Histological and ultrastructural findings on mucocele of maxillary sinus.

The authors describe a rare case of mucocele of maxillary sinus and, on the basis of the histological and namely of the ultrastructural findings, they maintain that the mucocele has in all probability a multiple pathogenesis being dependent not only on the inflammatory processes, but also on other local predisposing factors and namely the active participation of the mucosa in the formation of the cavity of mucocele.

Gliosarcoma with cranial penetration and extension to the maxillary sinus.

A 70 year old woman underwent an anterior rightsided temporal lobectomy for a mixed glioblastoma-fibrosarcoma. Six months later, she presented with rightsided zygomatic and maxillary swellings, associated with rightsided ptosis, chemosis, and nerve palsies of the III, IV, VI, and VII cranial nerves. A computerized scan (CT) of the head revealed tumor erosion of the skull base of the right middle fossa with extension into the maxillary sinus. This was confirmed at surgery. Pathologic examination revealed a predominantly small cell anaplastic glioblastoma associated with sarcoma elements, simila…

Maxillary sinus mucocele. Report of an unusual case.

The maxillary sinus mucocele occupying the entire sinus is rarely reported by dentists. This article discusses one such case diagnosed as an exceptionally large maxillary sinus cyst occupying the whole sinus. Unlike their findings in the medical literature, the authors were unable to find many similar cases reported in the dental literature. The location of these mucoceles necessitates the use of diagnostic radiographs, especially those of the panoramic type. Because etiology is still not fully understood after almost 100 years, the authors suggest and discuss four possible mechanisms of sinus…

[Giant mucocele of the maxillary sinus. Apropos of a case].

A young woman presented with a very large primary mucocele of the right maxillary sinus having a tumoral appearance as it had destroyed the bony walls of the sinus. The various proposed etiopathogenic theories fort these mucoceles are discussed, emphasis being placed mainly on their possible inflammatory origin. The contribution of computed tomography for differential diagnosis is stressed, the quality of the images obtained and the data supplied being of invaluable assistance.

[Roentgen diagnosis of mucosal cysts of the maxillary sinus].

The most common cystic lesion of the maxillary sinuses is the mucosal cyst. In reviewing a 5-years material of 5026 pathological X-ray examinations of the sinuses 12.2% of these were found to have mucosal cysts. These cysts usually do not give rise to symptoms and require no treatment, but are often erroneously diagnosed as polyps, compact maxillary sinuses, hypertrophy of the lining mucosa or tumors. As radiologic examination of the sinuses is a common procedure and the diagnosis of a mucosal cyst is possible other diagnoses may not be given in most cases.

Epidemiologic patterns of frontal and maxillary sinus cancer.

A significant disease in mortality rates for maxillary and frontal sinus cancer was found for older females, particularly in urban areas of New York State, over a 30-year period. A similar observation was made for males residing in rural areas. The decline in female rates might be related to the discontinued use of carcinogenic agents such as Thorotrast, whereas that in males might be related to changes in those industries associated with an increased risk for these cancer sites.

Maxillary Sinus Mucocele following Zygomaticomaxillary Complex Fracture Repair.

Maxillary sinus cysts typically occur as postoperative maxillary cysts arising years after sinonasal surgery. In contrast, trauma-related cysts are uncommon, and cases specifically following zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture repair are exceedingly rare. We report a maxillary sinus cyst that developed 28 years after open reduction and internal fixation of a zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture. At the initial injury, the orbital floor fracture remained untreated, and the posterior maxillary wall was displaced anteriorly. These structures likely contacted each other and formed a bony partitio…

Evaluations of maxillary sinus pathologies using CBCT imaging.

The detection of maxillary sinus pathologies is often challenging due to their asymptomatic nature and the limitations of conventional imaging techniques. Therefore, it is of interest to use cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to examine maxillary sinus issues. They reviewed 120 CBCT scans to identify both disease and anatomical differences. Mucosal thickening was the most common finding, followed by sinus opacification and retention cysts. These issues appeared more often in older patients. Thus, CBCT proved to be a reliable way to detect sinus problems and can support better clinical decisi…

Relationship between midfacial fractures and maxillary sinus pathology.

BACKGROUND: Midfacial fractures frequently involve the maxillary sinus, leading to maxillary sinus pathology. We aimed to examine the incidence and contributing factors of maxillary sinus pathology in patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for midfacial fractures. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who underwent ORIF for midfacial fractures at our department over the past 10 years. The incidence of maxillary sinus pathology was identified clinically and/or by computed tomography findings. Factors that significantly influenced the groups wit…

Maxillary sinus aeration analysis using computational fluid dynamics.

The maxillary sinus aeration using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method based on individual adult patients' computed tomography (CT) scans were analyzed. The analysis was based on CT images of 4 patients: one with normal nose anatomy and three with nasal septal deviation (NSD) and concha bullosa (CB). The CFD simulation was performed using the Reynolds-Average Simulation approach and turbulence closure based on linear eddy viscosity supplemented with the two-equation k-[Formula: see text] SST model. As a result, it was found that the lower part of NSD has the most significant impact o…
