducted in six vi

Maternal micronutrients and omega 3 fatty acids affect placental fatty acid desaturases and transport proteins in Wistar rats.

Adequate supply of LCPUFA from maternal plasma is crucial for fetal normal growth and development. The present study examines the effect of maternal micronutrients (folic acid and vitamin B12) and omega 3 fatty acids on placental mRNA levels of fatty acid desaturases (Δ5 and Δ6) and transport proteins. Pregnant female rats were divided into 6 groups at 2 levels of folic acid both in the presence and absence of vitamin B12. Both the vitamin B12 deficient groups were supplemented with omega 3 fatty acid. Maternal vitamin B12 deficiency reduced placental mRNA and protein levels of Δ5 desaturase,

Determination of Folic Acid Using Biosensors-A Short Review of Recent Progress.

Folic acid (FA) is the synthetic surrogate of the essential B vitamin folate, alternatively named folacin, pteroylglutamic acid or vitamin B9. FA is an electroactive compound that helps our body to create and keep our cells healthy: it acts as the main character in a variety of synthetic biological reactions such as the synthesis of purines, pyrimidine (thus being indirectly implied in DNA synthesis), fixing and methylation of DNA. Therefore, physiological folate deficiency may be responsible for severe degenerative conditions, including neural tube defects in developing embryos and megaloblas

Folate deprivation, the methionine cycle, and Alzheimer's disease.

Folate deficiency is associated with increase in homocysteine levels. Abnormal plasma levels of that neurotoxic nonproteinogenic amino acid is implicated in many pathological conditions including cardiovascular diseases, neural tube defects, and is now recognized as a risk factor in Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. Homocysteine elimination is regulated by two metabolic pathways, namely, the transmethylation and the transsulfuration pathways. Its elimination via these two metabolic pathways is modulated by folate, a member of the B-vitamin family. Folate provides, via its metabolic end produc

Dietary folate deficiency with normal red cell folate and circulating blasts.

This report describes a 26 year old woman, of Pakistani origin, who presented five months postpartum with severe megaloblastic anaemia as a result of nutritional folate deficiency. This case was unusual in that a small number of myeloblasts were present in the peripheral blood at presentation, and this circulating population temporarily increased in size when folate replacement was begun. We also highlight the need to recognise the non-linear relation between haematocrit and red blood cell folate concentration when the haematocrit is very low (< 0.15) and emphasise the importance of the clinic

Dietary folate requirement determined for channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus.

Juvenile channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, were fed semipurified basal diets containing 0, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 4.0 or 10.0 mg/kg of folic acid or 10 g/kg of succinylsulfathiazole in aquaria for 15 wk. Fish fed the sulfonamide showed higher mortality, lower weight gain, lower thrombocyte counts, higher hemocytoblast and neutrophil counts, and lower liver folate concentrations than did control fish (0 folic acid), indicating that significant intestinal bacterial synthesis of folate occurs in channel catfish. There were positive quadratic regressions of weight gain, hematocrit, erythrocyte and leu

Different dietary combinations of folic acid and vitamin B12 in parental diet results in epigenetic reprogramming of IGF2R and KCNQ1OT1 in placenta and fetal tissues in mice.

Genomic imprinting is important for mammalian development and its dysregulation can cause various developmental defects and diseases. The study evaluated the effects of different dietary combinations of folic acid and B12 on epigenetic regulation of IGF2R and KCNQ1OT1 ncRNA in C57BL/6 mice model. Female mice were fed diets with nine combinations of folic acid and B12 for 4 weeks. They were mated and off-springs born (F1) were continued on the same diet for 6 weeks postweaning and were allowed to mate. The placenta and fetal (F2) tissues were collected at day 20 of gestation. Dietary deficiency

[Metabolic disorders in hereditary optic neuropathies].

UNLABELLED: Folate metabolism disorders are known to have a potential involvement in the pathophysiology of mitochondrial diseases. Many researchers suggest that profound systemic folate deficiency may contribute to mitochondrial folate deficiency. Folic acid metabolism is closely related to vitamin B12 and homocysteine. Considering that hereditary optic neuropathies (HON) are mitochondrial diseases, it is important to study the folate status, the content of vitamin B12 and homocysteine in patients with this pathology. OBJECTIVE: To compare the content of folic acid, vitamin B12 and homocyste

Medicines associated with folate-homocysteine-methionine pathway disruption.

Folate is vital for cell development and growth. It is involved in one-carbon transfer reactions essential for the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines. It also acts in conjunction with cobalamin (vitamin B12) as a fundamental cofactor in the remethylation cycle that converts homocysteine to methionine. A deficiency in folate or vitamin B12 can lead to elevated homocysteine level, which has been identified as an independent risk factor in several health-related conditions. Adequate folate levels are essential in women of childbearing age and in pregnant women, and folate deficiency is associat

Folate deficiency in women with epilepsy: a scoping review.

Folate deficiency is associated with increased risks of adverse maternal and offspring health outcomes. This review aimed to review the available evidence on folate deficiency among women with epilepsy, particularly potential causes and identified predictors of inadequate folic acid (FA) supplement use. We conducted this review using the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews. We searched Medline, Embase, EBM reviews and all Ovid journals for studies reporting on folate status/FA use in women with epilepsy. Of 3778 items reviewed, 105 relevant articles were identified and included. Many reports
