Case Report: Red Urine After Day Care Strabismus Surgery.

In the absence of surgery on the urinary tract, the emission of red urine after anesthesia should be considered as a diagnostic emergency because it can be a sign of hematuria, hemoglobinuria, blood transfusion reaction, significant myoglobinuria, or porphyria. This case describes the management of a 12-year-old boy who presented red urine at the day care unit after strabismus surgery.

[Rhabdomyolysis in acute cocaine poisoning. Presentation of 2 cases].

Because the important increase of cocaine abuse and the frequent pathology associated, we present two cases of males who had a multiorganic failure cause by severe rabdomyolysis, renal failure with myoglobinuria and disseminated intravascular coagulation, after the cocaine consumption. In one case a pancreatitis associated was observed, this not being described before. Both cases are recovered.

Crush syndrome: experience from the Lebanon War, 1982.

Eight patients with crush syndrome were treated in our department during the Lebanon War, 1982. They arrived after having been trapped under fallen masonry for 4 to 28 h. They all had injuries of the lower limbs, with neurological deficiency and myoglobinuria. The local and general aspects of the syndrome are presented and discussed and a successful treatment protocol outlined.

[Creatine phosphokinases and serum and urinary myoglobin following a procedure in prolonged knee-chest position for the treatment of spondylolisthesis].

Rhabdomyolysis following the knee-chest position was studied in 15 patients scheduled for surgery for spondylolisthesis. A comparison was ma … a statistical increase of CPK in all patients, with great individual variations. Myoglobinaemia and myoglobinuria were observed in six patients, these not being correlated with the variations of CPK. Nevertheless, the maximal increase of CPK and myoglobin was seen in one patient, without any modification of diuresis but with an increase of creatininaemia at 220 …

Acute renal failure in severe exertional rhabdomyolysis.

During the last 6 years, 7 healthy individuals who were reasonably well acclimatised to physical exertion came under observation with acute renal failure due to exercise induced myoglobinuria. Their mean age was 20 years, and renal failure resulted after cross country run of 10-15 km in 6 cases and long route march of 90 km in 3 days in one case. There was no evidence of effects of heat, dehydration or hypotension. Apart from myoglobinuria and significant urinary sediments, serum aldolase (mean 69.0 SL u/ml) and serum creatinine phosphokinase (mean 120.0 Sigma u/ml) were also elevated. Maximum…

Rhabdomyolysis in falciparum malaria--a series of twelve cases (five children and seven adults).

There are very few reports in the literature of rhabdomyolysis in falciparum malaria and they mostly consist of single case studies. A report from Sri Lanka described a single patient with myoglobinuria and skeletal muscle necrosis. Taylor and Prosser reported a single case of rhabdomyolysis with renal failure. We report on 12 patients with evidence of skeletal muscle injury in severe malaria from Rourkela, Orissa State, India.

McArdle's disease presenting as recurrent cryptogenic renal failure due to occult seizures.

Myophosphorylase deficiency (McArdle's disease) may present with episodic renal failure following exertion. We present a case of adult-onset myophosphorylase deficiency in which recurrent bouts of renal failure could not be associated with any exertional events until a tonic seizure was witnessed after the fourth episode of renal failure. In the absence of a clear exertional cause for myoglobinuria, an occult seizure disorder should be suspected.

Severe hyponatremia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure: a case report.

Acute renal failure secondary to myoglobinuria is a rare yet possible complication of malignant neuroleptic syndrome associated with the use of dopamine antagonists. We describe the case of a 42-year-old schizophrenic man who presented with severe hyponatremia, and proceeded to acute malignant neuroleptic syndrome, rhabdomyolysis, and acute renal failure. We contend that the acute hyponatremia may have served as a precipitating factor.

Toxic myopathy in a dog associated with the presence of monensin in dry food.

This report describes a case of toxic myopathy in a two year old sheltie dog with clinical signs of profound weakness, myoglobinuria, and muscle enzyme elevations. The clinical signs were likely related to the accidental inclusion of monensin sodium in the dog's food. This food was prepared by a small feed milling company that also prepares cattle and chicken rations. A change of dog food resulted in remission of the clinical signs.

