The authors evaluated the short-term results of stabilization operations of the lumbar spine by means of a glass-ceramics replacement of the intervertebral disc in a group of 25 patients. Indication for operation was monosegmental instability or spondylolisthesis grade I in the lumbar spine with progressing clinical symptoms. From 1975 to 1980, total ankle arthroplasty was performed using a metal and polyethylene prosthesis on 30 ankles in 28 patients with painful arthritis. However, because loosening and sinking of the prosthesis were significant, a ceramic total prosthesis was designed in 1980 to be used without cement. This study was performed to evaluate the histological changes during remodelling of autogenous PMCB (particulate marrow and cancellous bone) and TCPC (beta-tricalcium phosphate ceramic) when transplanted into the jaw bone defects, and also to investigate the possibility of orthodontic tooth movement on them.
