Reflex control of the spine and posture: a review of the literature from a chiropractic perspective.

OBJECTIVE: This review details the anatomy and interactions of the postural and somatosensory reflexes. We attempt to identify the important role the nervous system plays in maintaining reflex control of the spine and posture. We also review, illustrate, and discuss how the human vertebral column develops, functions, and adapts to Earth's gravity in an upright position. We identify functional characteristics of the postural reflexes by reporting previous observations of subjects during periods of microgravity or weightlessness. BACKGROUND: Historically, chiropractic has centered around the co…

Artificial gravity during spaceflight prevents gait and performance deficits in a gravity-dose dependent manner.

Long-term adaptations to spaceflight outside of low earth orbit (LEO), during deep space transit, and readaptations to partial gravity environments upon reaching a destination, are unclear. The combined effect of these adaptations to the LEO environment can result in declines in mobility and balance in astronauts during and after spaceflight. This study aimed to determine if there is a gravity threshold that protects from deficits in gait and performance. To do so, we exposed mice to four gravitational loading conditions (µg; 0.33 g; 0.67 g; and 1 g), induced by centrifugation, relative to pre

Beyond Earth: Recent Advancements in Microgravity Biomedical and Genetic Research in Saudi Arabia.

Microgravity research has emerged as a rapidly evolving field at the intersection of space medicine, genomics, biotechnology, and precision medicine. Exposure to the space environment induces complex physiological and molecular adaptations that affect multiple biological systems, including immune regulation, metabolism, musculoskeletal function, and gene expression. Recent advances in genomics, multi-omics technologies, artificial intelligence, and bioengineering have substantially improved our understanding of biological adaptation to spaceflight and expanded opportunities for translational b

The challenges and prospects of mammalian reproduction in extraterrestrial environments.

Humanity will eventually inhabit extraterrestrial environments, yet crucial questions remain regarding the feasibility of reproduction and long-term survival away from the Earth. Exposure to space radiation might induce DNA damage, potentially resulting in harmful mutations in future generations. Altered gravity on other planets or within space colonies could also interfere with embryonic and fetal development. For sustainable colonization beyond Earth, humans and essential animal species, e.g., livestock and companion animals, must be transported. To prevent inbreeding and genetic deteriorati

Physiological adaptation of the jugular venous pulse during long-duration spaceflight.

The jugular venous pulse (JVP) offers a non-invasive window into right atrial pressure. In microgravity, the serial JVP waveform during long-duration spaceflight had never been characterised. Using ECG-synchronised high-resolution ultrasound and a validated AI model, we quantified internal jugular vein cross-sectional area (IJV-CSA) throughout the cardiac cycle in four astronauts before and after flight, with in-flight measurements in one astronaut. Mean IJV-CSA fell significantly post-flight in three astronauts (ASTRO 0: from 0.723 ± 0.076 to 0.453 ± 0.061 cm2, ASTRO 2: - 46.0%, ASTRO 3: - 48

The effect of short-term microgravity and hypergravity on eyelid and brow position.

PURPOSE: Spaceflights induce periocular facial changes which could contribute to ocular conditions which affect astronauts. This study is to validate parabolic flight as a suitable model for studying gravitational facial changes. METHODS: Healthy participants (n = 13; 37 ± 10 years) underwent short-term exposure to microgravity and hypergravity during parabolic flight. Facial images were captured and differences in measurements from pupil center to upper and lower eyelid margins (MRD1 and MRD2), and to the inferior and superior eyebrow margin (PTBi and PTBs) under normogravity, microgravity,

Human-like acceleration and deceleration control of a robot astronaut floating in a space station.

The acceleration and deceleration (AD) motions are the basic motion modes of robot astronauts moving in a space station. Controlling the locomotion of the robot astronaut is very challenging due to the strong nonlinearity of its complex multi-body dynamics in a gravity-free environment. However, after training, humans can move well in space stations by pushing the bulkhead, and the motion mechanism of humans is a good reference for robot astronauts. The contribution of this study is modeling the human AD motion in a microgravity environment and proposing a human-like control method for robot a

Post space mission lumbo-pelvic neuromuscular reconditioning: a European perspective.

