Incidence and significance of positive urine cultures in patients with an orthotopic neobladder.

PURPOSE: With an intact normal bladder bacterial colonization is uncommon unless intermittent catheterization is instituted. Because intestine, which is normally colonized with bacteria, is used to form an orthotopic neobladder, we determined whether patients with orthotopic urinary diversion are at increased risk for urinary tract infection and urosepsis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 66 patients who received an orthotopic neobladder after radical cystectomy were prospectively evaluated with urinalysis and culture 2 months to 4 years postoperatively. No patient was on suppressive antibio

Microbial Colonization and Associated Factors in Indwelling Urinary Catheters: A Cross-Sectional Study.

This study aimed to determine microbial colonization in indwelling urinary catheters (UCs) and identify patient-specific risk factors associated with this colonization. This cross-sectional study involved 61 hospitalized intensive care unit patients with indwelling UCs. Bacterial colonization and susceptibility were assessed in the indwelling UCs from the second day onwards following urinary catheterization. The average duration of catheterization was 13.62 ± 13.72 days. Colonization of 10⁵ CFU/mL and above was determined in all indwelling UCs from the second day of catheterization onwards. Th…

A comparison between foley and nelatone urinary catheters in causing urinary tract infection in animal models.

BACKGROUND: Urinary catheterization is one of the main measures used to treat and care for hospitalized patients. Several complications have been attributed to the presence of latex with routine Foley catheters. Therefore, some studies have recommended that Nelatone catheters be substituted for the ordinary Foley catheters to prevent these complications. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the rates of urinary tract infection (UTI) in rabbits catheterized either with Foley or with Nelatone catheters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted on 60 rabbits that we…

Cesarean section without urethral catheterization: a randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Urethral catheterization is done as a routine procedure in cesarean section. It is associated with high incidence of urinary tract infections, discomfort, delayed ambulation and longer hospital stay. OBJECTIVE: To determine the feasibility and safety of cesarean section without urethral catheterization. METHODS: A prospective, randomized controlled trial was carried out from April 2008 to March 2009, in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences. Among 150 patients who had undergone cesarean section 75 were catheterized and 75 were unc

Evaluating the Potential of a New Low-Profile Urinary Catheter in Preventing Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections: A Prospective Randomized Blinded Clinical Trial.

AIM: To investigate the efficacy of a new low-profile catheter on incidence of the catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) in comatose patients admitted to the intensive care unit. BACKGROUND: Catheter-induced urothelial injury is a key component in the development of urinary tract infections in catheterized patients. METHODS: In this prospective randomized blinded clinical trial, 80 patients requiring indwelling urinary catheterization were equally randomized to either the standard Foley catheter (control) or the low-profile catheter (experimental) group. The signs of urinary t…

Significant rate of lower urinary tract dysfunction in patients with sacrococcygeal teratomas.

BACKGROUND: Sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is the most commonly occurring presacral tumor and can affect the lower urinary tract by direct mass effect, or as a sequela from surgical resection. Despite the potential impact on urologic function, there is no current standard for urological involvement or follow-up for these patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the need for urologic involvement for lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) in patients with SCTs at our institution. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of patients diagnosed with SCT and managed at our insti

Voiding in patients managed with or without ultrasound monitoring of bladder volume after outpatient surgery.

UNLABELLED: The goal of this study was to determine whether recovery room monitoring of bladder volume would affect patient outcome after ambulatory surgery. Incidence of urinary retention and times to void and to discharge were compared in 161 patients managed with ultrasound bladder monitoring versus 173 controls without bladder monitoring. Urinary retention was diagnosed by clinical means or by ultrasound, confirmed by bladder catheterization. Patients were required to void or were catheterized before discharge. In the control patients without underlying risk factors for retention, median t

Establishment of new transurethral catheterization methods for male mice.

