Studies on the quantitative computed tomography of normal parotid and submandibular salivary glands.

A better understanding of computed tomographic (CT) numbers of normal salivary glands might help make CT diagnosis more accurate. The CT numbers of the parotid and submandibular salivary glands were measured using both non-enhanced and enhanced CT images by setting a circular region of interest (ROI). The normal range of CT numbers, the difference between the CT numbers of right and left glands, and the correlation with age were all investigated. There was a close correlation between the CT numbers of right and left glands. No significant difference was seen between the average of right and le

Role of the Accessory Parotid Gland in the Etiology of Parotitis: Statistical Analysis of Sialographic Features.

This retrospective study aimed to identify if the existence of the accessory parotid gland correlated with the etiology of parotitis. This may aid the development of better treatment strategies in the future. Sialographic features of cases with parotitis and healthy subjects were reviewed. The chi-square test was used to compare the incidence of accessory parotid gland between the groups. The Student's t test was used to compare the length of Stensen's duct, the length from the orifice to the confluence of the accessory duct, and the angle between the accessory duct and Stensen's duct between

Comparison of radiation dose for implant imaging using conventional spiral tomography, computed tomography, and cone-beam computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare typical patient radiation dose delivered in implant imaging with spiral computed tomography (CT), conventional spiral tomography, and cone-beam CT (CBCT). STUDY DESIGN: The Scanora (Orion Corporation Soredex, Helsinki, Finland), Spiral HiSpeed/Fxi (General Electric, Milwaukee, WI), and Classic iCAT (Imaging Sciences International, Hatfield, PA) units were selected to represent conventional spiral tomography, spiral CT, and CBCT, respectively. Thermoluminescent dosimeters were used in a Rando phantom to measure radiation-absorbed doses to t

Automated segmentation and deep learning classification of ductopenic parotid salivary glands in sialo cone-beam CT images.

PURPOSE: This study addressed the challenge of detecting and classifying the severity of ductopenia in parotid glands, a structural abnormality characterized by a reduced number of salivary ducts, previously shown to be associated with salivary gland impairment. The aim of the study was to develop an automatic algorithm designed to improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency in analyzing ductopenic parotid glands using sialo cone-beam CT (sialo-CBCT) images. METHODS: We developed an end-to-end automatic pipeline consisting of three main steps: (1) region of interest (ROI) computation, (2) paro

Pediatric salivary gland obstructive swelling: sialendoscopic approach.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of sialendoscopy as a diagnostic and interventional procedure for salivary ductal pathologies of children. DESIGN: Prospective case series study. SETTING: Tertiary care teaching hospitals. PATIENTS: Eight children were investigated under general anesthesia by sialendoscopy for recurring salivary gland swellings between 2003 to 2004 in two university centers. INTERVENTION: Diagnostic sialendoscopy was used for classifying ductal lesions as sialolithiasis or stenosis. Interventional sialendoscopy was used to treat these disorders. Different variables were an

Congenital salivary gland anlage tumor - in utero and postnatal imaging.

We present a case of an infant with congenital salivary gland anlage tumor, with fetal and postnatal imaging. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case describing the in utero imaging findings of salivary gland anlage tumor. A fetal MRI was performed secondary to the clinical finding of polyhydramnios, which identified a nasopharyngeal mass. Because findings were concerning for airway obstruction, the fetus was delivered by ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) to airway procedure. A postnatal CT confirmed the findings of the fetal MRI. The lesion was resected when the baby was 4 da

Pediatric sialadenitis.

Sialadenitis in the pediatric population accounts for up to 10% of all salivary gland disease. Viral parotitis and juvenile recurrent parotitis are the two most common causes. Multiple factors, independently or in combination, can result in acute, chronic, or recurrent acute salivary gland inflammation. Sialendoscopy has emerged as the leading diagnostic technique and intervention for pediatric sialadenitis. Sialendoscopy is a safe and effective gland-preserving treatment of pediatric sialadenitis. Investigational studies are needed to address the impact of steroid instillation, postoperative

Mucus escape reaction that involves the mandible: a case report and diagnostic imaging considerations.

We present a case of mucus escape reaction in which we encountered difficulty in interpreting the images acquired by plain radiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. The 48-year-old male Japanese patient was referred for evaluation of a gradual swelling subjacent to the inferior border of the left mandible. At the early imaging examinations, magnetic resonance imaging provided information crucial to resolving the issue of whether the lesion consisted of a central malignant disease process or a malignant disease in the submandibular space or both of these two separate dis

Sjögren's syndrome and mixed connective tissue disease.

We investigated the clinical significance of the close association of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) by analyzing the clinical manifestations, sialographic findings and immunological parameters of MCTD and primary SS. The prevalence of sialectasia or SS in MCTD was significantly higher than in any other connective tissue diseases. The prevalence of Raynaud's phenomenon, swollen fingers, arthralgias, lymphadenopathy, sclerodactyly, muscle weakness, fever and erythema was significantly higher in MCTD than in primary SS. There were no significant differences b

Increased salivary gland density on contrast-enhanced CT after head and neck radiation.

In an attempt to determine whether radiation therapy leads to an increased density of salivary glands on subsequent contrast-enhanced CT, 109 CT scans from 78 patients with head and neck tumors were reviewed. The density of parotid and submandibular glands was subjectively evaluated (compared with adjacent muscle) and correlated with treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Density of the parotid and/or submandibular glands was found to be significantly associated with previous irradiation on contrast-enhanced scans (p less than .05). One or both glands were denser than normal

[Immuno-histological findings on Sjögren's syndrome].

Six cases of SS, 12 cases of SS in association with other diseases (AR, LES, MCTD, SSP) and 14 cases of various diseases with no clinical signs of SS (AR, UCTD, LES, MCTD, PM, cutaneous PAN, Scheuermann's disease, ankylosing spondylitis) have been examined. Examination of the patients included general clinical, stomatological and ophthalmological examinations, slit lamp and Schirmer I test, labial biopsy direct immunofluorescence on labial biopsy, indirect immunofluorescence on labial biopsy of a healthy subject scialography and salivary scintiscan. Various seroimmunological tests were also pe
