The effect of body mass index on illness characteristics in patients with affective disorders: Results from an Italian multicentric study.

OBJECTIVE: Patients suffering from severe mental disorders have a reduced life expectancy of 10-25 years compared to the general population, mainly due to the presence of physical comorbidities such us metabolic disorders. This study aims to explore the relationship between BMI and several clinical and sociodemographic factors in a sample of patients with affective disorders. METHODS: This is a naturalistic observational multicenter study carried-out in 7 Italian university sites. Patients aged 18-65 years with bipolar disorder (BD) or major depressive disorder (MDD), diagnosed according to D

Resilience in methamphetamine use disorder: A cross-sectional study on the role of childhood trauma, aggression, and temperament.

Stress plays a crucial role in the development and course of substance use disorders, including methamphetamine use disorder (MAUD). Psychological resilience refers to one's ability to cope with stress and adversity. In many psychiatric disorders, resilience is related to many factors such as impulsivity, aggression, childhood trauma, and affective temperament. However, these associations have been poorly studied in MAUD. This study aimed to explore key factors associated with resilience in individuals with MAUD. In total, 114 patients with MAUD were recruited. All participants completed the r

Distinct personality profiles associated with disease risk and diagnostic status in eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Personality traits have been associated with eating disorders (EDs) and comorbidities. However, it is unclear which personality profiles are premorbid risk rather than diagnostic markers. METHODS: We explored associations between personality and ED-related mental health symptoms using canonical correlation analyses. We investigated personality risk profiles in a longitudinal sample, associating personality at age 14 with onset of mental health symptoms at ages 16 or 19. Diagnostic markers were identified in a sample of young adults with anorexia nervosa (AN, n = 58) or bulimia ner

Examining the Link Between Intolerance of Uncertainty and Positive and Negative Urgency in Veterans With Comorbid Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Use Disorders.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUD) are highly comorbid among the veteran population. Impulsivity, particularly negative and positive urgency, are prevalent within this dual-diagnosis population and associated with negative outcomes. One possible correlate of negative/positive urgency is intolerance of uncertainty (IU). IU is associated with exacerbated PTSD symptom severity and increased risk for substance use. However, few studies have examined the link between IU and negative/positive urgency in dual-diagnosis populations. This study aimed to examine wheth

Transmission of Problem Gambling Between Adjacent Generations.

We investigate the extent to which gambling problems at age 20 are linked to parental gambling behaviour during childhood, employing data from a longitudinal study (ALSPAC) which has followed parents and children from Avon, England since pregnancy. 1058 children completed a problem gambling screen at age 20. When those children had been age 6, each of their parents was asked about their own gambling. We used regression to estimate the effect of parental gambling behaviour at child age 6 on the child's problem gambling risk at age 20. Parental gambling participation at child age 6 was not a pre

Association of Preoperative Visual Hallucinations With Cognitive Decline After Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is effective for the motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). Although most patients benefit with minimal cognitive side effects, cognitive decline is a risk, and there is little available evidence to guide preoperative risk assessment. Visual illusions or visual hallucinations (VHs) and impulse-control behaviors (ICBs) are relatively common complications of PD and its treatment and may be a marker of more advanced disease, but their relationship with postoperative cognition has not been established. The authors aimed to determine whether any preopera

Effects of benztropine analogs on delay discounting in rats.

RATIONALE: Methylphenidate and d-amphetamine, medications used for treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are used recreationally and self-administered by laboratory animals. Benztropine (BZT) analogs, like those medications, increase synaptic dopamine levels but are less effective in maintaining self-administration, suggesting clinical utility with less abuse liability. OBJECTIVES: The current study was designed to evaluate potential therapeutic effects of BZT analogs related to ADHD. METHODS: Rats responded under a delay-discounting procedure in which responses on on

Female primary and secondary psychopathic variants show distinct endocrine and psychophysiological profiles.

