To establish a useful animal model of Itai-Itai disease (IID) of humans, we conducted the following experiments. Experiment 1: Toxic effects of Cd were compared between ovariectomized (OX) and non-OX rats after daily, intravenous injection of cadmium (Cd) chloride for 14 days. In this experiment, we demonstrated that OX rats were more susceptible to Cd-induced nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity than non-OX rats. OBJECTIVE: To determine the existence of hepatocyte-like cells in the human foetal pancreas.
STUDY DESIGN: Foetal pancreas was examined in parallel with two experimental models involving pancreatic tissue regeneration. Foetal pancreases (n = 20; 10 to 18 weeks) were obtained from spontaneous abortions and were histologically examined using haematoxylin-eosin and PAS staining. Tissues from food-deprived and copper-deficient female Wistar rats were studied following D-penicillamine administration, and tissue from female hamsters was evaluated following administration of a pancreatic carcinogen.

For the objective and valid identification of different human regulatory phenotypes it should be useful to analyze the behavior of different regulatory subsystems (Anochin 1976) in one multivariate design. Therefore in a DARA supported project a fully computerized and reliable laboratory assessment was developed and tested. We used a set of electrophysiological parameters that should indicate the activity of different functional regulation systems on different "behavioral levels". Skin conductance, skin temperature and voice pitch were used as indicators of sympathico-parasympathical activity.

This study describes the structural features of the interface between microbial deposits and root cementum in actively progressing root-surface caries lesions developed experimentally in six elderly individuals. Class V cavities were prepared at the amelo-cementum junction in sixty-eight extracted human teeth. Fifty-one were filled with glass ionomer cement (ASPA). UNLABELLED: The pathogenesis of endothelial corneal dystrophies involves disruption of the natural balance between fluid influx into and efflux from the corneal stroma. Regulation of fluid transport across the endothelial layer in vivo is primarily associated with the activity of sodium-potassium pumps.
