Complete vision-based traffic sign recognition supported by an I2V communication system.

This paper presents a complete traffic sign recognition system based on vision sensor onboard a moving vehicle which detects and recognizes up to one hundred of the most important road signs, including circular and triangular signs. A restricted Hough transform is used as detection method from the information extracted in contour images, while the proposed recognition system is based on Support Vector Machines (SVM). A novel solution to the problem of discarding detected signs that do not pertain to the host road is proposed. For that purpose infrastructure-to-vehicle (I2V) communication and a

Research on a novel artificial anal sphincter for human incontinence.

This paper discusses a novel artificial anal sphincter with sensor feedback for controlling anal incontinence. The artificial anal sphincter system is a novel hydraulic-electric muscle which mainly comprises an artificial anal sphincter, a wireless power supply subsystem, and a communication subsystem. High integration of all functional components and no wire linking to the outer device make surgical implantation easier and lower risk. The wireless power supply subsystem employs a Class-E power amplifier based on adaptive control technique, and the electromagnetic compatibility in biological t

Prognostic value of electrical bioimpedance measured with a portable and wireless device in acute heart failure.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The current evaluation of acute heart failure (HF) does not allow an adequate prediction of its evolution. The electrical bioimpedance (BI) allows knowing the state of blood volume, until now only with fixed equipment. We have developed and validated a portable and wireless device to measure BI at the ankle (IVOL). The objective of the study is to know the long-term prognostic value of the point measurement of BI with IVOL in patients with acute HF. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of unselected patients admitted for acute HF in a tertiary hospital. The associa

Stretchable, dynamic covalent polymers for soft, long-lived bioresorbable electronic stimulators designed to facilitate neuromuscular regeneration.

Bioresorbable electronic stimulators are of rapidly growing interest as unusual therapeutic platforms, i.e., bioelectronic medicines, for treating disease states, accelerating wound healing processes and eliminating infections. Here, we present advanced materials that support operation in these systems over clinically relevant timeframes, ultimately bioresorbing harmlessly to benign products without residues, to eliminate the need for surgical extraction. Our findings overcome key challenges of bioresorbable electronic devices by realizing lifetimes that match clinical needs. The devices explo

A low-cost, wireless near-infrared spectroscopy device detects the presence of lower extremity atherosclerosis as measured by computed tomographic angiography and characterizes walking impairment in peripheral artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) who experience intermittent claudication report a range of symptoms. Patients with symptoms other than classically described intermittent claudication may be at the highest risk for functional decline and mobility loss. Therefore, technologies allowing for characterization of PAD severity are desirable. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) allows for measurements of muscle heme oxygen saturation (StO2) during exercise. We hypothesized lower extremities affected by PAD would exhibit distinct NIRS profiles as measured by a low-cost, wireless

Measurement of scapular dyskinesis using wireless inertial and magnetic sensors: Importance of scapula calibration.

Measurement of 3D scapular kinematics is meaningful in patients with shoulder pathologies showing scapular dyskinesis. This study evaluates the effect of single and double anatomical calibration (0° and 120°) with a scapula locator compared to standard calibration (using sensor alignment with the spina scapulae and static upright posture, ISEO-protocol) on 3D scapular kinematics measured with an inertial and magnetic measurement system (IMMS). Ten patients with scapular dyskinesis performed humeral anteflexion and abduction movements while 3D scapular kinematics were measured using IMMS sensor

Endovascular approaches to neural interfacing: lessons from cardiovascular technologies.

Endovascular neural interfaces (ENIs) have emerged as a minimally invasive alternative to traditional neural interfaces. These devices are implanted within blood vessels adjacent to neural tissue to record or stimulate neural activity across the vessel wall. This enables minimally invasive implantation through angiographic procedures and reduces the risk of neural tissue damage. As they are deployed in the intravascular space, ENIs have a similar technological evolution to cardiovascular devices and share many features and constraints. First-generation ENIs borrowed guide wires and catheters e

Non-thermal biological effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation: Mechanistic insights into male reproductive vulnerability in the era of ubiquitous exposure.

The rapid proliferation of wireless technologies has led to continuous, low-intensity exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation (RF-EMR) from devices such as mobile phones, Wi-Fi routers, and wearable electronics. Although RF-EMR is non-ionizing, a growing body of evidence indicates that chronic exposure can induce non-thermal biological effects with significant implications for male reproductive health. This review synthesizes current findings on the mechanistic pathways through which RF-EMR may impair fertility, focusing on oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, DNA damage,

Brain-implanted conductors amplify radiofrequency fields in rodents: Advantages and risks.

Over the past few decades, daily exposure to radiofrequency (RF) fields has been increasing due to the rapid development of wireless and medical imaging technologies. Under extreme circumstances, exposure to very strong RF energy can lead to heating of body tissue, even resulting in tissue injury. The presence of implanted devices, moreover, can amplify RF effects on surrounding tissue. Therefore, it is important to understand the interactions of RF fields with tissue in the presence of implants, in order to establish appropriate wireless safety protocols, and also to extend the benefits of me

Animal board invited review: precision livestock farming for dairy cows with a focus on oestrus detection.

Dairy cows are high value farm animals requiring careful management to achieve the best results. Since the advent of robotic and high throughput milking, the traditional few minutes available for individual human attention daily has disappeared and new automated technologies have been applied to improve monitoring of dairy cow production, nutrition, fertility, health and welfare. Cows milked by robots must meet legal requirements to detect healthy milk. This review focuses on emerging technical approaches in those areas of high cost to the farmer (fertility, metabolic disorders, mastitis, lame

Initial experience of wireless-capsule endoscopy for evaluating occult gastrointestinal bleeding and suspected small bowel pathology.

OBJECTIVE: Small bowel pathology can be diagnosed using enteroscopy (which has limitations) and by x-ray (which is not sensitive for flat lesions). For the first time ever, we used a new technique, wireless-capsule video endoscopy, to diagnose small bowel pathology. Our aim was to prove the effectiveness and safety of this technology. METHODS: We used the Given (M2A) system in 35 patients, aged 18-80 yr, who suffered from unexplained GI bleeding or in whom there was a clinical suspicion of small bowel disease. All patients had a small bowel x-ray. Patients with suspected narrowing of the bowe

Subdermal Insertable Sensors for Health Monitoring: Applications, Challenges, and Emerging Technologies.

Continuous monitoring of chronic diseases with mobile health tools is rapidly advancing to improve patient care. Wearable sensors placed on or near the skin remain the dominant paradigm for collecting physiological data noninvasively during activities of daily living. However, wearable sensors have their limitations. Epidermal sensors are fundamentally limited by the information barrier that the skin presents. Furthermore, environmental factors impact the stability and longevity of wearables. An alternative technology is the expanding class of minimally invasive subdermal sensors, also called