[Malignant hyperthermia. I. Observations in connection with its pathogenesis and course (author's transl)].

Malignant hyperthermia developed in the 94th minute of anesthesia undergone by a nearly 5-year-old girl. Two minutes after re-filling the halothane vaporizer, muscle rigor and tachyarrhythmia occurred. Massive myoglobinuria setting in on the day of operation reached its peak on the 1st postoperative day. Only following this were the highest CK activities to be recorded. CK-BB could not be detected at any time.

Cytosorb for Management of Acute Kidney Injury due to Rhabdomyolysis in a Child.

A 6-year-old girl presented with rhabdomyolysis following a febrile illness. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Influenza B and enterovirus was positive. Her serum creatine kinase (CK) and myoglobin levels were very high. She developed myoglobinuria with oliguria leading to acute kidney injury. Continuous renal replacement therapy along with Cytosorb filter resulted in good outcome.

Acute renal failure due to tubular necrosis caused by wildfowl-mediated hemlock poisoning.

We report the clinical and histological findings in patients with acute renal failure caused by the ingestion of wildfowl who had eaten hemlock buds. Neurotoxic effects were accompanied by rhabdomyolysis, myoglobinuria, and acute tubular necrosis. Histological studies showed diffuse degeneration of the tubular epithelium. Immunohistological studies demonstrated the presence of myoglobin and actin in renal tubular cells.

Non-traumatic acute rhabdomyolysis.

A boy developed sudden severe generalized muscle stiffness, bulbar weakness and passed dark coloured urine. Laboratory tests revealed marked elevation of creatinine kinase(CK) levels and myoglobinuria. Histopathology of quadriceps muscle showed features of acute rhabdomyolysis. Patient made complete clinical recovery over a period of three weeks and CK returned to normal level. The possible aetiologies of non-traumatic rhabdomyolysis are discussed and the relevant literature reviewed.

Compartment syndromes and compression neuropathies in coma.

Eight patients are reported who developed peripheral nerve injuries due to limb compression during unattended coma. In each patient, the site of the peripheral nerve lesion or the unique combination of peripheral nerve lesions and swollen limbs, pressure blisters, or myoglobinuria indicated that compartment syndromes caused the nerve injury. The peripheral nerve injuries were characterized by severe axonal loss with persistent and often disabling sequelae.

Cardiac arrest following inhalation induction of anaesthesia in a child with Duchenne's muscular dystrophy.

Cardiac arrest occurred in a 5 1/2-year-old child with suspected Duchenne's muscular dystrophy ten minutes following induction of anaesthesia with halothane, nitrous oxide and oxygen. No muscle relaxants were administered. The cardiac arrest was associated with hyperkalaemia, acidosis, myoglobinuria, elevated serum creatine phosphokinase and a 1.6 degrees C rise in temperature. The child made a complete recovery after receiving 90 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

McArdle's disease in an elderly woman.

We have described a woman who was 71 years old when McArdle's disease was first diagnosed. She had few symptoms even during severe myoglobinuria. Muscle breakdown occurred upon relatively mild exertion. Others of her kindred had elevated serum creatine kinase levels and reported stiffness and muscle weakness upon relatively mild exertion. This case demonstrates the need to be alert to relatively mild manifestations of metabolic diseases.

Exertional rhabdomyolysis in a body builder abusing anabolic androgenic steroids.

Rhabdomyolysis, or acute skeletal muscle destruction, may be accompanied by myoglobinaemia, myoglobinuria, and an elevated serum creatine kinase level. This disorder has many potential causes. In this article, the authors describe a case of rhabdomyolysis occurring after vigorous weight lifting by a man who was supplementing his weight-training programme with the intake of anabolic androgenic steroids dispensed to him by a colleague.

The morphological changes in acute renal failure due to rhamdomyolysis following viral infection.

A case of myoglobinuric renal failure associated with viral rhabdomyolysis is described. Clinical signs of muscle involvement were lacking, but peculiar biochemical abnormalities suggested the diagnosis which was established by renal biopsy. The management required brief supportive hemodialysis, and the patient recovered. The diagnosis of myoglobinuria should be considered when acute renal failure develop subsequently to the onset of viral infection.