Transurethral catheterization in mice is multifaceted, serving essential functions such as perfusion and drug delivery, and is critical in the development of various urological animal disease models. The complex anatomy of the male mouse urethra presents significant challenges in transurethral catheterization, leading to a predominance of research focused on female specimens. This bias limits the utilization of male mice in lower urinary tract disease studies. Our research aims to develop new reliable methods for transurethral catheterization in adult male mice, thereby expanding their use in

Characterization and Outcomes of Iatrogenic Urethral Catheterization Injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Iatrogenic injury during urethral catheterization is a common reason for inpatient urologic consultation and is associated with increased morbidity and resource utilization. Literature defining the patient population, interventions, or outcomes associated with traumatic catheterization is scarce. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of consults for adult urethral catheterization at a single tertiary care center (July 2017-December 2019), with focus on patient characteristics and complications. Traumatic urethral catheterization was defined as catheterization by the prima

Ureteral Rupture Caused by a Suprapubic Catheter in a Male Patient With Spinal Cord Injury: A Case Report.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) may lead to urinary system disturbances. Patients with SCI usually have neurogenic bladder, and treatment optionss for this condition include clean intermittent catheterization and a permanent indwelling urethral or suprapubic catheter. Complications of catheterization include urinary tract infection, calculi, urinary tract injury, bladder contraction, bladder spasm, renal dysfunction, bladder cancer, and so forth. To the best of our knowledge, ureteral rupture is an unusual complication of catheterization, and ureteral rupture has been rarely reported in SCI patients.

Hemorrhagic Cystitis With Bladder Tamponade Associated With Morganella morganii in an Older Patient Without Recent Catheterization.

INTRODUCTION: Morganella morganii is an uncommon cause of urinary tract infection, typically associated with catheterization or underlying diseases. CASE PRESENTATION: I report a rare case of severe hemorrhagic cystitis with massive intravesical clot retention in a 90-year-old woman without recent catheterization or diabetes mellitus. Ultrasonography revealed a large intravesical hematoma requiring clot evacuation. Urine culture yielded M. morganii as the sole organism. The patient improved following antimicrobial therapy and supportive management. CONCLUSION: This case suggests that M. morg

Urethral catheterization of small female cats and dogs weighing less than ten kilograms: the two-catheter technique.

OBJECTIVE: To provide a video tutorial on how to perform an alternate method for urethral catheterization, the 2-catheter technique. ANIMALS: Small female cats and dogs that are too small for concurrent digital palpation (generally < 10 kg). METHODS: A larger red rubber catheter (18 Fr in dogs, and 10 Fr in cats) is gently fed into the vaginal canal and reflected dorsally, then a smaller urethral catheter can be introduced ventrally, angling downwards at a 45° angle, into the urethral orifice for urinary catheterization. RESULTS: The 2-catheter method is a useful alternative in petite femal…

Increased norepinephrine levels during catheterization in patients with spinal cord injury.

The hypothesis for this study was that catecholamine levels increase during urinary catheterization in human patients with spinal cord injury. Catecholamine levels, blood pressure, and pulse were measured prospectively in 40 subjects at baseline and during urinary catheterization. Results showed a significant increase in norepinephrine levels from baseline 245 +/- 240 pg (standard deviation (SD)) to 314 +/- 311 pg (SD) during catheterization (P = 0.018, Wilcoxon's). Results also showed a nonsignificant increase in epinephrine levels from baseline (56 +/- 70 pg, SD) to catheterization (84 +/- 1…

[Using a bladder catheter].

The procedure to drain a bladder consists in inserting a catheter through the urethral passage all the way to the bladder in order to open up a drainage way to the exterior, whether this drainage is temporary or permanent. This procedure is indicated in cases which require a strict control of diuresis, blood letting, or bladder surgery for sample gathering, to open up a passage to drain a bladder in cases of urinary retention, and catheterization for diagnostic purposes. This invasive procedure occurs frequently in hospitals, having a 10 to 15% incidence rate and is defined as the most prevale

[An experience with a continent appendix stoma].

The submucosally embedded in situ appendix guarantees an ideal continence mechanism in patients with ileocecal urinary reservoirs. To date this modification of the Mainz pouch technique was performed successfully in 10 patients between September 1990 and October 1992. Pouch capacity ranged from 350 ml to 900 ml (mean: 565 ml), frequency of intermittent self-catheterization ranged from 3 to 7 times per day (mean: 4.4-5.4 times) and complete urinary continence without difficulty of self-catheterization was obtained in eight patients. Two patients with stomal stenosis needed to indwell a catheter
