Adenosine deaminase activity in sera of patients with visceral leishmaniasis in Nepal.

This longitudinal study was conducted in BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), a Medical University situated in eastern Nepal, between May 2001 and December 2001. The main objective of the study was to identify the role of adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity in patients with visceral leishmaniasis (VL) for management. There was a significant increase in mean ADA activity in sera of 49 patients with VL (323.71+/-184.51 IU/L) compared with 50 samples of control groups (47.11+/-24.94 IU/L) from the same endemic area (P < 0.001). ADA activities were found to be significantly decreased (…

The sensitivity of clinical isolates of Leishmania from Peru and Nepal to miltefosine.

Clinical isolates of Leishmania, from visceral leishmaniasis (VL) cases in Nepal and from cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) cases in Peru, were cultured using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) to type species and strain. Promastigotes from 38 isolates, within eight passages from isolation, were used to infect mouse peritoneal macrophage cultures in vitro, and the amastigote sensitivity to miltefosine was determined. The concentration required to kill 50% of intracellular amastigotes from Nepalese VL isolates, all typed as Leishmania (L.) donovani (N = 24)…

Prevalence of Shigella species and their antimicrobial resistance patterns in Eastern Nepal.

The study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Shigella species and their antimicrobial resistance patterns in eastern Nepal. Stool samples submitted to the diagnostic laboratory of B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Nepal, during August 2000-July 2004, were cultured for Shigella species and were confirmed by biochemical and serological tests. Of 53 Shigella species isolated, Shigella dysenteriae type 1 was the most predominant isolate (73.7%), followed by S. flexneri (23%) and S. boydii (4%). The majority (79%) of Shigella species were isolated from children aged less than fiv…

Impact of snake bites and determinants of fatal outcomes in southeastern Nepal.

Current available data on snake bites in Nepal are based solely on hospital statistics. This community-based study aimed at evaluating the impact of snake bites and determining the risk factors associated with a fatal outcome in southeastern Nepal. A total of 1,817 households, selected by a random proportionate sampling method, were visited by trained field workers in five villages. Extensive data from snake bite victims during the 14 previous months were recorded and analyzed. One hundred forty-three snake bites including 75 bites with signs of envenoming were reported (annual incidence = 1,1…

Clinical and hematological findings on "Degnala", a disease of buffalo in Eastern Nepal.

A buffalo disease, called "Degnala", causing lameness, edema, gangrenous ulceration of hooves or tail, emaciation, recumbency and eventual death, occurs in Eastern Nepal. Clinical examinations manifested lice eggs on hairs, bradycardia, hypothermia, dehydration, exanthema and icterus. Hematologically, increase of band neutrophil, giant platelet, hypoalbuminemia and hyperglobulinemia were characteristics. Microscopically, dark blue tiny particles were seen on red blood cell (RBC) after Giemsa staining. Administration of tetracycline at an early stage of the disease was effective.

Comparison of two azithromycin distribution strategies for controlling trachoma in Nepal.

OBJECTIVE: The study compares the effectiveness of two strategies for distributing azithromycin in an area with mild-to-moderate active trachoma in Nepal. METHODS: The two strategies investigated were the use of azithromycin for 1) mass treatment of all children, or 2) targeted treatment of only those children who were found to be clinically active, as well as all members of their household. FINDINGS: Mass treatment of children was slightly more effective in terms of decreasing the prevalence of clinically active trachoma (estimated by clinical examination) and of chlamydial infection (estim…

Molecular analysis of alpha-thalassemia in Nepal: correlation with malaria endemicity.

Thalassemia is a prevalent hereditary disorder characterized by impaired synthesis of globin chains. It has been suggested that the high frequency of thalassemia might reflect heterozygote advantage due to reduced susceptibility to malaria. In Nepal, malaria has often occurred in places below the altitude of 1,200m. We carried out a microepidemiological study on thalassemia in two neighboring populations in Nepal, the Danuwar and the Tamang. Settlements of the Danuwar are located below the limit of the malarial zone (1,200m in altitude), whereas those of the Tamang are found in malaria-free up…

Ocular impairments in an impairment survey of leprosy-affected persons in Nepal.

