Simple oral mucosal epithelial transplantation in a rabbit model.

This study investigated a rabbit model of autologous simple oral mucosal epithelium transplantation (SOMET) for limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). LSCD was created in the SOMET group and the Control group. In the SOMET group, oral mucosa harvested from the buccal region was treated with dispase, cut into small pieces, and placed on the exposed corneal stroma without using graft sutures, amniotic membrane, and/or glue. A soft contact lens was positioned and tarsorrhaphy was performed in both groups. Postoperative corneal neovascularization and fluorescein staining scores were evaluated by slit

Application of in vivo laser scanning confocal microscopy for evaluation of ocular surface diseases: lessons learned from pterygium, meibomian gland disease, and chemical burns.

In vivo laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) has been widely used to evaluate the alterations caused by ocular surface diseases at a cellular level in the living eye. In this review, we focus on its use in the diagnosis of pterygium, meibomian gland (MG) disease, and chemical burns. Histopathologic changes occurring in pterygium can be examined in situ using in vivo LSCM. Alterations at the junction of the pterygium and the cornea, which cannot be observed in excised tissue samples, can be observed. MGs play an important role in maintaining the health of the ocular surface. Meibomian glan

Autophagy mediates cell cycle response by regulating nucleocytoplasmic transport of PAX6 in limbal stem cells under ultraviolet-A stress.

Limbal stem cells (LSC) account for homeostasis and regeneration of corneal epithelium. Solar ultraviolet A (UVA) is the major source causing oxidative damage in the ocular surface. Autophagy, a lysosomal degradation mechanism, is essential for physiologic function and stress defense of stem cells. PAX6, a master transcription factor governing corneal homeostasis by regulating cell cycle and cell fate of LSC, responds to oxidative stress by nucleocytoplasmic shuttling. Impaired autophagy and deregulated PAX6 have been reported in oxidative stress-related ocular surface disorders. We hypothesiz

Impact of Exposomes on Ocular Surface Diseases.

Ocular surface diseases (OSDs) are significant causes of ocular morbidity, and are often associated with chronic inflammation, redness, irritation, discomfort, and pain. In severe OSDs, loss of vision can result from ocular surface failure, characterised by limbal stem cell deficiencies, corneal vascularisation, corneal opacification, and surface keratinisation. External and internal exposomes are measures of environmental factors that individuals are exposed to, and have been increasingly studied for their impact on ocular surface diseases. External exposomes consist of external environmental

Topical tacrolimus for allergic eye diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The spectrum of allergic eye diseases includes a variety of conditions, each characterized by complex immunopathologies.Antiallergic drugs, such as antihistamines and mast cell stabilizers, are often insufficient without concomitant topical corticosteroid treatment. The chronic course of the more severe allergic eye diseases, such as vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC), limits the treatment with topical corticosteroids to short courses. In addition, topical corticosteroid treatment puts patients at high risk of developing severe ocular com

Finite Element Analysis of Cornea and Lid Wiper during Blink, with and without Contact Lens.

Ocular surface disorders such as Lid Wiper Epitheliopathy (LWE), Superior Epithelial Arcuate Lesion (SEAL), and contact lens-induced Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency (LSCD) as well as Superior Limbic Keratoconjunctivitis (SLK) affect one's quality of life. Hence, it is imperative to investigate the underlying causes of these ocular surface disorders. During blink, the undersurface of the eyelid tends to interact with the cornea and the conjunctiva. The presence of a contact lens can add to the biomechanical frictional changes on these surfaces. To estimate these changes with and without a contact l

Ocular Manifestations in Patients Affected by p63-Associated Disorders: Ectrodactyly-Ectodermal Dysplasia-Clefting (EEC) and Ankyloblepharon-Ectodermal Defects-Cleft Lip Palate (AEC) Syndromes.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The Ectrodactyly-Ectodermal dysplasia-Clefting (EEC) and Ankyloblepharon-ectodermal defect-cleft lip/palate (AEC) syndromes are rare autosomal dominant diseases caused by heterozygous mutations in the p63 gene. Patients are characterized by abnormalities of the skin, teeth, and hair and have limb defects, orofacial clefting and ectodermal dysplasia. In addition, they often show ocular surface alterations, leading to progressive corneal clouding and eventually blindness. Here, we present 8 cases describing patients affected by EEC (n = 6, with 5 sporadic and 1 familial cases) a
