The duct system of murine submandibular gland is composed, in contrast with other mammals, by four types of ducts, among which the granular duct is unique for rodents. Developmental changes (from 2 to 26 weeks) in phosphodiesterase (PDE) activity in the rat submandibular gland were investigated. Major activities for both cAMP- and cGMP-PDE were present in the 100000 x g supernatant fractions (70-90% of total activities), but not in the pellet fractions, during development. The present study deals with immunohistochemical localization of PTHrP in bank vole, pine vole and white mouse submandibular glands. PTHrP immunoreactivity was observed in epithelial cells of all ductal segments (intercalated, striated, interlobular and main excretory ducts) of the salivary glands in all the three animal species tested. This report describes a case of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma of the lacrimal glands that recurred in the submandibular salivary glands. Gray-scale sonography showed small hypoechoic nodules, measuring less than 0.5 cm in diameter, in both submandibular glands. The echogenicity and echotexture of the rest of the submandibular glands and of the parotid glands was normal. Power Doppler sonography revealed increased vascularity within the nodules. Sialoblastomas are rare perinatal epithelial salivary tumors, with only 22 reported cases in the literature. While they have been reported to occur predominantly in the parotid gland, we present one case of sialoblastoma of submandibular gland origin. The surgical management of this patient is discussed. Histopathologic examination, including immunochemical, ultrastructural and cytogenetic studies, was performed. Pertinent literature is reviewed.

The authors documented the case of healthy, 50 year old women with a sarcoid lesions of the parotid and submandibular gland without any other manifestations of the disease. The presence of noncaseating granulomas in salivary tissue is a specific feature of sarcoidosis. Primary involvement of the intraglandular lymph nodes with a secondary involvement of the salivary gland parenchyma was detected. Etiopathogenesis, diagnostics and clinical features of sarcoidosis were presented.

BACKGROUND: The cervical sympathetic trunk-submandibular gland (CST-SMG) axis plays an important role in inflammation. An immunoregulatory heptapeptide, submandibular gland peptide T (SGP-T), was isolated from submandibular glands, and several of its biological activities have been identified.
RESULTS: SGP-T reduced shock-induced hypotension and allergen-induced disruption of migrating myoelectric complexes and the magnitude of smooth muscle contraction. The heptapeptide inhibited the influx of neutrophils into carrageenin-soaked sponges.

Submandibular glands of rats injected with NaF solution (10 mg F-/kg body weight) were analysed for glycogen content and phosphorylase activity after various time intervals. In contrast to what has been reported for the liver, sodium fluoride caused increased glycogen content. Phosphorylase (a and total) activity was not affected, suggesting a different mechanism of action of F- in the submandibular gland. In vivo experiments demonstrated stimulation of glycogenesis.