An impairment survey was carried out in Nepal. The study subjects (n = 318) were a mixture of out-patients and patients admitted less than one month before the survey. Of the subjects, 101 were attending the hospital out-patients clinic or were admitted and the rest were examined in the field. The patients studied included those on MDT and care-after-cure cases. Ocular impairments were found in 25% of these cases. The most common ocular impairment was poor vision followed by lagophthalmos and insensitive cornea.

Night blindness of pregnancy in rural Nepal--nutritional and health risks.

BACKGROUND: Night blindness (XN) is the most common clinical symptom of vitamin A deficiency among children in developing countries. Yet little is known about the aetiology or associated risks of maternal XN. Emerging evidence from South East Asia suggests that it may be more frequent than previously thought in women of reproductive age, especially during pregnancy. METHODS: A population-based, case-control study was conducted to reveal the epidemiology of XN among pregnant Nepali women. Night blind cases were identified by history through a weekly community surveillance system. Controls were…

Serological and virological studies of Japanese encephalitis in the Terai region of Nepal.

In 1987 and 1990, serum samples were collected from people living in the two districts (Itahari and Chitwan) of the Terai region of Nepal. Antibodies against Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus in these sera were detected by the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) and neutralization (N) tests. By the HI test, 26 out of 172 (15.1%) sera from Chitwan and 15 out of 137 (10.9%) sera from Itahari showed positive titers. Higher positive rates were shown by the N test, where 46 out of 172 (26.7%) sera from Chitwan and 22 out of 137 (16.1%) sera from Itahari had antibodies against JE virus. A JE strain was …

Micronutrients deficiencies and its correlation with the soil-transmitted helminthic infections among children and non-pregnant women in Nepal: findings from Nepal national micronutrient status survey.

Despite having a high risk of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) infection, no national level study has been conducted to assess incidence and correlates of STHs in Nepal. Thus, we hypothesized that micronutrients and social status are linked with incidence of STHs infection among 6-59 months children and 15-49 years non-pregnant women in Nepal and Kato-Katz technique was adopted to measure the type and intensity of STHs infections using fresh stool specimens and venous blood was used to examine micronutrients biomarkers. Anthropometric measurements such as height and weight, sociodemographic a…

Nepal's vulnerability to Nipah virus transmission: an urgent call for preparedness.

The confirmation of two Nipah virus (NiV) infections among healthcare workers in West Bengal, India, in December 2025 highlights the ongoing regional threat of this highly contagious zoonotic pathogen and the risk of nosocomial transmission before clinical suspicion. Increasing reports of human-to-human transmission in South Asia call for stronger preparedness efforts in neighboring countries. Nepal is particularly vulnerable due to its open border with India, high population mobility, ecological suitability for Petropus bat reservoirs, mixed livestock farming, limited surveillance, and diagno…

Implantation mycoses: A nationwide survey on diagnostic and treatment modalities in Nepal.

Implantation mycoses (IM) are a group of fungal diseases which occur after a transcutaneous trauma. The World Health Organization has listed some of the IM, namely sporotrichosis, chromoblastomycosis and eumycetoma as one of the Skin Neglected Tropical Diseases targeted for control by 2030. There are no robust data on IM from Nepal since these diseases are not a part of routine disease surveillance. In this study, an online and in-person survey was conducted using a standard set of questionnaires among the registered dermatologists of Nepal. For this survey sporotrichosis, chromoblastomycosis …

Prevalence and Determinants of Anemia among Adolescent Girls in Rural Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a period of rapid growth and increased nutritional requirements, making girls in low- and middle-income countries, such as Nepal, vulnerable to iron deficiency anemia. In rural areas of Nepal, menstrual blood loss, poor diet, and socio-cultural barriers all increase this risk. Despite national programs, anemia remains a major public health concern, affecting cognition, immunity, and future reproductive health. This study assessed the prevalence and determinants of nutritional status, including anemia, in adolescent girls. METHODS: A cross-sectional school-based stud…

Screening and Management of Perinatal Depression in Nepal: The Need for Urgent Action.

Perinatal depression is one of the most neglected public health concerns among reproductive-age women in resource-limited countries, such as Nepal. Currently, there is a lack of standardized protocols to screen and treat women for depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period in Nepal. Additionally, healthcare providers are often not adequately trained to identify and treat perinatal depression. This, coupled with the stigma related to mental health issues and a lack of community resources, can delay the identification and treatment of perinatal depression among women. The purpose of t…
