In Vivo Response to Electrocompacted Tendon-Derived Thread Scaffolds During Tendon Repair.

Tendon injuries remain a major clinical challenge due to the tissue's limited regenerative capacity and poor remodeling of current allograft-based therapies. To address these limitations, we developed a tendon-derived thread (TDT) scaffold by electrocompacting decellularized tendon powder into aligned threads, which were subsequently woven into a porous overlay patch. Biochemical analyses of TDT confirmed efficient decellularization (DNA < 50 ng/mg) and the preservation of collagen and proteoglycans. Compared to en bloc human tendon graft (HTG), the TDT scaffold exhibited significantly higher

Repair of a Chronic Quadriceps Tendon Re-rupture With Semitendinosus Tendon Autograft Augmentation.

The quadriceps tendon (QT) functions as one of the primary knee extensor mechanisms. The risk of QT tendinopathy increases with age, which also impacts the risk of QT rupture. This injury typically occurs as a result of an abrupt eccentric contraction with knee hyperflexion. A QT rupture has detrimental effects on quality of life and function. Surgical repair provides improved outcomes, but the risk of re-rupture is still present, with limited literature discussing outcomes. This technical note describes the repair of a chronic QT re-rupture fixated with suture anchors and semitendinosus tendo

Risk Factors for Contralateral Tendon Rupture in Patients With Acute Achilles Tendon Rupture.

The present study was performed to determine the incidence and risk factors of contralateral Achilles tendon rupture after an initial tendon rupture, and to identify the associated patient characteristics. Medical records of 181 adult patients with acute Achilles tendon rupture were reviewed. We investigated the risk factors for contralateral Achilles tendon rupture and calculated the incidence density (per 100 person-years), survival rate, hazard ratios, and 95% confidence intervals. The risk factors were extracted, including blood type, age, body mass index (BMI), occupation, underlying como

Tracking tendon fibers to their insertion - a 3D analysis of the Achilles tendon enthesis in mice.

Tendon insertions to bone are heavily loaded transitions between soft and hard tissues. The fiber courses in the tendon have profound effects on the distribution of stress along and across the insertion. We tracked fibers of the Achilles tendon in mice in micro-computed tomographies and extracted virtual transversal sections. The fiber tracks and shapes were analyzed from a position in the free tendon to the insertion. Mechanically relevant parameters were extracted. The fiber number was found to stay about constant along the tendon. But the fiber cross-sectional areas decrease towards the ins

Outcome of primary tendon grafts for open Zone 3 extensor tendon injuries.

Open injuries of the extensor mechanism in Zone 3 (dorsum of the proximal interphalangeal joint) have poor outcomes. We retrospectively analysed the outcomes of treating 19 Zone 3 extensor tendon injuries in 17 patients. The treatment comprised wound excision and debridement, primary tendon graft to reconstruct the damaged/missing extensor tendon, skeletal fixation when required, local flaps to vascularize the zone of injury and immediate short arc motion therapy. Using the criteria defined by Geldmacher et al., the outcome was predicted to be poor in nine, satisfactory in seven and good in th

Modified Percutaneous Achilles Tendon Lengthening by Triple Hemisection for Achilles Tendon Contracture.

BACKGROUND: Both percutaneous Achilles tendon lengthening by triple hemisection and the traditional open Z-lengthening are effective methods for Achilles tendon contracture. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of this new therapeutic method, which is based on the percutaneous sliding technique with three hemi-cuts in the tendon, as compared with the traditional open Z-lengthening. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the Achilles tendon contracture cases in our hospital between January 2010 and September 2016 was conducted. Twenty-five cases received percutaneous Achilles tendon

Kinetic analysis of canine gait on the effect of failure tendon repair and tendon graft.

Kinetic analysis of canine gait has been extensively studied, including normal and abnormal gait. However, no research has looked into how flexor tendon injury and further treatment would affect the walking pattern comparing to the uninjured state. Therefore, this study was aimed to utilize a portable pressure walkway system, which has been commonly used for pedobarographic and kinetic analysis in the veterinary field, to examine the effect of a failed tendon repair and tendon graft reconstruction on canine digit kinetics during gait. 12 mixed breed (mongrel) hound-type female dogs were includ

Anatomic study suggests that the morphology of the plantaris tendon may be related to Achilles tendonitis.

PURPOSE: Achilles tendinopathy is a significant clinical lower limb issue observed in recent years. Neither the location nor the mechanism behind the pain has yet been sufficiently explained. Patients frequently experience pain on the medial side of the calcaneal tendon, and between 2 and 7 cm above the calcaneal tuberosity, which may suggests that the plantaris tendon plays an important role. The purpose of this study was to determine the anatomical relationships between the course of the plantaris tendon and the calcaneal tendon, as well as the type of insertion of the plantaris tendon. MET

Reconstruction of chronic patellar tendon rupture with contralateral bone-tendon-bone autograft.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical and functional outcome following the reconstruction of chronic patellar tendon ruptures using the contralateral bone-tendon-bone (BTB) autograft. METHODS: The records of seven patients who underwent reconstruction of chronic patellar tendon rupture with contralateral patellar BTB were retrospectively reviewed. Chronic tears were defined as a minimum of 3 months from injury to initial clinical evaluation. Clinical assessments included range of motion of the knee, Tegner, Lysholm and International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) score and a radiographic ana

The role of proximal pulleys in preventing tendon bowstringing: pulley rupture and tendon bowstringing.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate factors that contribute to tendon bowstringing at the proximal phalanx. We hypothesised that: (1) a partial rupture of the A2 pulley leads to significant bowstringing, (2) the location of the A2 rupture, starting proximally or distally, influences bowstringing, (3) an additional A3 pulley rupture causes a significant increase in bowstringing following a complete A2 pulley rupture and (4) the skin and tendon sheath may prevent bowstringing in A2 and A3 pulley ruptures. METHODS: Index, middle and ring fingers of eight freshly frozen cadaver arms

Chronic Achilles Tendon Rupture Reconstructed With Achilles Tendon Allograft and Xenograft Combination.

More than 20% of acute Achilles tendon injuries are misdiagnosed, leading to chronic or neglected ruptures. Some controversy exists regarding how to best manage an acute Achilles tendon rupture. However, a general consensus has been reached that chronic rupture with ≥3 cm of separation is associated with functional morbidity and, therefore, should be managed operatively. It has been demonstrated that the functional outcomes of surgically treated Achilles ruptures are superior to the nonoperative outcomes in a chronic setting. In the present report, we reviewed 4 patients with chronic Achilles

Investigating tendon mineralisation in the avian hindlimb: a model for tendon ageing, injury and disease.

Mineralisation of the tendon tissue has been described in various models of injury, ageing and disease. Often resulting in painful and debilitating conditions, the processes underlying this mechanism are poorly understood. To elucidate the progression from healthy tendon to mineralised tendon, an appropriate model is required. In this study, we describe the spontaneous and non-pathological ossification and calcification of tendons of the hindlimb of the domestic chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus). The appearance of the ossified avian tendon has been described previously, although there have be…