Research with predominantly male samples supports primary and secondary developmental pathways to psychopathy that are phenotypically indistinguishable on aggressive and antisocial behavior. The aim of this study was to examine whether female variants of psychopathy show divergent endocrine (i.e., cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone [DHEA], testosterone, and their ratios) and psychophysiological (i.e., heart rate variability [HRV]) reactivity to social provocation. We also tested whether variants differed on reactive aggression when performing a competitive reaction time task against the fictitio

A Life Span Perspective on Borderline Personality Disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide an update of a life span perspective on borderline personality disorder (BPD). We address the life span course of BPD, and discuss possible implications for assessment, treatment, and research. RECENT FINDINGS: BPD first manifests itself in adolescence and can be distinguished reliably from normal adolescent development. The course of BPD from adolescence to late life is characterized by a symptomatic switch from affective dysregulation, impulsivity, and suicidality to maladaptive interpersonal functioning and enduring functional impairments, with subsequent remi

Improving our understanding of the relationship between emotional abuse and substance use disorders: the mediating roles of negative urgency and posttraumatic stress disorder.

Background: Emotional abuse is associated with an increased risk for substance use disorders (SUDs) as well as with negative urgency and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following a subsequent trauma. Both negative urgency and PTSD are key contributors to the relationship between emotional abuse and SUDs when examined separately. A comprehensive model including both factors can inform models of PTSD-SUD comorbidity. Furthermore, the comparison of these mechanistic roles in emotional versus other types of abuse can shed light on the specificity of these effects. Objectives: The present stud

[Feasibility study of therapeutic exposure in virtual reality for pathological gamblers].

UNLABELLED: The experiment presented is the result of a partnership between the Paris-Nanterre University (CLIPSYD laboratory, EA 4430) and the CSAPA Imagine (Simone Veil Hospital, GH Eaubonne-Montmorency). Virtual reality immersion exposure for pathological gamblers is beneficial in the context of cognitive and behavioral interventions. It can be used to evoke the desire to play and to have access to automatic thoughts and mistaken beliefs of the players when they find themselves in a gambling context. Exposure is used until the urge to play diminishes and disappears which is the process of d

Moderate to severe gambling problems and traumatic brain injury: A population-based study.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common injury characterized by a change in brain function after an external blow to the head and is associated with substance abuse, psychological distress, risk-taking, and impulsivity. Convenience and clinical samples have also linked TBI to problem gambling, but have not ruled out confounding variables such as hazardous drinking and psychological distress. This study examines the relationship between TBI and moderate to severe problem gambling in a general population probability sample controlling for hazardous drinking and psychological distress. The data

Neurophysiological correlates of excitement in men with recent-onset psychosis.

OBJECTIVE: Right frontal function, as indicated by the N200 component of the event-related potential during target detection, has previously been associated with excitement (excitement, impulsivity, hostility, uncooperativeness) in men with a long-term diagnosis of schizophrenia. The current study investigated excitement in relation to N200 in men who had recently experienced their first episode of psychosis. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty men who had recently suffered their first psychotic episode underwent a clinical interview and auditory oddball task. RESULTS: Multiple linear regression an

Vibration and impulsivity analysis of hand held olive beaters.

To provide more effective evaluations of hand arm vibration syndromes caused by hand held olive beaters, this study focused on two aspects: the acceleration measured at the tool pole and the analysis of the impulsivity, using the crest factor. The signals were frequency weighted using the weighting curve Wh as described in the ISO 5349-1 standard. The same source signals were also filtered by the Wh-bl filter (ISO/TS 15694), because the weighting filter Wh (unlike the Wh-bl filter) could underestimate the effect of high frequency vibration on vibration-induced finger disorders. Improving impulse control: using an evidence-based practice approach.

School social workers in a suburban school district implemented a two-year collaboration to identify empirically effective interventions and apply them to their own practice. During the first year of the project, the workers and the consultant discussed the use of evidence-based practice and developed strategies and tools for monitoring and evaluating practice. In the second year, each worker monitored the progress of one student using a standardized intervention. Five social workers completed the project; collected data on outcomes showed improved self-control for all participants. Limits on

Neurobiological correlates of problem gambling in a quasi-realistic blackjack scenario as revealed by fMRI.

In the present study we obtained functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data in occasional gamblers (OG) and problem gamblers (PG) during a quasi-realistic blackjack game. We focused on neuronal correlates of risk assessment and reward processing. Participants had to decide whether to draw or not to draw a card in a high-risk or low-risk blackjack situation. We assumed PG would show differences in prefrontal and ventral striatal brain regions in comparison to OG during risk assessment and due to the winning or losing of money. Although both groups did not differ in behavioral data, blood
