[Consensus guidelines for the management of upper respiratory tract infections].

Upper respiratory tract infections are the most common source of antibiotic prescriptions. Acute pharyngitis is caused mainly by viruses, viral cases can be distinguished from acute streptococcal pharyngitis using Centor clinical epidemiological criteria, by rapid antigen tests or throat culture. Treatment of choice for streptococcal infection is penicillin V given in two daily doses. In children, acute otitis media (AOM) is the infection for which antibiotics are most often prescribed. Predominant causative pathogens include Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae non-type b and Mora

Characterization of ectoparasites in an urban cat (Felis catus Linnaeus, 1758) population of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Ectoparasites are capable of transmitting infectious diseases and, therefore, are of zoonotic concern. Cats submitted to a spay/neuter program in the city of Rio de Janeiro were examined to determine the distribution of ectoparasites in cats from a city with a tropical climate. Independent of gender, breed, or age, 292 cats were combed and subjected to otoscopic examination. Ectoparasites were collected, and blood samples were taken to determine packed cell volume. The majority of the 292 cats were female (71%), and most of them were categorized as domestic short hair cats (92%). Different spe

Oronasal blood in sudden infant death.

Oronasal secretions are observed frequently in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), but overt blood is uncommonly reported. The literature on oronasal blood in sudden infant death is limited. The goal of this study was to determine the frequency of oronasal blood in sudden infant deaths and to examine possible causative factors. Oronasal blood was described in 28 (7%) of 406 cases of sudden infant death. Oronasal blood could not be attributed to cardiopulmonary resuscitation in 14 cases, including 10 (3%) of 300 cases of SIDS, 2 (14%) of 14 accidental suffocation cases, and 2 (15%) of 13 undet

Assessing diagnostic accuracy and tympanocentesis skills in the management of otitis media.

BACKGROUND: The distinction between acute suppurative otitis media (AOM) and otitis media with effusion (OME) is important for antibiotic treatment decisions. Tympanocentesis may be useful in the diagnosis of AOM in selected patients. OBJECTIVES: To assess physician accuracy in diagnosing AOM and OME from physical examination findings and technical competence in performing tympanocentesis. DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: Five hundred fourteen pediatricians and 188 otolaryngologists viewed 9 different videotaped pneumatic otoscopic examinations of tympanic membranes during a continuing medical education

[Middle ear function in children with cleft palate].

Middle ear problems in patients with cleft palate have for a long time received insufficient attention. The present study was designed to evaluate middle ear function in 56 children with cleft palate and in a control group of 50 children without cleft palate. The age ranging between 5 and 14 years was similar in both groups. All children underwent routine otoscopic examinations of ear, nose and throat, and were also examined using the Madsen acoustic impedance audiometer. Four major parameters (static compliance, middle ear pressure, acoustic stapedius reflex and Eustachian tube function) were

Treatment of traumatic separation of the auricular and annular cartilages without ablation: results in five dogs.

Five dogs were diagnosed as having unilateral separation of the otic cartilages (auricular and annular). Four dogs had sustained prior trauma (hit by a car). Clinical signs were typical of ear canal stenosis and included swelling at the base of the ear (n = 2), periotic fistulation (n = 2), head tilt toward the affected side (n = 2), and pain when opening the mouth (n = 1). Palpation revealed separation of the horizontal and vertical ear canals. Otoscopic findings included a shallow ear canal and a pseudotympanic membrane across the proximal end of the auricular cartilage. Findings at surgery

Auditory brainstem responses in children with otitis media with effusion.

Auditory brainstem responses (ABR) were recorded in 14 infants and toddlers and 12 school-age children with a previous history of recurrent otitis media with effusion (OME), or otoscopic and tympanometric evidence of persistent OME, or both. ABR tests were performed immediately before and after myringotomy and tympanostomy tube insertion in the younger subjects. For the school-age children, ABR tests were performed following otoscopy, tympanometry, and pure tone audiometry. The results demonstrate that the latency of both wave I and wave V of the ABR was sensitive (82% and 100%, respectively)

An artificial intelligence model for the diagnosis of otitis media with effusion in children.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of otitis media with effusion (OME) requires substantial training and experience in otoscopic examination of children. OBJECTIVE: This study developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model to predict OME diagnosis in children. METHODS: The source data were images of pediatric patients' tympanic membranes obtained by otoendoscopy. A convolutional neural network was used in machine learning. The diagnostic features of the tympanic membrane, as labelled by the experts, and the surgical findings served as the ground truth. InceptionV4 built the final model. The model wa

Isolated Congenital Ossicular Chain Anomalies.

Isolated congenital ossicular chain anomalies (COCAs) are an uncommon cause of conductive hearing loss in patients with a normal external auditory canal and tympanic membrane, and familial clustering is rarely described. We report three siblings with non-progressive conductive hearing loss and normal otoscopic findings. Two siblings exhibited bilateral involvement, whereas the third had unilateral disease with a normal contralateral ear. High-resolution temporal bone computed tomography suggested incudostapedial (I-S) discontinuity caused by defects in the long process of the incus, without ex

The Efficacy of Acupuncture and Bee Venom Injections in Improving Hearing in a Patient with Idiopathic Conductive Hearing Loss: a case report.

Conductive hearing loss (CHL) is commonly caused by tympanic membrane perforation or otitis media. Congenital ossicular anomalies and otosclerosis are the primary considerations in patients with normal tympanic membranes and external auditory canals, whereas stapedius tendon abnormalities are less frequently observed. Acupuncture and bee venom (BV) injections are frequently used for treating otological disorders; however, their effectiveness in treating CHL remains unexplored. Therefore, this case report describes a 22-year-old man with idiopathic left-sided CHL that persisted for 101 days. Wh

Removal of an Aural Foreign Body by Magnetism.

CASE PRESENTATION: A male patient in his thirties with a history of polysubstance use presented to the emergency department (ED) due to an abrasion on his left forehead caused by banging his head against a wall in self-injurious behavior. A non-contrast computed tomography of the head obtained to rule out intracranial injury incidentally demonstrated a radiodense foreign body in the left external ear canal. A round metallic foreign body was subsequently visualized on otoscopic examination. The aural foreign body (AFB) was identified as a metallic bead that the patient had placed into his own e
