Family vitiligo impact scale: A scale to measure the quality-of-life of family members of patients with vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo places a significant psycho-social burden on caregivers and family members. AIMS: The aim of the study was to develop and preliminarily validate a scale to measure the psychosocial impact of vitiligo on adult family members. METHODS: Themes that emerged from qualitative interviews and a focus group discussion with family members were used to generate items for a preliminary scale, followed by pre-testing and scale development. The new scale was then tested with two comparator scales and a global question. RESULTS: A preliminary scale with 32 items was pilot tested on 30…

Future horizons in vitiligo research: focusing on the recommendations of the Cochrane systematic review 'Interventions for vitiligo' 2010.

The 'Implications for research' section of the Cochrane systematic review, 'Interventions for vitiligo', published in 2010, highlighted three main issues that impact the standard of vitiligo research: (i) lack of consensus on the classification and definition of vitiligo; (ii) lack of consensus on the methods of assessment and outcome measures for vitiligo; and (iii) heterogeneity of interventions compared. This article provides an update of the progress made to resolve these issues since the publication of the Cochrane systematic review in 2010, 'Interventions for vitiligo'.

Vitiligo autoantigen VIT75 is identified as lamin A in vitiligo by serological proteome analysis based on mass spectrometry.

VIT75 is a 75-kDa melanocyte membrane antigen (Ag) that had been observed, but not identified until now. Its immunopathogenic role in vitiligo remains unknown. In this study, serological proteome analysis based on mass spectrometry was employed to identify VIT75. Three disparate 75-, 60-, and 45-kDa proteins on two-dimensional (2D) gel were, respectively, identified as lamin A, tyrosinase-related protein 1, and melanin-concentrating hormone receptor 1. The latter two proteins are well-known Ags. Immunoreactivity analysis showed that the 75-kDa protein displayed on the 2D gel was recognized by …

Segmental vitiligo as the possible expression of cutaneous somatic mosaicism: implications for common non-segmental vitiligo.

Clinical findings in vitiligo challenge the widely accepted organ specific autoimmune pathomechanisms. We draw the attention to the fact that the distribution of segmental vitiligo (SV) fits in at least a subset of patients a pattern usually associated with cutaneous mosaicism. The association of SV to non-segmental vitiligo (NSV) now confirmed by several observations indicates a continuum between the two subsets with shared predisposing genetic factors, including genes operating specifically in the skin. Some pedigrees associating SV and NSV further suggest a mechanism of loss of heterozygosi…

[Induction of occupational leucoderma and vitiligo. Can butylated hydroxytoluene induce vitiligo similarly to p-tert-butylphenol?].

BACKGROUND: While vitiligo is usually idiopathic, some cases are caused by chemicals. If occupational exposure to p-tert-butylphenol (ptBP) leads to vitiligo, the legal requirements for occupational disease Nr. 1314 can be fulfilled in Germany. Chemicals of similar structure can induce local and more widespread symmetrical depigmentation with genital involvement, making the differential diagnosis more complicated. Occupationally caused depigmentation from other chemicals can also be treated according to § 9 sec. 2 of the occupational disease regulations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Some substances…

Therapeutic options and hot topics in vitiligo with special focus on pediatrics' vitiligo: A comprehensive review study.

Vitiligo is a common skin disorder with an estimated worldwide prevalence to 2.28% which is connected with selective melanocytes loss which leads to depigmentation and chalky-white macules. Vitiligo may be dismissed as a cosmetic problem and may have psychologic impacts on patients. It is occurring in both children and adults and is considered as the most common depigmenting skin disorder in the world. There are still many unknown topics about this disease regarding to its treatment in pediatrics, curable drugs and manifestations. Therefore, we decided to evaluate the recent studies about its …

Validation of a physician global assessment tool for vitiligo extent: Results of an international vitiligo expert meeting.

Currently, vitiligo lacks a validated Physician Global Assessment (PGA) for disease extent. This PGA can be used to stratify and interpret the numeric scores obtained by the Vitiligo Extent Score (VES). We investigated the interrater reliability of a 5-point PGA scale during an international vitiligo workshop. Vitiligo experts from five different continents rated photographs of non-segmental vitiligo patients with varying degrees of extent with the PGA score. Good interrater agreements (intraclass correlation coefficient >0.6) were observed between the raters overall and within each continent.…

Increased expression of CXCR3 and its ligands in patients with vitiligo and CXCL10 as a potential clinical marker for vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a skin disorder characterized by loss of melanocytes from the epidermis. A recent study reported that CXCL10 is critical for the progression and maintenance of depigmentation in a mouse model of vitiligo, but there is very limited clinical data regarding this issue and little is known about the dynamic changes or correlations with disease severity of these chemokines throughout the disease course. OBJECTIVES: To present clinical data that supports and identifies the pathway of CXCR3 and its ligands in T-lymphocytic cell recruitment in vitiligo. METHODS: Cytometric bea…

A Multicenter Collaborative Study by the Korean Society of Vitiligo about Patients' Occupations and the Provoking Factors of Vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: It was previously thought that persons with genetic predispositions to vitiligo develop the condition after exposure to various precipitating environmental factors. However, in many cases, the aggravating factors of vitiligo have not been clearly identified. OBJECTIVE: To identify the aggravating factors of vitiligo in the working environment and daily life. METHODS: A total of 489 vitiligo patients were recruited from 10 institutions in South Korea; patients were provided with a questionnaire about environmental factors and behavior patterns in the workplace and in daily life, a…

Vitiligo linked to stigmatization in British South Asian women: a qualitative study of the experiences of living with vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a visible condition that is more noticeable in darker-skinned people. Beliefs about illness have been linked to psychosocial adjustment. There is some evidence that such beliefs may be influenced by cultural factors. Surprisingly little is known about beliefs in relation to vitiligo. OBJECTIVES: The study sought to explore in depth the ways in which British Asian women manage and adjust psychosocially to vitiligo, and the potential role of ethnicity and culture in this process. METHODS: In-depth semistructured interviews were conducted with seven British women of Sout…

Vitiligo Extent Tensity Index (VETI) score: a new definition, assessment and treatment evaluation criteria in vitiligo.

Although skin is the largest organ of the body, there are no standardized reproducible methods for assessing severity of many skin diseases. Due to lack of consensus, methods of assessment and inexistence of precise scoring system, there is no application for vitiligo estimation in real practice. In this paper the author describes VETI score as a new treatment evaluation criteria and severity assessment method for vitiligo. This new tool, as does the PASI score in psoriasis, may be able to produce a constant and reproducible number and to help clinical research on vitiligo patients. Additional…

Retinitis pigmentosa associated with hearing loss, thyroid disease, vitiligo, and alopecia areata: retinitis pigmentosa and vitiligo.

A 54-year-old woman with retinitis pigmentosa and hearing loss developed white skin patches that were subsequently diagnosed as vitiligo. A review of the literature reveals that, although the association of vitiligo with various tapedoretinal degenerations has been reported on several occasions, the association with typical retinitis pigmentosa is quite rare. This combination of disorders associated with pigment loss is of interest as immunologic disturbances have been implicated on both.
