Intramedullary versus plate fixation of both bone forearm fractures in skeletally immature patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Both bone forearm fractures (BBFFs) are a common injury amongst the pediatric population. The main indications of surgical fixation are open, irreducible, or unstable fractures. The two most commonly used surgical techniques are closed or open reduction with intramedullary fixation (IMF) and open reduction with plate fixation (PF). The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine which fixation method is superior for BBFFs. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and CENTRAL were searched to identify studies comparing IMF and PF. We extracted data on union rat

Short-Term Outcomes of Jones-Specific Implant Versus Intramedullary Screw and Plate Fixation for Proximal Fifth Metatarsal Fractures.

Although intramedullary screw fixation is commonly performed for proximal fifth metatarsal fractures, high rates of nonunion, refracture, and hardware prominence have been reported. The Jones Specific Implant (JSI) is a novel surgical implant which contours to the native curvature of the fifth metatarsal allowing for a more anatomic fixation. The purpose of this study was to compare short-term complication rates and outcomes of patients treated with the JSI to other fixation types such as plates and intramedullary screws. Electronic records were queried for adult patients with proximal fifth m

The lesser trochanter "Sling fixation technique" in proximal intramedullary nailing of unstable intertrochanteric fractures: A polymer-based cerclage wiring.

INTRODUCTION: Lesser trochanter (LT) fixation to restore the continuity of the posteromedial fragment using a cerclage wire has been reported to provide a more stable reduction in the treatment of unstable femoral neck fractures with LT involvement. However, LT fixation is not commonly performed due to the complications associated with the traditional monofilament cerclage metal wires. In this study, we investigate the clinical and radiological outcomes of a new technique for LT fixation in conjunction with Intramedullary (IM) fixation with nail and screws when compared to isolated IM fixation

Comparison of intramedullary nailing and plate fixation in distal tibial fractures with metaphyseal damage: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Distal metadiaphyseal tibial fractures are commonly seen lower limb fractures. Intramedullary nail fixation (IMN) and plate internal fixation (PL) are the two mainstay treatments for tibial fractures, but agreement on the best internal fixation for distal tibial fractures is still controversial. This meta-analysis was designed to compare the success of IMN and PL fixations in the treatment of distal metadiaphyseal tibial fractures, in terms of complications and functional recovery. METHODS: A systematic research of the literature was conducted to identify relevant articles that we

External Fixation versus Unreamed Tibial Intramedullary Nailing for Open Tibial Fractures: A Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Controversy exists over whether the use of external fixation (EF) or unreamed tibial intramedullary nailing (UTN) is optimal for the treatment of open tibial fractures. The aim of this study was to compare clinical outcomes in terms of postoperative superficial and deep infection, malunion, delayed union, nonunion and hardware failure between these two treatment methods. So a systematic review and meta-analysis was performed. All available randomized controlled trials that compared the clinical results of EF to those of UTN were obtained and the reported numbers of citations for each observed

The biomechanical performance of locking plate fixation with intramedullary fibular strut graft augmentation in the treatment of unstable fractures of the proximal humerus.

We evaluated the biomechanical properties of two different methods of fixation for unstable fractures of the proximal humerus. Biomechanical testing of the two groups, locking plate alone (LP), and locking plate with a fibular strut graft (LPSG), was performed using seven pairs of human cadaveric humeri. Cyclical loads between 10 N and 80 N at 5 Hz were applied for 1,000,000 cycles. Immediately after cycling, an increasing axial load was applied at a rate of displacement of 5 mm/min. The displacement of the construct, maximum failure load, stiffness and mode of failure were compared. The displ

Ipsilateral distal third femoral shaft fracture and retrograde intramedullary fixation are not absolute contraindications to anterolateral thigh flap harvest: A case report.

Despite the advantages of anterolateral thigh (ALT) flaps, many surgeons are hesitant to choose a thigh with ipsilateral femoral fracture and internal fixation as the flap donor site. To cover the right mid-upper leg wound, a free ALT flap was harvested from the left thigh of a 55-year-old man who initially underwent closed retrograde intramedullary fixation for a left distal third femoral shaft fracture. The flap was based on a musculocutaneous perforator located in the mid-thigh, which was approximately 10 cm above the proximal fracture level. No adhesion or scar formation between the fascia

Stability of Distal Ulnar Neck Fractures During Cyclic Loading Following Intramedullary Threaded Nail Fixation or Volar-Locking Plate and Screw Fixation: A Cadaveric Biomechanical Comparison.

PURPOSE: This study compared cadaveric distal ulnar neck fractures following fixation with either retrograde intramedullary threaded nail (IMTN) fixation or volar-locked plate and screw (VLPS) fixation. We hypothesized that there would be no differences in fatigue resistance between the two methods. METHODS: Twelve matched pairs of cadaveric forearms were randomized into either wrist flexion-extension or forearm pronation-supination groups. In each group, six forearm pairs were cut at the distal ulnar neck. One was fixed with IMTN fixation, and their matched pair was fixed with VLPS fixation.
