A novel 3D-printed implant system for mandibular reconstruction (IPS® MotionPlate) - a finite element analysis.

After continuity resection of the jaw, free bony flaps are used for reconstruction. Despite implementation of a digital workflow and additively manufactured custom-made implants for flap fixation, plate complications such as bony non-union remain a clinical challenge. This is the first description of the finite element analysis of a novel 3D-printed implant system for mandibular reconstruction designed to overcome this limitation. Virtual surgical planning and patient-specific finite element analysis were performed in 12 cases requiring segmental mandibulotomy. The novel custom-made implants (

Biomechanical analysis of costochondral graft fracture in temporomandibular joint replacement.

This study is the first attempt to explore the reason of costochondral graft fracture after lengthy mandible advancement and bilateral coronoidectomy by combining finite element analysis and mechanical test. Eleven groups of models were established to simulate costochondral graft reconstruction in different degrees of mandible advancement, ranging from 0 to 20 mm, in 2 mm increment. Force and stress distribution in the rib-cartilage area were analyzed by finite element analysis. Mechanical test was used to evaluate the resistance of the rib-cartilage complex. Results showed a sharp increase in

Giant hemangiopericytoma of mandible: a propos of a case: a variant of the surgical technique for protection of the articular fosse.

The hemangiopericytoma is a tumor of the pericytes. It represents 1% of vascular tumors. It is frequently located in inferior limbs, the pelvis, and the retroperitoneum. A painless mass of slow growth is main presentation. Imaging is not specific. Only microscopic and immunohistochemical findings can verify the lesion. The surgical treatment is elective. The search of the world medical literature revealed the publication of only four cases of hemangiopericytoma of the jaw. We present the case of a patient with a giant hemangiopericytoma that originated in the jaw. Studies showed an enormous ma

Subperiosteal Implant Application in Full-Jaw Reconstruction for Severely Atrophic Ridge: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: In cases of severe jaw atrophy, conventional implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitation is often limited by insufficient bone volume and the need for extensive grafting procedures. These challenges can restrict prosthetic design and compromise functional outcomes. Customized subperiosteal implants, designed to fit directly over the existing bone surface, offer an alternative approach that enables full-arch prosthetic reconstruction without bone augmentation. METHODS: A patient with severe maxillary and mandibular atrophy underwent full-arch rehabilitation using a customized subpe

Protocol for Single-Stage Bilateral Temporomandibular Joint Replacement Using Intraoperative Navigation in Patients With Ankylosis.

Treatment of patients with bilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis in a single-stage procedure can be challenging. The implementation of intraoperative navigation has proved beneficial by enabling faster and safer excision by providing real-time identification of vital structures. Navigation also can be used to verify site preparation for custom joint prostheses. This article seeks to establish a protocol, based on the use of intermaxillary fixation screws, to produce accurate and repeatable outcomes for the correction of bilateral TMJ ankylosis with total joint replacement in a sing

Customized reconstruction of an extensive mandibular defect: A clinical report.

Myoepithelial carcinomas are rare malignant tumors arising from salivary glands. They most commonly involve the parotid and minor salivary glands but may also occur in the submandibular glands. These tumors can become extensive, causing bony expansion and destruction. A 31-year-old man with a large swelling on the left side of the face is presented. Histologic examination of an incisional biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of a myoepithelial carcinoma arising from the left submandibular salivary gland. After tumor resection, the patient's mandible was reconstructed with a customized mandibular frame
