Bisphenol A (BPA) is a 'weak' endocrine disruptor. The effect of BPA on human reproduction is controversial but has been related to meiotic anomalies, recurrent spontaneous abortion, abnormal karyotypes, the diminishing of oocyte survival, delay in meiotic progression and an elevated rate of MLH1 foci in vitro. The aim of this study is to characterize the gene expression of human fetal oocytes in culture as well as to evaluate the effect of BPA in cultured human oocytes. To accomplish our objective, 12 ovaries from 6 euploid fetuses were used. The ovarian fetal tissue was cultivated in two gro

The acute and chronic toxicity of bisphenol A (BPA) was evaluated on the common South American toad Rhinella arenarum embryos and larvae by means of continuous and pulse exposure treatments. Embryos were treated continuously from early blastula (S.4) up to complete operculum (S.25), during early larval stages and by means of 24 h pulse exposures of BPA in concentrations ranging between 1.25 and 40 mg L(-1) , in order to evaluate the susceptibility to this compound in different developmental stages. For lethal effects, S.25 was the most sensitive and gastrula was the most resistant to BPA. The

Evidence from experimental studies suggests that fetal exposure to the endocrine-disrupting chemical bisphenol A (BPA) has adverse reproductive effects in both males and females. Studies from our laboratory suggest that exposure to the developing female fetus produces a unique, multigenerational effect. Specifically, maternal exposure affects the earliest stages of oogenesis in the developing fetal ovary, and the resulting subtle meiotic defects increase the likelihood that embryos produced by the exposed female in adulthood (i.e., the grandchildren) will be chromosomally abnormal. Increased occurrence of reproductive disorders has raised concerns regarding the impact of endocrine-disrupting chemicals on reproductive health, especially when such exposure occurs during fetal life. Prenatal testosterone (T) treatment leads to growth retardation, postnatal hypergonadotropism, compromised estradiol-positive feedback, polycystic ovaries, and infertility in the adult. Prenatal dihydrotestosterone treatment failed to affect ovarian morphology or estradiol-positive feedback, suggesting that effects of prenatal T may be facilitated via conversion of T to estradiol, thus raising c

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an important chemical in the production of epoxy resins and polycarbonate plastics, and basic monomers which are used for a variety of applications. Consumer exposure to BPA may be possible from migration of BPA from dental sealants or from polycarbonate or epoxy-lined food and drink containers. BPA is known to act as weak estrogen mimic in rodents, and there is a concern of adverse endocrine effects, especially from prenatal exposure to this potential 'endocrine disruptor'. To address this concern, we have studied the disposition and transplacental transfer of BPA in preg

Separation of monomeric constituents of ethoxylated bisphenol A (BIS-EMA) with between 2 and 15 ethoxy groups per phenol in the molecule was investigated with micellar electrokinetic chromatography at different volume percentages methanol in the background electrolyte (10 mM sodium dodecylsulfate, 100 mM borate-50 mM phosphate buffer, pH 7.0). The conditions allowed the differentiation of the lower from the higher BIS-EMA homologues and of isomers, and enabled the characterisation of commercial dental composite materials. The decay curve for the light induced radical polymerisation of BIS-EMA

To investigate human exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), a widely used endocrine disruptor, we measured serum BPA concentrations and analyzed the interrelation of BPA with sex-related hormones. BPA was detected in all human sera by a novel enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Serum BPA concentrations were significantly higher in normal men (1.49 +/- 0.11 ng/ml; P < 0.01) and in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (1.04 +/- 0.10 ng/ml; P < 0.05) compared with normal women (0.64 +/- 0.10 ng/ml). There were significant positive correlations between serum BPA and total testosterone (r = 0.595, P < 0.001

BACKGROUND: In utero exposure to bisphenols, widely used in consumer products, may alter lung development and increase the risk of respiratory morbidity in the offspring. However, evidence is scarce and mostly focused on bisphenol A (BPA) only.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations of in utero exposure to BPA, bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol S (BPS) with asthma, wheeze, and lung function in school-age children, and whether these associations differ by sex.
METHODS: We included 3,007 mother-child pairs from eight European birth cohorts. Bisphenol concentrations were determined in maternal u…

BACKGROUND: Bisphenols, as ubiquitous environmental contaminants, pose significant public health concerns owing to their endocrine-disrupting properties. While liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry is the gold standard for their trace-level quantification in biological matrices, its accuracy is fundamentally limited by substantial matrix effects. The development of separation techniques and analytical method for human biomonitoring will significantly advance human health risk assessment. The complexity of biological matrices and low concentrations of targets are the main challenges fo…

As daily essentials for skin protection and cosmetic enhancement, personal care products (PCPs) are used extensively worldwide. Due to their direct and prolonged contact with the skin, any hazardous ingredients they contain warrant serious attention. Although bisphenols (BPs) and alkylphenols (APs) are of growing concern for their known or potential endocrine-disrupting effects, most research has targeted food, water, and environmental samples, with comparatively few methods available for their analysis in PCPs. To assess the occurrence and potential risks of such substances in PCPs, this stud…

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widely produced chemical worldwide found in numerous everyday products. Its endocrine-disrupting properties and omnipresence have aroused concern and led to several restrictions on its use. These restrictions and growing public awareness about the toxicity of BPA have resulted in market products labeled "BPA-free", with BPAs often being replaced by other bisphenols. This is why constant biomonitoring of bisphenol levels in various body fluids and tissues is essential. In this study, we propose the use of simple, cost-effective high-performance liquid chromatography coupl…

Bisphenol A (BPA), a widespread environmental endocrine disruptor, can cross the blood-brain barrier and exert neurotoxic effects closely associated with depression pathogenesis. However, the precise molecular targets and signaling pathways mediating BPA-induced depression remain poorly understood. This study integrated network toxicology, molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulation, GEO transcriptomic dataset analysis, and in vivo experimental validation in mice to systematically investigate the potential toxicological targets and underlying mechanisms of BPA in depression. BPA-related t

Bisphenol A (BPA), a common industrial chemical used in plastics and consumer products, is increasingly detected in aquatic environments, raising serious concerns about its potential ecological impacts. This study evaluated the sublethal and acute toxic effects of BPA on the freshwater planarian Girardia tigrina, a recognized model for neurotoxicity and regenerative biology. Acute exposure revealed a time-dependent decrease in LC50 values, from 53.18 μM at 24 h to 22.38 μM at 96 h. Behavioral assays showed significant locomotor impairment, with activity reduced by 36.7% and 57.2% at 1.0 and 5.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and vanadium are industrial chemicals known to disrupt hormones and cause neurotoxicity. BPA is commonly found in food packaging and poses risks to human health through various exposure routes, while vanadium exposure can occur near power plants. Both chemicals induce oxidative stress, disrupt neurotransmission, and cause neuronal damage, yet research on their combined effects is limited. To examine the behavioral, neurochemical, and neurohistological changes associated with co-exposure to BPA and vanadium, we utilized 40 male BALB/c mice, divided into four groups: the contro

Bisphenol A (BPA), is a xenoestrogen used in plastic manufacturing companies. Some countries are limiting the use of BPA. The widespread use of BPA has resulted in its accumulation in the natural environment. This compound is extensively utilised in various industrial products and is linked to harmful effects on both wildlife and human health. In recent years, extensive research has focused on ferroptosis-an iron-dependent form of programmed cell death characterised by lipid peroxidation. Also, several studies highlight the involvement of ferroptosis in mediating the toxic effects of environme
