Mechanical Strength and Surface Analysis of a Composite Made from Recycled Carbon Fibre Obtained via the Pyrolysis Process for Reuse in the Manufacture of New Composites.

This work aims to obtain recycled carbon fibre and develop an application for this new material. The carbon fibres were obtained by recycling aerospace prepreg waste via the pyrolysis process. The recycled fibres were combined with an Araldite LH5052/Aradur LY5053 epoxy resin/hardener system using manual lay-up and vacuum bagging processes. For comparison, the same resin/hardener system was used to produce a composite using commercial carbon fibre. The recycled and commercial composites were subjected to flexural, tensile and Mode I testing. Fracture aspects were analysed via scanning electron…

Graphitic biochar with in situ confined magnetic iron oxides via synchronous pyrolysis of lignin as an effective H2O2 activator for fast degradation of organic pollutants.

Magnetic iron oxide confined in carbon capsules/biochar composite (FeOx@g-BC) was created using in-situ synchronous pyrolysis of alkali lignin as a low-cost carbon source. Characterization results indicated the FeOx was confined in carbon nanotubes and carbon capsules, inhibiting growing of nanoparticles and deactivation. The composite catalyst demonstrated significant activity in activating H2O2 for the degradation of persistent organic pollutants in water over a wide pH range. Particularly, tetracycline (TC) could be completely degraded within 25 min, even at a high pH of 6.8, which performe…

The conversion of chicken manure to bio-oil by fast pyrolysis. III. Analyses of chicken manure, bio-oils and char by Py-FIMS and Py-FDMS.

Fast pyrolysis of chicken manure produced the following three fractions: bio-oil Fraction I, bio-oil Fraction II, and a char. In a previous investigation we analyzed each of the four materials by curie-point pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (CpPy-FDMS). The objective of this article is to report on the analyses of the same chicken manure and the three fractions derived from it by fast pyrolysis. We now used pyrolysis-field ionization mass spectrometry (Py-FIMS) to characterize the three fractions. In addition, the two bio-oil materials were analyzed by pyrolysis-field desorption …

The pyrolysis behaviors of phosphorus-containing organosilicon compound modified ammonium polyphosphate with different phosphorus-containing groups, and their different flame-retardant mechanisms in polyurethane foam.

Two phosphorus-containing organosilicon compounds (PCOCs) with similar structure but different phosphorus-containing groups (phenyl phosphate group, PCOC1; phenylphosphoryl group, PCOC2) were synthesized. They were used to modify ammonium polyphosphate (APP), and the products obtained were coded as MAPP1 and MAPP2. Then MAPP1 and MAPP2 were respectively incorporated into low-density rigid polyurethane foam (LD-RPUF). The pyrolysis behavior of these two kinds of MAPP was investigated. Results showed that PCOC2, with the phenylphosphoryl group, induced the decomposition of APP, leading to early …

Recycling Fiber-Reinforced Polyamide Waste from the Automotive Industry: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of an Advanced Pyrolysis Process to Reclaim Glass Fibers and Valuable Chemicals.

The generation of pyrolysis liquids and gases with poor quality is a limiting factor for the development of the recycling process of fiber-reinforced plastic waste. In this article, the life cycle assessment (LCA) of an advanced two-step pyrolysis process to recycle glass fiber-reinforced polyamide waste is presented. First, the solid waste is pyrolyzed by heating up at 3 °C/min to 500 °C in a tank reactor. The generated volatiles are subsequently thermally cracked at 900 °C in a tubular packed bed reactor. The process is able to reclaim the glass fibers similarly to the conventional one react…

Testing Flight-like Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry as Performed by the Mars Organic Molecule Analyzer Onboard the ExoMars 2020 Rover on Oxia Planum Analog Samples.

