The application of modified magnetic nanoparticles in extraction of trace Hg was investigated. For this purpose, surfaces of magnetic nanoparticles were modified by 2-picolamine and then utilized as a solid-phase sorbent for Hg(II) extraction. A statistical method, based on surface response design, has been used for the optimization of Hg ion elution from the magnetic nanoparticles. The sorbed Hg ions were eluted quantitatively with 5.5 mL of a solution containing 0.8 M HCl and 0.08 M EDTA after 12 min. Streptozotocin-induced diabetes leads to the development of endothelial dysfunction, as evidenced by decreased expression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and increased expression of endothelin-1 as specific markers of endothelial disorders. All test substances showed endotelioprotective activity by increasing the concentration of eNOS and reducing the level of endothelin-1. RP 49356 is a novel compound which relaxes airway smooth muscle in vitro. Like cromakalim, RP 49356 reduced contractility in guinea pig isolated trachealis under basal conditions or when challenged with low (less than 20 mM) but not high K+. The effect on neonatal administration of synthetic antioxidant mexidol on avoidance conditioning was studied in 2-month old rats. The inhibition of the free-radical oxidation in the tissues of 3-7-day old rats considerably facilitated subsequent process of learning: the avoidance response latency was reduced by 4-6 times, the conditioned response was two-fold augmented, and total motor activity was reduced at the stage of a stable response.