Long-duration exposure to the space environment causes physical adaptations that are deleterious to optimal functioning on Earth. Post-mission rehabilitation traditionally concentrates on regaining general muscle strength, neuromuscular control, and lumbo-pelvic stability. A particular problem is muscle imbalance caused by the hypertrophy of the flexor and atrophy of the extensor and local lumbo-pelvic muscles, increasing the risk of post-mission injury. A method currently used in European human spaceflight to aid post-mission recovery involves a motor control approach, focusing initially on t

Factors influencing the susceptibility of anurans to motion sickness.

We examined the propensity for motion sickness in five anuran species, concentrating our efforts on the treefrog Rhacophorus schlegelii, because it had shown the greatest susceptibility to motion sickness in a previous study. We used parabolic flight as our provocative stimulus and fed all specimens a known volume of food 1.5-3 h before flight. The presence of vomitus in a frog's cage was our indicator of motion sickness. Significantly more emesis was observed in flight-exposed than in control R. schlegelii (P < 0.05). There was no sex difference in susceptibility to motion sickness (P > 0.5).

Orthostatic hypotension and the role of changes in venous capacitance.

We suggest a mechanism by which blood volume changes might explain the hypotension that, after space flight, often accompanies the return to normal gravity. Upon entering microgravity, peripheral veins may collapse and, because of volume redistribution, raise the pressure in the central venous compartment. After some time in space, homeostatic mechanisms may cause volume excretion and reduce the pressure in the central venous compartment to normal values. Upon return to normal gravity, peripheral veins may re-expand and distribute a reduced blood volume into an enlarged space, thus lowering pr

Space motion sickness: phenomenology, countermeasures, and mechanisms.

A summary of the incidence of Space Motion Sickness (SMS) in 27 Soviet cosmonauts who flew on missions varying from 2-185 d in the Salyut-6/Soyuz vehicle complex is presented. A questionnaire indicated that 88% (24) of the cosmonauts developed some type of "illusionary sensations" while 44% (12) presented some degree of SMS. The SMS countermeasures used in flight included an antihistaminic drug, pneumatic cuffs applied to the thigh region, application of lower body negative pressure, a head cap that restricted head movement while simultaneously providing force stimulus to the cervical antigrav

Motion sickness susceptibility during rotation at 30 rpm in free-fall parabolic flight.

Free fall per se whether in parabolic or orbital flight may be regarded as a "partial" motion environment with respect to eliciting motion sickness, requiring an additional component to render this environment "complete" or stressful. Parabolic flight in toto falls in the category of a "complete" motion environment in that some persons became motion sick with head fixed and eyes closed. In the present experiment we selected subjects who were symptom free or nearly symptom free in the KC-135 with head fixed. All tests were conducted with the subject rotating at 30 rpm in a rotating litter chair

Microgravity Modulates Effects of Chemotherapeutic Drugs on Cancer Cell Migration.

Microgravity or the condition of apparent weightlessness causes bone, muscular and immune system dysfunctions in astronauts following spaceflights. These organ and system-level dysfunctions correlate with changes induced at the single cell level both by simulated microgravity on earth as well as microgravity conditions in outer space (as in the international space station). Reported changes in single bone cells, muscle cells and white blood cells include structural/morphological abnormalities, changes in gene expression, protein expression, metabolic pathways and signaling pathways, suggesting…

Space Radiation and Bone Loss.

Exposure to ionizing radiation may negatively impact skeletal integrity during extended spaceflight missions to the moon, Mars, or near-Earth asteroids. However, our understanding of the effects of radiation on bone is limited when compared to the effects of weightlessness. In addition to microgravity, astronauts will be exposed to space radiation from solar and cosmic sources. Historically, radiation exposure has been shown to damage both osteoblast precursors and local vasculature within the irradiated volume. The resulting suppression of bone formation and a general state of low bone-turnov…
