Dislocated ankle fractures represent a common presenting pathology at US emergency departments, and several different procedural and anesthetic techniques are employed for attempted closed reduction of these injuries. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the frequency of and factors associated with success in the closed reduction of dislocated ankle fractures. A diagnostic code search produced 1050 ankle fractures presenting to an urban US level-1 emergency department. These medical records were interrogated and first categorized into whether or not a closed reduction was attemp

BACKGROUND: The isolated fourth metacarpal neck fracture is uncommon, and the appropriate management is still debatable. The aim of this retrospective study was to introduce a closed reduction and percutaneously intermetacarpal K-wire fixation external technique to treat the isolated fourth metacarpal neck fracture.
METHODS: From October 2013 to January 2018, 21 patients with closed-isolated fourth metacarpal neck fractures (angulation ≥35°, rotation ≥5°, or shortening ≥5 mm) were treated with the closed reduction and percutaneous intermetacarpal and external fixation technique. Total active

INTRODUCTION: Surgical treatment of medial malleolus (MM) fractures can be performed through open or percutaneous approaches, although comparisons between these two approaches have not been undertaken. In this study, we compared patients with MM fractures treated with closed reduction and percutaneous fixation (CRPF) with patients treated with traditional open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF).
METHODS: A group of 165 consecutive patients underwent surgical fixation of a closed MM fracture from 2011 to 2015 at a single institution. Thirty-one underwent CRPF and 134 underwent ORIF. Patien

Pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures are the most commonly encountered type of elbow fractures in children that require surgical fixation. Many pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures can be treated with closed reduction and percutaneous skeletal fixation. In difficult fractures, adjunct pin techniques, such as joystick wires and leverage pins, can be used to help attain a satisfactory and stable reduction before an open approach is used. After the fracture is reduced, optimal pinning, with the use of either crossed or lateral-entry techniques, and fixation that achieves maximal spread

We studied the outcome of minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis (MIPPO) using locking plate for closed fractures of distal tibia in a consecutive study consisting of 25 patients. Preoperative variables were age of patient, mode of trauma, type of fracture, and soft tissue status. Postoperative variables included wound status, time to union, return to activity, and AO foot and ankle score. After 1 year, all the fractures had united. The average time to union was 16.8 weeks. There were two cases of superficial infection. We also had two cases of deep infection, which required remo

The study was performed to evaluate and compare the results of open and closed treatments of diacapitular fractures of the mandible. Following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) 14 patients with 15 displaced condylar fractures, which had caused a shortening of the mandibular ramus, were examined clinically (Helkimo index), radiologically (Orthopantomogram, Clementschitsch [reversed Towne's] view, Submentovertex view) and axiographically (CARDIAX). These findings were compared to a group of 29 patients with 34 similar condylar fractures which had been treated using closed techniques. F

Surgical management of two-part and three-part proximal humerus fractures is difficult and requires familiarity with more than one method of fixation. Poor bone quality, comminution, and the deforming forces of the rotator cuff on the tuberosities influence the choice of operative approach and fixation techniques. Closed reductions and percutaneous pinning offer the potential advantage of minimal soft-tissue dissection; however, good bone quality and minimal comminution are prerequisites. Selected two-part surgical neck fractures and valgus-impacted fractures lend themselves well to this techn

The authors retrospectively studied 35 articular fractures of the base of the first metacarpal, with an average follow-up of 3 years. Treatment consisted of closed reduction and pinning in 19 cases, open reduction and rigid fixation in 16 cases. Results were estimated in terms of pain, range of movement (flexion-adduction arc and abduction-extension arc), strength and X-rays. There was no significant difference between the two groups, for age, sex, occupation, side and postoperative care. Only one significant difference between both procedures was found: flexion-adduction was better after oste

In non-articular fractures of the base of the base of the first metacarpal, this technique permits firm fixation, and immediate mobilization, with an excellent result. It consists of the insertion of two Kirschner wires, on either side, from the neck to the base of the first metacarpal, while reducing the fracture without opening. Two front and side view X-Rays control the correct reduction and position of the wires, which are cut under the skin closure. When making the two lateral incisions, it is very important to avoid injuring the two dorsal branches of the radial nerve. The Kirschner wire

Closed type III phalangeal neck fractures with 180-degree rotation is a rare iatrogenic injury that occurs following failed attempts at closed reduction. Prior to closed reduction, the phalangeal head is in 90-degree rotation. Longitudinal traction during closed reduction then converts the deformity into 180-degree rotation. We present the first documented noniatrogenic case of phalangeal neck fracture with 180-degree rotation that was also associated with a displaced Salter-Harris II fracture at the same joint. The blood supply of the phalangeal head in that scenario is discussed along with p

We studied twenty-five consecutive patients who had a closed tibial fracture to determine whether there was a relationship between compartment pressure and the distance at which the pressure was measured from the site of the fracture. Tissue pressure was measured in all four compartments of the leg at the level of the fracture and at five-centimeter increments proximal and distal to the fracture. The peak pressure was usually found at the level of the fracture and was always located within five centimeters of the fracture. The highest pressures were recorded in the anterior and the deep poster

INTRODUCTION: Type II distal clavicle fractures are associated with significant displacement and high rates of nonunion. Due to the risk of nonunion, these fractures are most often managed operatively soon after the injury.
CASE REPORT: We present an 84-year-old male who sustained a Type II closed distal clavicle fracture that converted to an open fracture 1 month following initial injury. The patient underwent surgical repair with open reduction internal fixation and coracoclavicular ligament reconstruction. Following surgery, the patient experienced hardware failure with nonunion. He did no

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the need for clinical evaluation with radiographs within 10 days of closed reduction and percutaneous pinning for the treatment of displaced supracondylar humerus fractures. Between May 1 and December 31, 2001, the authors evaluated the complications with closed reduction and percutaneous pinning of 104 displaced supracondylar humerus fractures. Fifty-two of the patients had the initial follow-up examination with radiographs 10 days or less after pinning; the other 52 patients had the initial follow-up examination with radiographs either after 10 days

PURPOSE: The use of intraoperative imaging (IOI) to improve the reduction adequacy of zygomatic arch (ZMA) fractures has been reported, but few systematic reviews have examined this topic. The aim of this review was to investigate and compare the value of IOI with conventional methods without IOI (N-IOI) for the closed reduction of ZMA fractures.
METHODS: Electronic retrieval of MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, and citation search until December 2, 2022, was used to identify controlled clinical trials that employed IOI for improving adequacy in closed reduction of ZM
