Langerhans cells: structure, function and role in oral pathological conditions.

Langerhans cells (LCs) are dendritic bone marrow derived cells situated suprabasally in most stratified squamous epithelia, such as the epidermis and the epithelium of oral mucosa, including the gingiva. Langerhans cells are thought to act as antigen-presenting cells (APC) during induction of immune responses. The exact role of Langerhans cells in the oral mucosa is not fully understood although several investigations suggest that these cells are involved in reactions to antigen challenge under both normal and pathological situations. In this paper the structure, phenotypic markers and derivat

Gingival odontogenic keratocyst presenting as pseudoinfection: Inclusion of demonstrative case report and review.

BACKGROUND: The peripheral odontogenic keratocyst (POKC) is a rare developmental odontogenic cyst and represents the soft tissue counterpart of the more common intraosseous variant. Although the majority of POKCs have been discovered on the gingiva, scant information is available in the periodontal literature. METHODS: A 69-year-old man presented with a painless, red fluctuant-like papular lesion on the maxillary anterior labial gingiva. The adjacent teeth had vital pulpal responses and normal gingival probing depths. A subtle radiolucency with corticated borders was evident overlying the api

Assessment of Stem Cell Transplant Eligibility in Recipients with Oral Foci of Infection: Appropriate Conditioning Regimens.

OBJECTIVES: It is unclear whether patients with oral foci of infection should be approved for hematopoietic stem cell transplant with or without posttransplant cyclophosphamide. We compared the presence of oral foci of infection status on the effects of various conditioning regimens for such patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three groups were classified as autologous (carmustine-etoposide-cytarabinemelphalan, mitoxantrone-melphalan, and melphalan 200 mg/m² groups; n = 502 patients), and 6 groups were classified as allogeneic (busulfan-fludarabinerabbit anti-T-lymphocyte globulin, busulfanfluda

Identification of GM3 as a marker of therapy-resistant periradicular lesions.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the profile of glycosphingolipids (GSLs) in periradicular lesions refractory to endodontic treatment. Sixteen periapical lesions were removed surgically from patients (experimental group) and compared with 10 samples of periodontal ligament removed from extracted intact third molars (control group). After the GSLs extraction and purification procedures were performed the neutral and acidic GSL fractions were analyzed by high-performance thin-layer chromatography and quantified by densitometry. Data reported herein show that: (i) tissues in the experimen

Spontaneous early exposure of submerged implants: III. Histopathology of perforated mucosa covering submerged implants.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous early exposure of dental implants could interfere with the early healing phase of dental implants. These exposures have been clinically classified according to degree of implant exposure from 0 (intact mucosa) to IV (complete exposure). The characteristics of perforated mucosa (Class I and II) covering submerged dental implants were examined histologically in this study. METHODS: Biopsy specimens of 34 Class I and II perforated mucosa covering submerged dental implants were examined histologically. Serial sections were evaluated from the periphery of the specimen to th

Complications of sinus perforations and their management in endodontics.

The intimate position of the maxillary sinus to the apices of teeth creates problems if periapical inflammation occurs. This can lead to a perforation into the sinus and cause sinusitis. Persistent and complicated situations that do not respond after nonsurgical root canal treatment demand a suitable surgical therapy. Knowledge of the specific anatomic conditions, an adequate diagnosis, and an appropriate surgical procedure facilitate success rates that are comparable with those obtained in other regions, even in unfavorable initial conditions.

Detection of vascular endothelial growth factor/ vascular permeability factor in periapical lesions.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), also known as vascular permeability factor (VPF), is a multifunctional cytokine. It is overexpressed in several conditions, which are characterized by vascular hyperpermeability and angiogenesis. In this investigation, we have evaluated the possibility that VEGF/VPF could be expressed in periapical lesions. We studied 17 periapical granulomas and 6 periapical cysts by immunohistochemistry. An immunopositive reaction for VEGF/VPF was observed in all 23 periapical lesions; however, the intensity of immunostaining by anti-VEGF antibody varied according t

Natural killer cells and alterations in collagen density: signs of periradicular herpesvirus infection?

This study evaluated the presence and density of natural killer (NK) cells as well as collagen density in chronic apical periodontitis lesions and tried to find any correlations with concomitant herpesvirus infection or histopathological status of the lesion. Surgical specimens of chronic apical periodontitis lesions were surveyed for the presence and density of NK cells by immunohistochemical analysis. Collagen density in these lesions was quantified by means of histochemistry. All specimens were positive for the presence of CD57-positive cells. Topographically, CD57-positive cells were found

Herpesviruses in asymptomatic apical periodontitis lesions: an immunohistochemical approach.

INTRODUCTION: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) have been recently detected in samples from apical periodontitis lesions by means of molecular biology techniques and a role in the pathogenesis of this disease has been suggested. The present study was designed to survey asymptomatic primary apical periodontitis lesions for the presence of HCMV- and/or EBV-infected cells by means of immunohistochemistry. METHODS: Apical periodontitis lesions were obtained from 35 patients [26 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) -seronegative patients and nine HIV-seropositive patients] af

[The radicular cyst in the maxillary sinus encountered in the clinical otorhinolaryngological practice].

This article was designed to report the clinical case of the radicular cyst localized in the maxillary sinus of the 23 year-old man that had been detected before the surgical intervention was undertaken for its treatment. In the preceding visits of the patient to other medical settings, this condition was misinterpreted as a genuine (rhinogenic) cyst. It accounted for the choice of the inadequate surgical strategy for the management of this pathology. As a result, the patient experienced two relapse episodes of the disease. The thorough analysis of the patient's medical history and CT images o

Radiologic Evaluation of Oral Health Status in Patients Admitted to the Intensive Care Unit: A Multi-Institutional Retrospective Study.

Introduction: Surveys distributed among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses reveal a significant need for dental care, with many acknowledging poor oral hygiene management. Poor oral health in ICU patients is linked to systemic problems, including aspiration pneumonia, necessitating pre-intervention assessments for bacterial diseases and dental risks. This study aims to evaluate the oral health status of ICU patients across three institutions through retrospective analysis. Methods: This retrospective study assessed the oral health status of ICU patients, using computed tomography (CT) images fro