The Mars Organic Molecule Analyzer (MOMA) onboard the ExoMars 2020 rover (to be landed in March 2021) utilizes pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with the aim to detect organic molecules in martian (sub-) surface materials. Pyrolysis, however, may thermally destroy and transform organic matter depending on the temperature and nature of the molecules, thus altering the original molecular signatures. In this study, we tested MOMA flight-like pyrolysis GC-MS without the addition of perchlorates on well-characterized natural mineralogical analog samples for Oxia Planum, the des…

Study of the Gas-Phase Pyrolysis of N-Aryl-3-Oxobutanamides and the 2-Aryl Hydrazone Derivatives: A Novel Computational Approach Including DFT with Multivariant Analysis.

In this work, we carried out a computational study of the gas-phase thermal decomposition of N-aryl-3-oxobutanamides (β-ketoamides) and the 2-arylhydrazone derivatives. We performed calculations using density functional theory (DFT) at the B97D-GD3BJ/deft2tzvp level, with multivariant analysis including descriptors of global reactivity, e.g., ionization energy (I), electron affinity (A), molecular hardness (η) and electrophilicity (ω). The objective was to elucidate the reaction mechanism. To this end, we modeled the structures of reactants, transition state structures (TSs) and products and s

Kill two birds with one stone: The management of hazardous waste and the preparation of efficient adsorbents for Pb(II) were realized by the pyrolysis of penicillin mycelial dreg.

The penicillin industry produces a large amount of penicillin mycelial dreg (PMD), potentially causing severe environmental problems without proper treatment and disposal. To achieve the goals of PMD management, the present work explored the potential of PMD as a novel feedstock to produce biochar with very high adsorption performance. PMD was pyrolyzed at 400-800 °C to prepare biochars (PMD-BCs), and the physical and chemical properties were characterized using various methods. The adsorption capacities of Pb2+ on PMD-BC400, PMD-BC600, and PMD-BC800 were 37.04, 62.89, and 107.53 mg/g, respect

Environmental persistence and inefficiency of natural attenuation in the removal of pyrolysis oils in Canadian marine waters under cold temperatures: Implications for hazardous and noxious substances spill preparedness.

Pyrolysis oils are emerging alternative fuels that are increasingly being transported in marine environments. Although produced from renewable resources, their physicochemical properties result in their classification as hazardous and noxious substances (HNS). Limited information is available regarding the effectiveness of traditional clean-up and remediation strategies for their removal across geographically distinct marine environments, under cold-water conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of natural attenuation in three Canadian marine environments under…

Methanol-induced assembly and pyrolysis preparation of three-dimensional N-doped interconnected open carbon cages supported FeNb2O6 nanoparticles for boosting oxygen reduction reaction and Zn-air battery.

Three-dimensional (3D) hollow carbon is one of advanced nanomaterials widely applied in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, iron niobate (FeNb2O6) nanoparticles supported on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived 3D N-doped interconnected open carbon cages (FeNb2O6/NICC) were prepared by methanol induced assembly and pyrolysis strategy. During the fabrication process, the evaporation of methanol promoted the assembly and cross linkage of ZIF-8, rather than individual particles. The assembled ZIF-8 particles worked as in-situ sacrificial templates, in turn forming hierarchically interconn…

Upcycling of end-of-life wind turbine blades: Phosphoric acid-activated balsa carbon as a catalyst for the co-pyrolysis of epoxy resin and polyvinyl chloride core into phenolic compounds.

To enhance the resource utilization of end-of-life wind turbine blades (EolWTBs), this study proposes an innovative catalytic co-pyrolysis approach integrating catalyst preparation and synergistic recycling of different blade components. Specifically, this study first utilized H3PO4 as an activator to convert balsa wood from the balsa wood-filled part (EolWTB-1) into an H3PO4-AC catalyst, which was subsequently utilized to catalyze the co-pyrolysis of the glass fiber-reinforced polymer (EolWTB-3) and PVC-filled (EolWTB-4) parts. This strategy realized both waste-derived catalyst production and…
