In-hospital formula supplementation of healthy breastfeeding newborns.

The UNICEF/WHO Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative suggests that breastfeeding activities in hospital are important to later breastfeeding. Understanding reasons for in-hospital supplementation may help to optimize the successful implementation of this initiative. The objective was to identify predictors of in-hospital initial formula supplementation of healthy, breastfeeding newborns. The authors analyzed 564 Canadian mother-infant pairs and interviewed nurses. Half of the study infants (47.9%) received formula in hospital; the median age at first supplementation was 8.4 hours. Risk for supplem

[What do medical students know about cause and epidemiology of the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in Germany?].

Due to the increase of patients with the variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in Great Britain and the first cases of autochthonous BSE cases in Germany, the study tried to investigate the knowledge of medical students about the epidemiology of CJD in Germany and how they assess the influence of different factors on the etiology of CJD. Altogether 63 first year medical students, 96 third year medical students and 50 nurses were included in an anonymous questionnaire survey. They were asked to estimate the annually incidence of CJD in Germany and to assess, by using analogue-scales, the inf

Relationship between sleep-wake patterns, occupational stress and sickness absence among nurses.

UNLABELLED: Individual sleep-wake characteristics play an important role in daily functioning and adaptation to shift work. They are associated with alertness, sleep quality, cognitive performance, concentration, and the ability to cope with occupational demands. High levels of occupational stress and chronic fatigue have also been identified as factors associated with sickness absence among nursing staff. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between sleep-wake characteristics, occupational stress, and the use of sick leave in a group of practicing nurses. PARTICIPA

Association between chronic pain and mental health among nurses in China: a national cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Due to high intensity, workloads and shift work, nurses have become a high prevalence group of pain. If not promptly intervened, pain may become chronic pain through the mechanisms of peripheral sensitization and central sensitization, which in turn induces psychological symptoms such as anxiety and depression, forming a vicious circle of "pain-mental health comorbidity". In addition, long-term pain may accelerate the transition from acute pain to chronic pain, which will cause more serious damage to nurses' health. However, few studies have deeply explored the association between

Legal and ethical issues in neonatal nursing: a case study.

Neonatal nurses regularly face complex legal and ethical dilemmas. This article discusses the hypothetical case of Jack, a two-day-old infant diagnosed with trisomy 13 (syndrome), a life-limiting condition. Jack's prognosis is poor, and he is not expected to live past two weeks of age. The legal and ethical perspectives of withholding life-sustaining treatment in infants and children will be explored through the application of ethical frameworks, as well as statute and case law relevant to children and adolescent nursing. The article also discusses the neonatal nurse's role, with reference to

An observational study of associations between nurse behaviour and violence in psychiatric hospitals.

A cyclical model of violence to psychiatric nurses is proposed in this paper and a partial test of the model is reported. The model suggests that stress induced by exposure to violence leads to impaired staff performance and adoption of behaviours which make the re-occurrence of violence more likely. We tested the proposal that certain staff behaviours (e.g. expressing verbal hostility) are associated with an increased risk of assault by observing nurse-patient interaction on 12 psychiatric wards (n = 103 nurses). The verbal and physical interaction of (1) assaulted staff, (2) staff on violent

Latent profile analysis and predictive factors of learned helplessness among nursing students in clinical practice.

Existing research on learned helplessness among nursing interns often overlooks group heterogeneity and fails to explore its relationships with the clinical learning environment and self-esteem. A convenience sample of 381 nursing interns completed standardized questionnaires assessing their demographic characteristics, learned helplessness, clinical learning environment, and self-esteem. Latent profile analysis revealed three distinct profiles of learned helplessness among the nursing interns: "Low Helplessness-Low Hopelessness" (n = 127, 33.3%), "High Helplessness-Low Hopelessness" (n = 172,
