The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of chronic inflammatory periapical diseases in different regions of Brazil and to compare with data from the literature. A multicenter study was carried out in four Brazilian referral centers in oral diagnosis. Histopathological records were reviewed, and all cases diagnosed microscopically as periapical granuloma, radicular cyst, and periapical abscess were included. Demographic and clinical data were collected. Descriptive statistics and Pearson's chi-square test were performed. A total of 10,381 cases …

INTRODUCTION: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are the major class of enzymes responsible for degradation of extracellular matrix components and participate in the pathogenesis of periapical inflammatory lesions. MMP expression may be regulated by DNA methylation. The purpose of the present investigation was to analyze the expression of MMP2 and MMP9 in periapical granulomas and radicular cysts and to test the hypothesis that, in these lesions, their transcription may be modulated by DNA methylation.
METHODS: Methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction was used to evaluate the DNA methylat…

Clinical differentiation between cystic lesions of endodontic and non-endodontic origin is of importance because correct diagnosis may affect treatment decision making. Most radicular cysts are treated with conservative approaches and, therefore, are not surgically removed. The objective of this study was to determine the accuracy of clinical diagnosis of periapical lesions as compared to the histological findings, and to evaluate various associated factors. All biopsy specimens submitted for histological evaluation from 2002 to 2009 were assessed. Only cases of periapical lesions with complet…

AIM: To determine the immunocytochemical pattern of expression of transforming growth factor (TGF) alpha, epidermal growth factor (EGF), and TGF beta in the three most common types of odontogenic jaw cyst.
METHODS: Growth factor expression was detected in paraffin wax sections of odontogenic cysts (27 odontogenic keratocysts, 10 dentigerous cysts, and 10 radicular cysts) using a streptavidin-biotin peroxidase technique with monoclonal antibodies directed against TGF alpha (clone 213-4.4) and TGF beta (clone TB21) and a polyclonal antibody directed against EGF (Z-12).
RESULTS: The epithelial …

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this report was to assess p53 and MDM2 expression in odontogenic cysts and tumours, as they are known to play important roles in cell proliferation and tumorigenesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The expression of p53 and MDM2 proteins was determined immunohistochemically in 51 formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded specimens of odontogenic cysts and tumours.
RESULTS: No positivity to p53 was found in the cases studied. MDM2 expression in ameloblastoma was higher than in radicular cysts, but lower than that observed in odontogenic keratocysts. No difference was observed between MD…

Of the most common odontogenic cysts, radicular cysts represent cystic lesions of inflammatory origin and are managed either by surgical enucleation or by marsupialization. This article aims to report a clinical case of radicular cyst of a huge proportion treated with a conservative management. An illustration of possible complete healing of such a cystic periapical lesion in mixed dentition with conservation of vital structures is covered. The term juxta-facet cyst summarizes synovial cysts, arising from degenerated facet joints and ganglion cysts, developing from mucinous degeneration of periarticular connective tissue. Most juxta-facet cysts are observed at the L4/5 level, which generally has the most motion within the lumbar spine. In this retrospective study 31 juxta-facet cysts in 28 patients were detected within 2898 lumbar MRI studies over a 2-year period (frequency 1%). 24 patients complained of back and lower extremity pain, the other 4 patients had unilateral back pain. In 7 cases radicular symptoms were observed, in 6

OBJECTIVES: To determine the relative frequency, demographic and pathologic profiles of patients diagnosed with cysts of the jaws.
MATERIAL … s 1.27:1. The majority of the lesions were encountered in the mandible. The most prevalent cyst was radicular cyst followed by dentigerous cyst and odontogenic keratocyst. In the paediatric group, dentigerous cyst was the most prevalent, whereas in the geriatric group, radicular cyst was the most common.
CONCLUSIONS: In general, the results of this study are in …

A systematic review of the literature from 1993 to 2011 was undertaken examining frequency data of the most common odontogenic cysts and tumors. Seven inclusion criteria were met for the paper to be incorporated. In the preliminary search 5231 papers were identified, of these 26 papers met the inclusion criteria. There were 18 297 odontogenic cysts reported. Of these there were 9982 (54.6%) radicular cysts, 3772 (20.6%) dentigerous cysts and 2145 (11.7%) keratocystic odontogenic tumors. With the reclassification of keratocystic odontogenic tumor in 2005 as an odontogenic tumor, there were 8129…

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: There is no previous report on the intraspinal ganglion cyst of the posterior longitudinal ligament in a teenager.
PURPOSE: To report a case of radiculopathy caused by a ganglion cyst of the posterior longitudinal ligament in a teenager.
STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
METHODS: A 17-year-old male with a 4-month history of left L5 radicular pain was found to have an intraspinal cystic lesion causing radicular compression. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a cystic lesion located in the ventral side of the dura. The patient suffered from severe leg pain. As a result, a surgical

BACKGROUND: Secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) has been shown to modulate aggressive behavior in several benign and malignant tumors. Little is known about SPARC expression in odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), an odontogenic cyst with an aggressive nature. To the best of our knowledge, only one study has been investigated the expression of this protein in OKCs. This study aimed to characterize SPARC expression in OKCs. Additionally, to determine whether SPARC is associated with aggressive behavior in OKCs, SPARC expression in OKCs was compared with radicular cysts (RCs), dentiger…

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of Hounsfield unit (HU) assessment with multislice-CT in the differentiation of radicular cysts (RCs), dentigerous cysts (DCs) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs).
METHODS: In total, 307 odontogenic cysts (RCs, DCs and OKCs) were included in this study. Cysts with lesion diameter <10 mm, cysts with artefacts affecting measurement of HU values, cysts involving infection and recurrent cysts were regarded as exclusion criteria. Images were acquired in three different types of CT scanners: Aquilion ONE, Discovery CT750 HD and SOM…
