Objectives were to review the evidence of cardiovascular effects of carbon disulfide (CS2) on exposed workers from different cohort studies. Databases searched included MEDLINE, TOXLINE, and OSHtM Database (CD-ROM). Reference lists of reports and reviews were also searched. In the framework of an extensive health survey of viscose rayon workers in Belgium, 187 workers underwent a neuropsychological examination. Of these, 120 had been exposed for at least a year to carbon disulfide (CS&inf2;) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and 67 served as a non-exposed control group. One hundred sixteen male viscose rayon workers exposed to carbon disulfide and 79 other workers, who were not exposed to any toxic agent in the working environment, were asked about their sexual behavior and reproductive record. Forty-three exposed and 35 nonexposed men provided a semen sample. The relationship with occupational exposure was analyzed with univariate and multivariate methods. The results indicate a significant effect of carbon disulfide exposure on libido and potency, but no effects were noted on fertility nor on semen quality.

A comparative study was carried out between the divisions of one of the viscose industry plants where workers carry on shift work in CS2 exposure and shift workers of a wool industry plant--in the same town--with no chemical exposure.
