Intrathecal ligaments and nerve root tension: possible sources of lumbar pain during spaceflight.

UNLABELLED: Lumbar intrathecal ligaments have recently been demonstrated to randomly bind dorsal nerve roots to the dura within the lumbar vertebral column. Lengthening of the vertebral column and associated lumbar back pain experienced by astronauts is common in microgravity. This study was designed to investigate the relationship of lumbar intrathecal ligaments in spinal lengthening as a possible mechanism for back pain. METHODS: A two-part study was designed using 36 vertebral columns from embalmed cadavers. There were 12 vertebral columns studied in mid-sagittal section to demonstrate the

Insertion of the tendon of the tibialis anterior muscle in feet with and without hallux valgus.

The insertion of the tendon of the tibialis anterior muscle may be related to pathologic changes of the foot and, in particular, hallux valgus. Morphologic data should enable evaluation of such a relationship and perhaps offer a basis for improved therapy. One hundred fifty-six embalmed feet, including 27 with hallux valgus, were examined. The tendon of the tibialis anterior muscle was dissected and measurements were made, including the width of the insertion on the first metatarsal and medial cuneiform. Distal-superficial and proximal-deep slips of the tendon twisted around each other. Two sp

Tomography versus computed tomography for assessing step off in intraarticular distal radial fractures.

Computed tomography scans have supplanted conventional tomography for many applications and often are considered the imaging study of choice for assessing intraarticular distal radial fractures. Concern about cost containment in healthcare delivery prompts the question of whether the two studies provide comparable information and at what cost. Common intraarticular distal radial fractures were created in 12 lightly embalmed cadaveric specimens. The fractures were fixed with radiolucent Kirschner wires. Articular step off was measured with a caliper. Plain radiographs, computed tomography scans

Morphology of the torn rotator cuff.

The morphological characteristics of shoulders with torn rotator cuffs were determined using 41 embalmed specimens. The following parameters were measured in the supraspinatus (SSP), infraspinatus (ISP) and subscapularis (SSC) muscles: the length, thickness and width of the extramuscular tendon; the length of the intramuscular tendon; the length and width of a tear, if present, muscle fibre length; and muscle volume. The cross-sectional area (CSA) of the tendon was measured on the photographic image of slices of the tendon using an image analysis system, and the CSA of the muscle was calculate

The caudal commencement of the azygos and hemiazygos veins revisited: They are not a direct continuation of the ascending lumbar veins.

BACKGROUND: Contradictory information concerning the formation of the azygos and hemiazygos veins and their relation to the diaphragm is given in anatomical textbooks. Often, they are described to be a direct continuation of the right resp. left ascending lumbar veins. The aim of this study was to re-evaluate their caudal commencement and course. We hypothesize that both veins originate from several tributaries and are not a direct continuation of the ascending lumbar veins. METHODS: 20 formalin-embalmed human anatomic specimens were dissected. Caudal commencement and relation to the diaphrag

Anatomical variations of the external obturator muscle and their impact on injectate spread to the obturator canal: a cadaveric study related to ultrasound-guided proximal obturator nerve block.

We anatomically investigated whether the superior fasciculus (SF) of the external obturator muscle (EOM) influences the spread of dye into the obturator canal, in a cadaveric model simulating a proximal ultrasound-guided obturator nerve block. Thirteen sides from seven Thiel-embalmed cadavers (five male cadavers, nine sides; two female cadavers, four sides) were studied. Blue dye was injected either between the pectineus muscle and the EOM, the pectineus muscle and the SF, or the SF and the main belly of the EOM. After injection, gross dissection was performed to evaluate dye spread along the

Comparative analyses of the color hue and stiffness properties of organ specimens fixed by immersion into formalin solution and ethylene glycol-methanol-phenol mixture.

When applying embalmed cadavers and organ specimens to gross anatomy practice and surgical training, their qualitative properties serve as important functional indices of how closely they resemble the living state. Among these properties, color hue and stiffness change remarkably after fixation. In the present study, we evaluated the properties of rat organs, including the brain, lung, liver, and skeletal muscle, after fixation by immersion in a 10% formalin solution and a non-formalin fixative, ethylene glycol-methanol-phenol (EMP) mixture. The colorimetric L*a*b* values, which are indicators

Anatomical study of the dorsal scapular artery in cadavers and its clinical significance.

The dorsal scapular artery (DSA) is one of the key arteries supplying the muscles of the upper back, along with the Suprascapular artery and the Subscapular artery. It lies close to the brachial plexus, making its variations important during regional blocks and flap surgeries. Variations in its origin, course, and relationships in different population groups, as well as its surgical and anaesthetic significance, emphasise its need for study. This descriptive study was performed following a standard dissection manual on 40 bilateral sides of embalmed human cadavers. The origin of the DSA was id

Transverse Facial Artery Morphometry Based on Head Dimensions and Palpable Anatomical Landmarks.

BACKGROUND: The transverse facial artery (TFA) is a key vascular structure supplying the lateral region of the face. Because of its central location, the artery is vulnerable to transection during lateral facial rejuvenation and other invasive facial procedures. OBJECTIVES: The authors of this study aim to determine the location of the TFA origin relative to 2 palpable bony landmarks: the head of the mandible and the upper border of the zygomatic arch. METHODS: Thirty hemifaces from 15 embalmed cadaveric heads were examined. Two palpable landmarks-the upper border of the zygomatic arch and t

Anatomical Study of the Angular Branch of the Thoracodorsal Artery and the Lateral Border of the Scapula With Application to Reconstructive Surgery.

The angular artery is a branch of the thoracodorsal artery, which is the terminal branch of the subscapular artery and is known to supply the inferior angle of the scapula. The lack of detailed anatomical research and clinical outcome studies hinders the ability to fully exploit the use of this artery and the scapula it supplies. Addressing such knowledge gaps through focused anatomical studies and large-scale clinical trials will enhance the understanding and utilization of the angular branch in surgical practice, ultimately improving patient outcomes. Seven sides (five on the left sides and

Revisiting the metacarpophalangeal joint: comparison of ultrasound tissue patterns with its anatomical, histological, and immunohistochemical features.

This study aimed to identify the structures and tissues of the dorsal aspect of the metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ) using ultrasound, with gross anatomy as a comparator and learning source. In addition, the composition of several MCPJ tissues was investigated by histology and immunohistochemistry. The study comprised 3 steps. First, 4 rheumatologist ultrasonographers identified on B-mode imaging the tissue patterns of the structures in the dorsal aspect of the MCPJ in fresh-frozen cadaveric hands. In the second step, 2 anatomists performed dissections on fresh-frozen and embalmed cadaveric han

C2-P2 Bypass: Technical Assessment of Petrous Carotid Artery to Posterior Cerebral Artery Interpositional Bypass Through the Combined Transcochlear-Subtemporal Approach as a Part of Microsurgical Treatment for Dolichoectatic Vertebrobasilar Artery Aneurysms.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Managing dolichoectatic vertebrobasilar artery aneurysms requires a multifaceted approach. Revascularization of the posterior circulation with a high-flow bypass is part of the flow reversal paradigm. Performing a robust high-flow bypass and addressing the aneurysm through the same approach smooths the operative intervention. This study assessed the anatomic feasibility of accessing the basilar trunk and aneurysm simultaneously to revascularize the posterior circulation using a petrous internal carotid artery (pICA)-posterior cerebral artery (PCA) interpositional byp
