BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is an underdiagnosed infectious disease with non-specific clinical presentation that requires laboratory confirmation for diagnosis. The serologic reference standard remains the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) on paired serum samples. However, reported estimates of MAT's sensitivity vary. Brucella canis is a cause of canine infertility and abortion. Practical detection of cholera toxin (CT) by a liposome PCR (LPCR) immunoassay was compared to that of an established V. cholerae enterotoxin and Escherichia coli heat-labile enterotoxin reversed passive latex agglutination (VET-RPLA) assay. LPCR detected CT in the range of 10 pg/ml to 100 ng/ml in simulated feces and environmental water. Detection by VET-RPLA required at least 4 to 19 ng/ml CT.

A comparison is made of tests for thyroglobulin antibody, using gel diffusion, electroprecipitin, bentonite flocculation, tanned red cell agglutination, and latex slide agglutination techniques on sera from cases of Hashimoto's disease and other thyroid disorders. Detection of Salmonella typhi infection by a co-agglutination assay for specific O, H and Vi antigens and by blood culture were compared for 110 patients with suspected typhoid fever. The efficacy of two indigenously developed rapid tests, latex agglutination and antibody capture assay (a colour immunochromatographic assay) to detect group A Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) was evaluated in comparison with the traditional culture method ('Gold Standard') in both asymptomatic children (1500) and symptomatic patients (233). This study compared the identification of Burkholderia pseudomallei with that of related organisms. Bench tests and latex agglutination were compared with molecular identification. Using bench tests and latex agglutination alone, 100% (30/30) of B. pseudomallei isolates were correctly identified. Amoxicillin-clavulanate susceptibility testing was also a good and simple discriminatory test.
