We performed a retrospective review of 101 patients sustaining 102 traumatic, non-pathological subtrochanteric fractures treated with cephalo-medullary nailing over a period of 6 years from 1999 to 2005. Mean follow up was 24 weeks (range: 6-96). Twenty patients were lost to follow up and 21 died, whilst 57 of 60 fractures were followed to union. There were 19 fractures fixed in varus, as defined as a varus angulation of greater than 10 degrees at the fracture site. This paper presents a novel image-guided robot-based system to assist orthopedic surgeons in performing distal locking of long bone intramedullary nails. The system consists of a bone-mounted miniature robot fitted with a drill guide that provides rigid mechanical guidance for hand-held drilling of the distal screws' pilot holes. Lichen planus is a relatively common inflammatory dermatosis with characteristic lesions affecting the skin, nails and mucous membranes. Nail changes are present in approximately 10% of patients and can occasionally occur in the absence of skin involvement. The association of lichen planus with primary biliary cirrhosis is now well recognized. We report the first case of lichen planus confined to the nails in a patient with primary biliary cirrhosis.

Four children with symptomless or 'idiopathic' atrophy of the nails were studied. There were no other cutaneous signs. A longitudinal nail biopsy was performed on each patient and demonstrated active lichen planus in three cases and changes consistent with scarring lichen planus in the fourth.

Between November 1979 and January 1983, we treated fifty-one severe fractures of the tibial shaft with multiple intramedullary Ender nails. Thirty-six fractures were treated within two weeks after injury. Forty-one fractures united in less than four months and eight, in four to eight months. Only two were not united after eight months. An anatomical reduction was maintained in all but three of the fractures, in which the tibia shortened. This article describes purpura and pigmentations of the lower extremities as well as yellow nails mainly in elderly diabetics but also in persons not known to have diabetes. When the latter were compared to controls, it appeared that their glucose tolerance was altered in a diabetic direction.
