Biological removal of dichloromethane (DCM) from pharmaceutical industry is limited by its recalcitrance. In this study, an airlift packing reactor (ALPR), which combined the suspended and fixed-film microbial growth system, was set up to remove DCM and co-existed toluene. The removal performance of the ALPR for DCM was greater than traditional airlift reactor (ALR). The maximum elimination capacity (ECmax) of the ALPR for DCM reached 108 g m-3 h-1 with removal efficiency (RE) of 41%, increased by 145% if compared to the ALR. Sludge drying gases (SDG), evolving from drying and mild thermal decomposition (<300°C) of raw sewage sludge contain NH3 and SO2 as well as other N- and S-compounds. All of these are potential PCDD/Fs suppressants. Prior to the start of supportive therapy at the site of the accident, arterial blood samples from 47 patients with acute head injury were taken for blood gas analysis. At the same time, the degree of unconsciousness was assessed using the Glasgow-Coma-Scale. Arterial blood samples were taken from adult healthy patients before and 24 hours after bilateral nasal packing. The blood samples were investigated for PO2, PCO2, HCO3, pH and Hb. It was found that there is (i) an increase of high significance of PCO2 and HCO3-, (ii)) a significant increase of percentage of Hb., (iii) a highly significant decrease of PO2 in patients after nasal packing; (iv) as regards the pH, no significant difference was found. What we suggest is that bilateral anterior nasal pack results in hypoxia and hypercapnia due to hypoventilation.
