Developments in CTG analysis.

FHR monitoring has been the subject of many debates. The technique, in itself, can be considered to be accurate and reliable both in the antenatal period, when using the Doppler signal in combination with autocorrelation techniques, and during the intrapartum period, in particular when the FHR signal can be obtained from a fetal ECG electrode placed on the presenting part. The major problems with FHR monitoring relate to the reading and interpretation of the CTG tracings. Since the FHR pattern is primarily an expression of the activity of the control by the central and peripheral nervous syste

When shared concept cells support associations: Theory of overlapping memory engrams.

Assemblies of neurons, called concepts cells, encode acquired concepts in human Medial Temporal Lobe. Those concept cells that are shared between two assemblies have been hypothesized to encode associations between concepts. Here we test this hypothesis in a computational model of attractor neural networks. We find that for concepts encoded in sparse neural assemblies there is a minimal fraction cmin of neurons shared between assemblies below which associations cannot be reliably implemented; and a maximal fraction cmax of shared neurons above which single concepts can no longer be retrieved.

Deep learning-based intraluminal gas modeling for anatomically accurate synthetic CT in MRI-based radiation therapy.

Purpose.Accurate modeling of intraluminal gas in synthetic computed tomography (sCT) is often compromised by the stochastic nature of bowel and rectal gas, which complicates magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/CT deformable image registration (DIR) and necessitates time-consuming manual corrections. Here, we propose a novel, DIR-free, two-stage deep learning framework designed to improve the definition of intraluminal gas in sCT. By circumventing registration-based errors, this method aims to streamline MRI-only simulation and enhance the dosimetric reliability of sCT images in MRI-based radiothe

Viewpoint on Computational Modeling of Multisensory Integration.

This article presents a compiled interview with three prominent figures in multisensory research: Ulrik Ravnsborg Beierholm, Hans Colonius, and Ladan Shams. Through structured dialogue, the authors reflect on the evolution of computational modeling, from early mathematical psychology to the current dominance of Bayesian causal inference (BCI). The discussion highlights key paradigm shifts, specifically the transition from descriptive studies of illusions to normative, mechanistic explanations of perception. The authors identify the 2002 demonstration by Ernst and Banks of statistically optimal

Connectome-based predictive modeling of compulsion in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Compulsion is one of core symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Although many studies have investigated the neural mechanism of compulsion, no study has used brain-based measures to predict compulsion. Here, we used connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) to identify networks that could predict the levels of compulsion based on whole-brain functional connectivity in 57 OCD patients. We then applied a computational lesion version of CPM to examine the importance of specific brain areas. We also compared the predictive network strength in OCD with unaffected first-degree relatives

3D profilometric object detection in turbid water using integral imaging and deep neural networks.

We evaluate a three-dimensional (3D) object detection system for operation in turbid water based on 3D profilometric Integral Imaging (InIm) and a deep neural network. While conventional InIm computational reconstruction provides the two-dimensional (2D) slices of the 3D scene at specific 2D depth planes, 3D profilometry allows visualization of the 3D surface from unique perspectives. In the proposed method, we develop a deep neural network-based red, green, blue-depth (RGB-D) object detection framework using passive 3D profilometry under turbid conditions. Carleman approximation based adaptive optimal control design of nonlinear systems: A three-phase policy iteration approach.

As one efficient algorithm in adaptive dynamic programming to address adaptive optimal control problems, policy iteration always involves an initial admissible control guess during iteration. Such an initialization process is nontrivial, especially for unstable systems or when system dynamics are totally unknown. To circumvent this limitation, this paper develops a novel adaptive optimal controller design scheme for continuous-time nonlinear systems through neural network-based policy iteration. By employing Carleman linearization, we lift the nonlinear model into a bilinear form, which allows

A Digital Architecture for the Real-Time Tracking of Wearing off Phenomenon in Parkinson's Disease.

