Development of a rapid detection method for patch thickness based on machine vision and near infrared spectroscopy: a case study of curcumin patch.

Patches represent a significant dosage form within transdermal drug delivery systems. In the quality control of transdermal patches, thickness not only affects the drug loading per unit area and drug release behavior but also is associated with patient usability and product stability. Targeting curcumin patch, a method used for thickness distribution monitoring utilizing machine vision coupled with near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was proposed. Twenty-nine batches of patches were prepared via the central composite design. The RGB color space data were extracted from the captured images of all

"Radiobiometrics": Deep-learning radiograph biometrics for patient identification.

When reporting on radiology follow-up examinations, radiologists should ensure that follow-up images and reference images are from the same patient to prevent misidentification errors. This is a nontrivial task when accounting for changes in the patient's condition and differences in image acquisition. Thus, we developed a system for automatic patient identification from radiographs using convolutional neural networks. Using deep metric learning, we trained multiple models to match radiographs of the chest, knees, pelvis, and hands. We also trained a model to match chest radiographs of multipl

Mechanistic insight into the selective detection of dopamine using a copper ferrite-based nanocomposite, supported by a machine learning approach.

Painless and instant analysis of neurotransmitters from an abandoned body fluid, like urine, would facilitate point-of-care (PoC) detection of several neurological disorders. As a step towards developing a non-invasive, fast, and PoC analytical tool for detecting urinary catecholamines, planar electrochemical sensors have been modified with a spinel ferrite-based nanocomposite comprising copper ferrite (CF) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and subsequently used for selective detection of dopamine in simulated urine. The sensors exhibited dopamine sensitivity in the range of 0.1-300 μM with 74

Focal cortical dysplasia detection by artificial intelligence using MRI: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is a common cause of pharmacoresistant epilepsy. However, it can be challenging to detect FCD using MRI alone. This study aimed to review and analyze studies that used machine learning and artificial neural networks (ANN) methods as an additional tool to enhance MRI findings in FCD patients. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in four databases (Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science). The quality of the studies was assessed using QUADAS-AI, and a bivariate random-effects model was used for analysis. The main outcome analyzed was the sensitiv

Enhancing Real-World Fall Detection Using Commodity Devices: A Systematic Study.

The widespread adoption of smartphones and smartwatches has enabled non-intrusive fall detection through built-in sensors and on-device computation. While these devices are widely used by older adults, existing systems still struggle to accurately detect soft falls in real-world settings. There is a notable drop in performance when fall-detection models trained offline on labeled accelerometer data are deployed and tested in real-world conditions using streaming, real-time data. To address this, our experimental study investigates whether incorporating additional sensor modalities, specificall

Deep Learning-based Brain Age Prediction Using MRI to Identify Fetuses with Cerebral Ventriculomegaly.

Fetal ventriculomegaly (VM) and its severity and associated central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities are important indicators of high risk for impaired neurodevelopmental outcomes. Recently, a novel fetal brain age prediction method using a two-dimensional (2D) single-channel convolutional neural network (CNN) with multiplanar MRI sections showed the potential to detect fetuses with VM. This study examines the diagnostic performance of a deep learning-based fetal brain age prediction model to distinguish fetuses with VM (n = 317) from typically developing fetuses (n = 183), the severity of V

A Deep Learning Approach for Classifying Developmental Stages of Ixodes ricinus Ticks on Images Captured Using a Microscope's High-Resolution CMOS Sensor.

This article presents a deep learning approach for classifying the developmental stages (larvae, nymphs, adult females, and adult males) of Ixodes ricinus ticks, the most common tick species in Europe and a major vector of tick-borne pathogens, including Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV). Each developmental stage plays a different role in disease transmission, with nymphs considered the most epidemiologically relevant stage due to their small size and high prevalence. We developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) model trained on a da

Population coding of time-varying sounds in the nonlemniscal inferior colliculus.

The inferior colliculus (IC) of the midbrain is important for complex sound processing, such as discriminating conspecific vocalizations and human speech. The IC's nonlemniscal, dorsal "shell" region is likely important for this process, as neurons in these layers project to higher-order thalamic nuclei that subsequently funnel acoustic signals to the amygdala and nonprimary auditory cortices, forebrain circuits important for vocalization coding in a variety of mammals, including humans. However, the extent to which shell IC neurons transmit acoustic features necessary to discern vocalizations
