[Pulmonary mucormycoses (author's transl)].

Mucormycoses are rare, acute infections, most often fatal, occurring usually in a host with decreased immunity. The agents are ubiquitous fungi belonging to the Mucoraceae family, an ordinary saprophyte becoming pathogenous in patients with a severe disease (malignant hemopathy, diabetes) or treated by immunosuppressive drugs. Pulmonary localizations remained exceptional (128 cases found in the literature). The observations reported draws its originality from: -- the etiological circumstances: an aged patient with no hemopathy or diabetes, without immunosuppressive treatment but undergoing a p…

Immunosuppression and eye disease. First Vail lecture.

Several viral, fungal, and protozoal diseases of the eye are significantly associated with immunologic deficiencies. Of the viral agents, cytomegaly and herpes simplex and zoster cause a discrete necrotizing retinopathy that has the characteristics of vascular occlusion. Measles may result in a delayed retinopathy that is predominantly macular and associated with subacute progressive encephalopathy. Of the fungal agents, Candida and Aspergillus are apt to involve the eye, beginning as choroidal lesions with extension forward to involve the pigment epithelium and retina secondarily. Mucor and C…

Preliminary investigation into the prevalence of mucormycosis in the platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) in three catchments in north-west Tasmania.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution and prevalence of mucormycosis in platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) from the Inglis, Emu and Black-Detention catchment areas in north-west Tasmania. PROCEDURE: A field study was performed and resulted in the examination of 44 wild platypuses; in addition, one dead platypus and two live platypuses were examined after they were independently submitted to a local veterinary clinic. RESULTS: No cases of mucormycosis were conclusively diagnosed. One platypus with signs consistent with those previously described in cases of mucormycosis was captured in …

Invasive fungal infections in the paediatric and neonatal population: diagnostics and management issues.

Invasive fungal infections in children appear to have increased over the past few decades. Especially neonates and children with primary and secondary immunodeficiencies are at risk. Candida and Aspergillus spp. are the most commonly isolated organisms. In addition, Malassezia may cause systemic infections in newborns and zygomycosis is important because of its rising incidence and high case fatality rate. Timely diagnosis and initiation of appropriate antifungal therapy is imperative for improving outcomes. However, traditional techniques are time-consuming and representative sample material,

Pulmonary mucormycosis presenting as massive fatal hemoptysis in a hemodialytic patient with chronic renal failure.

A 38 year old female patient died following massive hemoptysis occurring during maintenance hemodialysis for chronic renal failure. In addit … re the pulmonary arterial wall was also involved. Immunostaining using specific antibody identified Mucor hyphae. The mucormycosis is a serious complication of chronic renal failure and hemodialysis. In the current case, it is likely that immune dysfunction rather than deferoxamine was the important predisposing factor to the growth of the fungus.

Venous intestinal ischemia of fungal origin as a cause of intestinal obstruction in immunocompromised patients: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a highly lethal opportunistic fungal disease caused by ubiquitous molds of the order Mucorales, with Rhizopus, Lichtheimia and Mucor being the most common genera. This rare disease primarily affects immunocompromised patients, with presentations ranging from rhino-orbito-cerebral infections to disseminated mucormycosis with angioinvasion, leading to thrombosis and tissue infarction. Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is the least common clinical presentation and is believed to be secondary to spore ingestion. It can involve multiple components of the gastrointestinal tra…

Evolving therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection: efficacy and economic impact in the treatment of patients with duodenal ulcer disease.

Pears are highly perishable products, especially during the post-harvest phase, when considerable losses can occur. Among the fungal diseases, blue mold caused by Penicillium expansum, grey mould caused by Botrytis cinerea, Mucor rot caused by Mucor piriformis are common on pear fruits. Other (weak) pathogens like Phialophora malorum, Alternaria spp., and Cladosporium herbarum tend to infect wounds and senescent fruits. A post-harvest fungicide treatment can reduce decay but effectiveness decreases with the appearance of resistant strains. There is a clear need to develop new and alternative m…

Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis: A Clinical Review.

Mucormycosis is a devastating fungal infection that is usually seen in immunocompromised hosts. It is caused by fungi of the subphylum Mucoromycotina, order Mucorales, with most cases caused by Mucor, Rhizopus, or Rhizomucor species. It can involve any organ system and can disseminate in severe cases. Lately, there has been an increased number of reports for mucormycosis infection in immunocompetent patients. Gastrointestinal system involvement is rare compared to other organ systems but has been increasingly reported in the literature. Mucormycosis can affect any part of the gastrointestinal …

Facial nerve paralysis: A case report of rare complication in uncontrolled diabetic patient with mucormycosis.

Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic aggressive and fatal infection caused by mucor fungus. Seven types of mucormycosis are identified based on the extension and involvement of the lesion, of which the rhino orbital mucormycosis is most common in the head and neck region. Although it is widely spread in nature, clinical cases are rare and observed only in immunocompromised patients and patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. Early symptoms include fever, nasal ulceration or necrosis, periorbital edema or facial swelling, paresthesia and reduced vision. Involvement of cranial nerves altho…

Fungal carriage in lizards.

The occurrence of fungi was investigated in the gut of 200 common garden lizards (Agama agama). The most important pathogenic fungus isolated was Basidiobolus haptosporus, an aetiological agent of subcutaneous zygomycosis. It was recovered from the intestinal contents of 112 (56%) lizards. Other important fungi isolated included Aspergillus spp. in 24 (12%) lizards, Candida spp. in 12 (6%), Penicillium spp. in 12 (6%) and Fusarium spp. in 12 (6%). Mucor spp. were isolated from eight (4%) male lizards only. Agamid lizards are plentiful in rural and urban areas of Nigeria. As they live in close …

Molecular architecture of chitin and chitosan-dominated cell walls in zygomycetous fungal pathogens by solid-state NMR.

Zygomycetous fungal infections pose an emerging medical threat among individuals with compromised immunity and metabolic abnormalities. Our pathophysiological understanding of these infections, particularly the role of fungal cell walls in growth and immune response, remains limited. Here we conducted multidimensional solid-state NMR analysis to examine cell walls in five Mucorales species, including key mucormycosis causative agents like Rhizopus and Mucor species. We show that the rigid core of the cell wall primarily comprises highly polymorphic chitin and chitosan, with minimal quantities …

Bacterial endosymbiosis is widely present among zygomycetes but does not contribute to the pathogenesis of mucormycosis.

Environmental isolates of the fungus Rhizopus have been shown to harbor a bacterial endosymbiont (Burkholderia) that produces rhixozin, a plant mycotoxin. We sought to define the role of rhizoxin production by endosymbionts in the pathogenesis of mucormycosis. Endosymbiotic bacteria were identified by polymerase chain reaction in 15 (54%) of 28 clinical isolates of Zygomycetes, with 33% of the bacterial strains showing 87% identity to Burkholderia 16S rDNA. The presence of rhizoxin in myclial extracts from fungi harboring bacteria was confirmed by high-performance liquid chromatography analysi…