Levodopa administration is currently the most common treatment to alleviate Parkinson's Disease (PD) symptoms. Nevertheless, prolonged use of Levodopa leads to a wearing-off (WO) phenomenon, causing symptoms to reappear. To build a personalized treatment plan aiming to manage PD and its symptoms effectively, there is a need for a technological system able to continuously and objectively assess the WO phenomenon during daily life. In this context, this paper proposes a WO tracker able to exploit neuromuscular data acquired by a dedicated wireless sensor network to discriminate between a Levodop

A 3D-CNN model with CT-based parametric response mapping for classifying COPD subjects.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a respiratory disorder involving abnormalities of lung parenchymal morphology with different severities. COPD is assessed by pulmonary-function tests and computed tomography-based approaches. We introduce a new classification method for COPD grouping based on deep learning and a parametric-response mapping (PRM) method. We extracted parenchymal functional variables of functional small airway disease percentage (fSAD%) and emphysema percentage (Emph%) with an image registration technique, being provided as input parameters of 3D convolutional neur

A graph-attentive GAN for rare-cell-aware single-cell RNA-seq data generation.

A central challenge in downstream single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) analysis is the high-dimensional, small-sample (HDSS) regime, often compounded by class imbalance from rare cell types. These factors hinder robust feature (gene) selection and cell clustering and limit the realism of samples generated by existing simulators. We introduce GARAGE, a Graph-Attentive RAre-cell aware single-cell data GEneration that augments the generator's input with a small, attention-weighted 'leakage' of real cells in addition to prior noise. Specifically, we build a k-nearest-neighbour cell graph and use

The Neuro-Computational Architecture of Value-Based Selection in the Human Brain.

Current neural models of value-based decision-making consider choices as a 2-stage process, proceeding from the "valuation" of each option under consideration to the "selection" of the best option on the basis of their subjective values. However, little is known about the computational mechanisms at play at the selection stage and its implementation in the human brain. Here, we used drift-diffusion models combined with model-based functional magnetic resonance imaging, effective connectivity, and multivariate pattern analysis to characterize the neuro-computational architecture of value-based

Selective control of prefrontal neural timescales by parietal cortex.

The frontal eye field (FEF) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC) are key hubs of the dorsal attention network, yet how parietal inputs shape prefrontal circuit temporal dynamics and attentional computations remains largely unknown. We measured intrinsic timescales of FEF neurons in male rhesus macaques and examined their changes during PPC inactivation. We observed two distinct classes of FEF neurons based on their intrinsic timescales: short-timescale neurons (~25 ms) and long-timescale neurons (~100 ms). Short-timescale neurons showed stronger transient visual responses, suggesting a role in

Enhancing the prediction of vitamin D deficiency levels using an integrated approach of deep learning and evolutionary computing.

Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) has emerged as a serious global health concern that can lead to far-reaching consequences, including skeletal issues and long-term illness. Classical diagnostic approaches, although effective, often include invasive techniques and lacks to leverage the massive amount of healthcare data. There is an increasing demand for noninvasive prediction approaches for determining the severity of VDD. This work proposes a novel approach to detect VDD levels by combining deep learning techniques with evolutionary computing (EC). Specifically, we employ a hybrid deep learning mode

Selective learning for sensing using shift-invariant spectrally stable undersampled networks.

The amount of data collected for sensing tasks in scientific computing is based on the Shannon-Nyquist sampling theorem proposed in the 1940s. Sensor data generation will surpass 73 trillion GB by 2025 as we increase the high-fidelity digitization of the physical world. Skyrocketing data infrastructure costs and time to maintain and compute on all this data are increasingly common. To address this, we introduce a selective learning approach, where the amount of data collected is problem dependent. We develop novel shift-invariant and spectrally stable neural networks to solve real-time sensing

U-Net-Based Deep Learning Hybrid Model: Research and Evaluation for Precise Prediction of Spinal Bone Density on Abdominal Radiographs.

Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disorder characterized by the progressive loss of bone mass, which significantly increases the risk of fractures. While dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is the standard technique for assessing bone mineral density, its use is limited in high-risk female populations. Additionally, quantitative computed tomography offers three-dimensional evaluations of bone mineral density but is costly and prone to motion artifacts. To overcome these limitations, this study proposes a hybrid model integrating U-Net and artificial neural networks, specifically focusing on abdomi

Development and quantitative performance evaluation of a noninvasive EMG computer interface.

This paper describes a noninvasive electromyography (EMG) signal-based computer interface and a performance evaluation method based on Fitts' law. The EMG signals induced by volitional wrist movements were acquired from four sites in the lower arm to extract users' intentions, and six classes of wrist movements were distinguished using an artificial neural network. Using the developed interface, a user can move the cursor, click buttons, and type text on a computer. The test setup was built to evaluate the developed interface, and the mouse was tested by five volunteers with intact limbs. The
