The authors analyzed 25 paraffin-embedded lung biopsy specimens for mycobacterial DNA by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from patients with pulmonary mycobacterial infection demonstrated by acid-fast stain, culture, or both. A case of lipoid pneumonia following occupational exposure to oil spray is described. Biological fluids (broncho-alveolar lavage and pleural fluid) are analyzed to determine if the compounds found in the industrial oils are present. The samples are purified using high-performance thin-layer chromatography, and after extraction, the compounds were submitted to infrared spectroscopy. Direct hexane extraction of biological fluids is also performed, followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).

Twenty-two skin biopsies have been split and each half examined either by the immunoperoxidase technique on paraffin-fixed tissue or by both immunoperoxidase (IP) and immunofluorescence (IF) technique on snap-frozen tissue. This case report describes a case of exogenous lipoid pneumonia (ELP) due to medical aspiration of paraffin oil. An 87-year-old male was hospitalized with bedridden, dysphagic dysphagia.
