Unwanted hair growth presents a significant problem for many patients and considerable resources are spent to achieve a hair-free appearance. Our aim of this study was to further evaluate the efficacy of this method in hirsutism in our region. BACKGROUND: Hypermelanosis includes a diverse group of genetic and acquired skin anomalies that appear as darker, hyperpigmented areas. Melasma, in particular, is a hypermelanotic condition that affects sun-exposed skin in females. Whether this condition is acquired or genetic is still controversial. We introduce a beam profiler of pulsed lasers based on the photoacoustic technique. The method assumes that the initial pressure distribution inside the acoustic cell follows the laser intensity pattern if absorbed energy relaxes rapidly. This initial pressure condition can be described as a superposition of acoustic modes of different amplitudes and phases. We analyze how to reconstruct the intensity profile of the laser beam from the recorded acoustic signals. Finally, we present preliminary results obtained with a frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser that excites NO(2)-CF(2)Cl(2) mixtures.

Rosacea is a chronic and progressive inflammatory skin disorder affecting the facial convexities for which no curative measure is currently available. A new recording and display system is described for use with pulsed Doppler blood flow velocity detectors in the diagnosis of valvular and septal defects. The principles of the pulsed Doppler device are described along with the methods used to analyze and display the Doppler shifted signal from flow jets resulting from various valve defects. An M-mode display is combined with blood flow display to provide a convenient record of the clinical procedure. Examples of aortic stenosis, aortic insufficiency, mitral stenosis and regurgitation are presented along with signals from other valves.
