Whole-exome sequencing identified compound heterozygous variants in ROR2 gene in a fetus with Robinow syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Autosomal recessive Robinow syndrome (ARRS) is a rare genetic disorder, which affects the development of multiple systems, particularly the bones. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic cause of a ARRS fetus and to evaluate the reliability of whole-exome sequencing (WES) in prenatal diagnosis on cases with indistinguishable multiple malformation. METHODS: Clinical and ultrasonic evaluations were conducted on the fetus, and multiplatform genetic techniques were used to identify the variation responsible for RS. The pathogenicity of the novel variation was

Cryogel scaffolds from patient-specific 3D-printed molds for personalized tissue-engineered bone regeneration in pediatric cleft-craniofacial defects.

Bone defects are extremely common in children with cleft-craniofacial conditions, especially those with alveolar cleft defects and cranial defects. This study used patient-specific 3D-printed molds derived from computed tomography and cryogel scaffold fabrication as a proof of concept for the creation of site-specific implants for bone reconstruction. Cryogel scaffolds are unique tissue-engineered constructs formed at sub-zero temperatures. When thawed, the resulting structure is macroporous, sponge-like, and mechanically durable. Due to these unique properties, cryogels have excellent potenti

Unilateral zygomatic hypoplasia correction by L-shaped zygomatic osteotomy with natural coral.

PURPOSE: Zygomatic osteotomy is a common method of zygomatic hypoplasia correction. Natural coral is considered to be a good bone substitute. Few studies on unilateral zygomatic hypoplasia correction by zygomatic osteotomy with natural coral have been reported. This study was performed to evaluate the clinical morphological results and surgical outcomes of unilateral zygomatic hypoplasia correction by L-shaped zygomatic osteotomy with natural coral. METHODS: From 1996 to 2012, a total of 42 patients with hypoplastic zygomas treated by L-shaped zygomatic osteotomy with natural coral were inclu

The nasomaxillary complex and the cranial base in artificial cranial deformation: relationships from a geometric morphometric study.

INTRODUCTION: It is widely accepted that there is a relationship between the cranial base and the development of the nasomaxillary complex (NMC). The objective of the present study was to investigate the morphological relationship between these two anatomical units in skulls that have intentionally been subjected to one of two types of artificial deformity of the cranial vault [artificially deformed skulls (ADS)]. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A geometric morphometry study was performed on lateral cephalometric X-rays of three groups of crania: 32 with anteroposterior (AP) deformity, 17 with circumfe

Impact of cone-beam computed tomography on orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning.

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we measured the impact of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) on orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. METHODS: Participant orthodontists shown traditional orthodontic records for 6 patients were asked to provide a diagnostic problem list, a hypothetical treatment plan, and a clinical certainty. They then evaluated a CBCT scan for each patient and noted any changes, confirmations, or enhancements to their diagnosis and treatment plan. RESULTS: The number of diagnosis and treatment plan changes varied widely by patient characteristics. The most frequently

Unilateral ectopic parotid gland in CHARGE syndrome.

Unilateral absence of a parotid gland at the expected location is an extremely rare condition with only a few cases reported in the medical literature and, to our knowledge, never previously described in association with CHARGE syndrome (Coloboma of the eye, Heart defects, Atresia of the choanae, Retardation of growth and/or development, Genital and/or urinary abnormalities, and Ear abnormalities and deafness). Although this entity is usually associated with a complex constellation of anomalies, additional findings have been described, including cranial nerve dysfunction (VII, VIII, IX and X).

[Developmental disturbances of medial part of face of patients with bilateral cleft lip and palate with special consideration of a nose].

UNLABELLED: Cleft is a developmental malformation, which is defined as a partial or complete lack of anatomic tissues continuity in typical areas of disorders in embryological face development. The reasons for cleft formation are not completely recognised but many hypotheses indicate both environmental and genetic factors as possible sources. The list of the cleft types is the following: cleft lip, cleft lip and alveolus, isolated cleft palate, cleft lip, alveolus and palate, and combined clefts. The malformation may occur unilateral or bilateral. According to World Health Organization cleft l

FGF signalling in craniofacial development and developmental disorders.

The Fgf signalling pathway is highly conserved in evolution and plays crucial roles in development. In the craniofacial region, it is involved in almost all structure development from early patterning to growth regulation. In craniofacial skeletogenesis, the Fgf signal pathway plays important roles in suture and synchondrosis regulation. Mutations of FGF receptors relate to syndromatic and non-syndromatic craniosynostosis. The Fgf10/Fgfr2b signal loop is critical for palatogenesis and submandibular gland formation. Perturbation of the Fgf signal is a possible mechanism of palatal cleft. Fgf10

[Perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis in orthodontic bone operations of the facial skull].

