UNLABELLED: We observed an association between rotavirus diarrhoea and hypocalcaemia in several patients and therefore started a prospective evaluation with measurement of calcium levels in all patients with rotavirus infection during a period of 8 months. We report on 54 infants with rotavirus gastro-enteritis. Serum concentrations of sodium, potassium, and total and ionized calcium were measured on admission. If hypocalcaemia was detected, total and ionized calcium were measured every day until recovery. Calcium was supplemented as calcium gluconate which was added to milk. Out of 54 newborn

Gastroenteritis viruses are the leading etiologic agents of diarrhea in children worldwide. We present data from thirty-three (33) eligible studies published between 2003 and 2023 from African countries bearing the brunt of the virus-associated diarrheal mortality. Random effects meta-analysis with proportion, subgroups, and meta-regression analyses were employed. Overall, rotavirus with estimated pooled prevalence of 31.0 % (95 % CI 24.0-39.0) predominated in all primary care visits and hospitalizations, followed by norovirus, adenovirus, sapovirus, astrovirus, and aichivirus with pooled prev

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) causes significant morbidity, especially in young children, and frequently requires hospitalization even in developed countries. Surveillance studies of AGE are important to determine the prevalence and variety of bacterial and viral pathogens, to initiate targeted preventive measures, such as vaccine programmes, and to monitor its impact. A prospective study was conducted in children <5 years old, admitted with AGE between April 2006 and April 2007 to the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital, Seville, Spain. Demographic and clinical data were collected and patients

Rotaviral enteritis has emerged as a major cause of morbidity and mortality in piglets during their post-natal life. The present study was carried out to examine high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) protein, acute phase response and oxidative stress indices in the serum of suckling piglets suffering from enteritis with or without association of porcine group A rotavirus infection. The present investigation utilized 23 clinical cases with signs of acute enteritis and 12 more healthy piglets of a similar age group as control animals. Out of 23 enteritis cases, 12 cases were found to be positive for

Rotavirus infection is a major cause of paediatric gastroenteritis and has increasingly been associated with neurological complications, although direct evidence of central nervous system involvement remains limited. In this study, Rotavirus A was detected in both cerebrospinal fluid and stool samples from a child presenting with encephalopathy and seizures, and infectious virus was successfully propagated in mammalian cell lines. Genomic analysis revealed a Wa-like genotype constellation, G1-P[8]-I1-R1-C1-M1-A1-N1-T1-E1-H1. Although lateral flow immunoassay yielded negative results, molecular

Noroviruses are the second leading cause of death in children under the age of 5 years old. They are responsible for 200 million cases of diarrhoea and 50,000 deaths in children through the word, mainly in low-income countries. The objective of this review was to assess how the prevalence and genetic diversity of noroviruses have been affected by the introduction of rotavirus vaccines in Africa. PubMed, Web of Science and Science Direct databases were searched for articles. All included studies were conducted in Africa in children aged 0 to 5 years old with gastroenteritis. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled multicenter trial was conducted in healthy Chinese infants to assess the efficacy and safety of a hexavalent live human-bovine reassortant rotavirus vaccine (HRV) against rotavirus gastroenteritis (RVGE). A total of 6400 participants aged 6-12 weeks were enrolled and randomly assigned to either HRV (n = 3200) or placebo (n = 3200) group. All the subjects received three oral doses of vaccine four weeks apart. The vaccine efficacy (VE) against RVGE caused by rotavirus serotypes contained in HRV was evaluated from 14 days after three doses of adm

Noroviruses are, after rotaviruses, the second most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in young children. In a prospective study conducted in 2009-2010 at the Tampere University Hospital, 195 stool specimens were collected from cases of acute gastroenteritis in children and examined for noroviruses, sapoviruses, and rotaviruses, using a reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Noroviruses were found in 49 (25%) of the cases and sapoviruses in 12 (6%). The norovirus genotype GII.4 dominated with a 76% share; other genotypes detected were GII.7/GII.6 (16%), GII.g/GII.12, GII.

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus vaccine (Rotarix [RV1]) has reduced diarrhea-associated hospitalizations and deaths in Malawi. We examined the trends in circulating rotavirus genotypes in Malawi over a 22-year period to assess the impact of RV1 introduction on strain distribution.
METHODS: Data on rotavirus-positive stool specimens among children aged <5 years hospitalized with diarrhea in Blantyre, Malawi before (July 1997-October 2012, n = 1765) and after (November 2012-October 2019, n = 934) RV1 introduction were analyzed. Rotavirus G and P genotypes were assigned using reverse-transcription polymer

A recent meta-analysis investigating the association between intussusception (IS) and rotavirus (RV) vaccination demonstrated an absence of risk up to 2 years after vaccination. Meta-analyses including only randomized clinical trials are inadequate to identify a potential increased risk of rare adverse events such as IS. The study conducted failed to discuss relevant limitations. Additionally, the safety profiles of newer RV vaccines, evaluated in clinical studies with limited sample size, were considered comparable with that of the well-established and widely used RV vaccines, RotaTeq and Rot

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus is the leading cause of severe diarrhea among young children worldwide. Rotavirus vaccines have demonstrated substantial benefits in many countries that have introduced vaccine nationally. In China, where rotavirus vaccines are not available through the national immunization program, it will be important to review relevant local and global information to determine the potential value of national introduction. Therefore, we reviewed evidence of rotavirus disease burden among Chinese children younger than 5 years to help inform rotavirus vaccine introduction decisions.

In April 2004, an outbreak of acute diarrheal illness occurred among the Orang Asli (aborigine) in the Cameron Highlands, Pahang State, Peninsular Malaysia, where rotavirus was later implicated as the cause. In the course of the epidemic investigation, stool samples were collected and examined for infectious agents including parasites. Soil transmitted helminthes (STH), namely Ascaris lumbricoides (25.7%), Trichuris trichiura (31.1%) and hookworm (8.1%), and intestinal protozoa, which included Giardia lamblia (17.6%), Entamoeba histolytica/E. dispar (9.4%), Blastocystis hominis (8.1%) and Cryp

Foodborne infections are the leading cause of health problems during and after travel to areas of low hygienic standards. The majority of cases are traveler's diarrhea. However, some foodborne infections can cause severe or chronic enteritis (e.g. shigellosis, typhoid fever, amebic dysentery, helminth infections), or diseases of other organ systems (e.g. hepatitis A, poliomyelitis, tissue parasitoses). The etiology of traveler's diarrhea is heterogeneous. Most common are bacteria, notably enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), salmonella, shigella, campylobacter, and rotavirus. New diagnosti

Rotaviruses remain the leading cause of severe dehydrating diarrhea and associated mortality in children under five years of age worldwide. The successful global rollout of live-attenuated oral rotavirus vaccines has dramatically reduced rotavirus gastroenteritis morbidity and mortality, unequivocally demonstrating their excellent safety profile and potent induction of mucosal immunity. These attributes highlight the substantial potential of rotaviruses as novel oral mucosal vaccine vectors. Recent breakthroughs in reverse genetics, particularly the establishment of a fully plasmid-based syste