Intraoral orthognathic surgical procedures are clean-contaminated operations because of the facultative pathogenic flora of the oral cavity. Without antibiotic prophylaxis in this kind of operation a postoperative wound infection can be expected in 20-31% of cases. Therefore, a retrospective analysis of the clinical course of 545 patients with various dentofacial deformities was performed to evaluate the importance of perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis. The total rate of wound infections was 2.8% and lower than rates published in other comparable studies without antibiotic prophylaxis. The r

Cementoblastoma Mimicking Pathology of Endodontic Origin: A Case Report.

Interdisciplinary care in the management of complex pathology is critical to ensure patients receive predictable, evidence-based treatment. The authors report the unique case of a healthy 38-year-old female patient who presented to a private endodontics practice with a radiopaque lesion associated with the root of tooth No. 20. The patient experienced mild and occasional palpation tenderness associated with the tooth. Extraoral examination and intraoral soft tissues presented without any abnormalities. Intraoral radiographs revealed a radiopacity overlying the apex of tooth No. 20. A cone-beam

Tuberculosis of the temporomandibular joint.

INTRODUCTION: Extrapulmonary and extra-spinal tuberculosis (TB) is rare, even in countries where the disease is endemic. Ten percent of these localizations are cervico-facial. Involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is very unusual. We present the features of such a case. REVIEW: We looked for patients managed for TMJ TB in 2 Maxillofacial Surgery departments and in 1 Pneumology & Phthisiology Department since 1992. The second part of the study was a literature review. One case was found in our departments and 15 other cases were found in published data. Most patients were women with

Hierarchical Deep Decision Tree-Based Network for Odontogenic Cystic Lesion Classification in CBCT Images.

Odontogenic cystic lesions (OCLs) are complex jaw abnormalities that require a precise diagnosis of the disease for treatment. Visual OCL diagnosis is commonly based on reviewing cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to identify morpho-pathological features associated with specific lesion types in a hierarchical manner. Current state-of-the-art methods focus on extracting features from the image without any guidance beyond the lesion diagnosis, and do not fully leverage the hierarchical relationship between the lesion diagnosis and morphological features. In this study, we propose a hierarchica

Identification of OPN3 as associated with non-syndromic oligodontia in a Japanese population.

Tooth agenesis is one of the most frequent congenital abnormalities found in the maxillofacial region. Oligodontia, a severe form of tooth agenesis, occurs as an isolated anomaly or as a syndromic feature. We performed whole exome sequencing analyses to identify causative mutation in a Japanese family with three affected individuals with non-syndromic oligodontia. After variant filtering procedures and validation by Sanger sequencing, we identified one missense mutation (c.668 C > T, p.Gly223Asp) in OPN3 at 1q43, encoding a photosensitive G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) expressed in various

Ruptured infectious ICA pseudoaneurysm into the sphenoid sinus after maxillofacial infection, successfully treated by selective embolization.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial infectious aneurysms are cerebral aneurysms caused by pathogen-induced inflammation undermining the arterial wall. We present a rare case of inflammatory pseudoaneurysm of cavernous internal carotid artery (ICA). CASE DESCRIPTION: A 51-year-old female with a recent diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia developed maxillofacial infection with Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter after chemotherapy onset. Initial plain computed tomography (CT) revealed bony dehiscence of the left ICA canal, as well as bilateral protrusion of the vessel within the sphenoid sinus. Following i

Oral features in five adult patients with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome.

The Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) is a rare genetic condition presenting with severe mental disability, growth retardation, muscular hypotonia, seizures, craniofacial abnormalities and defects in the cardiovascular, genitourinary and digestive apparata. To date, few data about oral status of afflicted patients were reported, and this syndrome is still unfamiliar among dental and maxillofacial professionals. Aim of the present case series was to provide oral data from five patients with WHS (3 women and 2 men) aged 19-41 years. All patients entered in a long-stay Institution with an inner dent

Two-dimensional cephalometric analysis of the effects of subperiosteal palatal soft-tissue expansion in growing cats.

The feasibility and possible effects of palatal soft-tissue expansion in palatal repair were studied. A prospective longitudinal animal experiment was performed in 75 growing cats assigned to 5 groups. In 31 cats, a midline defect was made, and bipediced flaps were raised at the age of 8 weeks (stimulated Langenbeck operation) in order to create palatal scars. At the age of 14 weeks, custom-made tissue expanders were inserted palatally in 61 animals. Tissue expansion was performed by weekly inflation in 33 cats (16 without and 17 with scars) for an 8-week period. The remaining 28 cats (14 with
